Hanging out with AFL South Africa

The following article was written by Libby Toovey for AFL South Africa detailing her recent trip to the nation to assist in the development of Australian Rules football umpiring. This represents another bold and positive initiative for the game in South Africa and will go a long way towards ensuring that the greatest platform needed for a football match – umpires – become more and more available to ensure the future growth of the game.

In December last year I spent two awesome weeks with thelovely guys at AFL South Africa. This was in fact the second time that I’d had the pleasure of working with Phindi, July and all the others, where in October 2012 I spent a week helping the umpires during their National Championships. As an umpire in Melbourne, I’ve been exposed to a lot of umpiring coaching, training and AFL football, so I believe I have a lot to offer all the umpires and players in South Africa. That’s why I decided to come back and further impart my knowledge onto these AFL lovers that are hungry to know more and gain more experience of the game.

Libby Coaching Umpires

My aims while I was in South Africa were to develop a more substantial manual for umpires and coaches to access anytime they want, as well as a training handbook so the umpires could fine tune their skills and keep the practice going. Unfortunately umpiring in South Africa is not high on the list of priorities, and it’s been like that in Melbourne. The players are the ones who usually receive much more training than umpires and have a few more opportunities to better themselves. Unluckily, umpires seem to get left behind and are often an after-thought. But this is changing, in Melbourne and in South Africa. I guess letting me help out is proof of this.

"AFL South Africa are committed to giving umpires the proper resources and coaching that is needed to be great umpires. We are greatful to Libby Toovey for coming all this way to come share her skills and knowledge with our umpires here. Also to Neville Nash, Umpires Development in Australia for all umpiring materials he sent us from uniforms to manuals. With such great support umpiring in our country will surely get there one day." said Phindi Khambule, AFLSA National Events & Marketing.

On one of my final days working with AFL SA, I was lucky enough to travel to the big smoke of Johannesburg to run a day-long session all about umpiring to the umpires and players of the North West and Gauteng provinces. It was incredible to see familiar faces that I’d met at the Nationals in 2012, and to witness their passion and enthusiasm for an Australian sport continuing to grow. All of the umpires and players there were so eager to learn and better their knowledge of the game that it was hard to end the workshop.

Throughout the day, we went through the manual and training booklets that I had created. This was everything from the rules of AFL to the roles of each of the umpires, knowing how to get the best out of yourself as an umpire and much more. Everyone had lots of questions to ask, particularly the players about decisions that had gone against them during past games. I was happy to assist and help them understand how an umpire may have reached his/her decision. After a bit of explaining and reassurance, the players soon realised just how important the umpires are to the game. Without them the game wouldn’t and couldn’t be played. Sometimes this is forgotten by the players, however I made sure they understood that respect for umpires, and for others players is crucial to the success of an AFL game.

Gauteng Umpires

The main dilemma with umpiring in South Africa is there aren’t many places where you can learn and see professional umpires doing their thing. Not everyone has access to cable TV to be able to watch the one game that’s shown per weekend. Nor does everyone have internet to see highlights of past games. Nevertheless, it’s truly amazing how much these umpires and players have picked up along the way without much proper training. After the theory segment of our workshop, we headed outside for some real training where everyone had a chance to show off their new found umpiring skills. Whistles were blown loudly, voices were clear and signals were strong, even the boundary throws-in were great. Umpires were being developed right in front of my eyes and it was wonderful.

Unfortunately after five enthralling hours, the workshop had to come to a close. However, I know that everyone learnt something new, be it where a boundary umpire stands at the start of the match, how to signal a deliberate out of bounds, or how working as a team as umpires is so important. Everyone took something out of the day, and hopefully they can take it onto the footy field as well, whether as an umpire and a player.

A big thank you to the team at AFL South Africa for putting their trust in me and allowing me the opportunity to give back to the game I love so much, and to teach people that are so eager to learn. I can’t wait for August 2014 when the Lions come to Melbourne for the International Cup. Hopefully they’ll have a few talented umpires in tow.

Colm Begley and John Heslin talk to Irish radio Newstalk about the homesickness and the early return home of Irish international rookies recruited to the AFL.

This discussion is quite timely, just last week Irishman Daniel Flynn who was recruited by the Port Adelaide Football Club had flown back home to be with his family as his grandfather battles a serious illness.

Daniel, who joined the club as a rookie in November 2013, has taken a leave of absence and there is speculation that he may not return to the club at all.

General Manager of Football, Peter Rohde, says Daniel will return home for an extended period.  “We wish Daniel and his family all the best in this difficult time,” Peter Rohde said.

“While Daniel has fitted in well and has made good progress with his football he has also struggled with home sickness.  The club will continue to work with Daniel to help him make the transition to playing football so far from home.”

20-year-old Flynn has played one game, in the NAB Challenge against the Crows on February 16.

Ciarán Kilkenny who returned home last year before his preseason training with Hawthorn had even finished, is another who felt the draw of home strongly.  Unfortunately for Kilkenny his GAA football season is already over after he ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. ...

The third official AFL USA combine will be held from 25-27th April this year. As with previous years there is expected to be college athletes (and recently graduated) from baskeball, gridiron and soccer put through their paces in LA.

The American athletes are available for clubs to sign up on an international scholarship or rookie deal immediately at the Combine or wait until the athlete goes through the Australian combine if they like what they see in April.  International recruiting is first in best dressed without having to face being gazumped in the Draft.

Former Seattle University basketballer Eric Wallace was the ultimate success story of the first year's combine being awarded an International rookie spot with North Melbourne in 2012. Wallace features in this year's slightly updated recruitment video on Youtube that can be seen below.  Last year the success stories were Patrick Mitchell and Jason Holmes  (who feature briefly in this year's video below) who were given International Rookie spots by Sydney and St Kilda respectively.

The USA Revolution, the men's national Australian rules football team, will be holding their own training camp from April 4th-6th in Houston where the final team is expected to be selected for the 2014 International Cup. ...

Dees sign up China Southern as commercial partner

Melbourne Football Club is excited to announce China Southern Airlines as a new Platinum Plus Partner in 2014.

The world’s fourth largest airline will become the Club’s second highest commercial partner.

China Southern will become Melbourne Football Club’s presenting membership partner and gain extensive exposure through the Club’s media backdrop, scroll and parapet signage at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), digital advertising through the website and extensive match day activations.

At a signing ceremony at the MCG on Thursday, Melbourne Football Club CEO Peter Jackson said: “This is a great statement of the Club’s ongoing efforts to build respect in the business community, to attract a global company that has already invested heavily into Australia.”

"China Southern has seen the changes taking place at the Melbourne Football Club and see an iconic brand and name [in Melbourne] that can assist them build awareness and reach new customers through our national game – a game invented and codified by our Club.

“This is also significant for the AFL industry, as China Southern marks the first Chinese company to undertake a commercial partnership with an AFL Club – a historic first for the AFL’s first club.”

Discussions with China Southern first started in 2010 after Melbourne Football Club played Brisbane in the Shanghai Showdown as part of the World Expo.

This exhibition match and the Club’s subsequent China strategy reflects as Peter Jackson said “the benefits of relationships and patience in building trust to achieve positive outcomes”.

China is Australia’s largest trading partner, the largest source of tourist and international students, and China Southern plays a significant role in driving and delivering this ever increasing two way trade.

China Southern currently flies a double daily service in the peak summer period between Melbourne and Guangzhou and connects to over 90 Chinese and 40 international destinations including the recently launched Canton Route to London and Europe. Last year, China Southern carried 91.8 million passengers a six per cent increase from 2012 making it the largest airline in Asia. China Southern trains its pilots in Western Australia and has employed Australian flight attendants on some flights departing Sydney.

Chinese Consul General Song Yuming attending the signing ceremony at the MCG hoped that this partnership would bring mutual success “on the wings of victory ...

First prowl for Slavonski Brod Tigers.

Not content to sit out another season waiting to be a part of the big time footy in Croatia, new club the Slavonski Brod Tigers flexed their muscle last weekend against none other than the reigning Croatian premiers, the Zagreb Hawks.

Tomislav Vlaovic, co-founder of Croatia’s newest club, was full of pride when relating his match review to World Footy News. “The practice match was played in Slavonski Brod on the 9th of March between the newly founded Slavonski Brod Tigers and reigning premiers Zagreb Hawks.”

“A couple of goals early on from Tigers full forward Goran Klopan gave the Tigers a healthy lead into quarter time. In the second quarter the Tigers kept their lead of 17 points with goals coming from rovers Zvonimir Marinović and lightning fast Luka Đukić while powerful Hawks ruck Josip Habljak and forward Dinko Irsag scoring for the Hawks.”

“The third quarter was a slow one with only a couple of goals scored by Luka again and Hawks rover Frane Boban, with the Tigers still keeping their lead of 17 points. Early on in the last quarter the Hawks woke up and showed why they are so strong. Three goals from the Hawks dominant centre half forward Tomislav Cvetko [honestly, AFL clubs could do worse than look at this bloke as a mature age international project] and the Hawks took the lead for the first time in the match and never looked back.”

“[This game was a] huge success for the Tigers, nearly knocking off the reigning premiers! Congratulations to all competitors for showing courage, fighting spirit and dedication!”

Certainly the rest of the Croatian competition has been put on notice that the Tigers intend to be competitive from day one, and have already proved beyond reasonable doubt that they are a welcome and positive addition to the competition.

Final score: Zagreb Hawks 57 defeated Slavonski Brod Tigers 48

St Mary’s claim back to back NTFL flags.

The St Mary’s dynasty added more silverware to an overcrowded cabinet tonight when they won the NTFL (Northern Territory Football League) 2013/14 premiership against Wanderers at TIO Stadium in Darwin. The weather threw up a temperature in the mid-thirties and almost 100% humidity, creating tough conditions for a grand-final.

Going into the match as raging hot favourites after an undefeated season, many felt that another Saint’s premiership might have been a foregone conclusion, and on face value that is probably true. But that does not adequately recognise how well Wanderers played. Over four tight quarters, the Eagles simply never gave up. Every time St Mary’s looked like breaking away, Wanderers found something to bring themselves into the game.

The win sees St Mary’s re-write the history books winning their 30th premiership in their 61 years in the competition, and rapidly closing on the Port Adelaide Magpies record of the most successful club in major state competitions with 36 premierships.

Justin Van Unen kicked four goals for the Saints, whilst former North Melbourne player Eddie Sansbury kicked three for Wanderers.  Saints player, Kane Leerson, won the Chaney Medal for best afield in the grand final, whilst Saint’s and NTFL legend, Jarred Ilett, announced his retirement after the match.

Despite the Wanderers team’s determination to spoil the Saint’s party, the premiership win was a fitting result for St Mary’s after going undefeated throughout the entire season, including home and away games and finals.

GB Bulldogs squad taste elite-level training at Surrey Sports Park

The Great Britain Bulldogs last weekend held their training camp at the elite training facilities of Surrey Sports Park, in preparation for the upcoming announcement of their 2014 International Cup squad.

With four of the Bulldogs also selected for the European Legion to play against the AFL-AIS Academy in the Easter challenge series, the camp was a chance to see some of the athletic prowess the Bulldogs will bring to the tournament Down Under.

This report courtesy of GB Bulldogs Performance and Team Coordinator Claire Shapland.

You may have seen Tim Lovejoy and Matt Dawson trying out Australian Rules Football on BT Sport last week, but this weekend saw the GB Bulldogs AFL team visit the Surrey Sports Park for a combine testing and fitness weekend. Run by the team at the High Performance Institute, players aspiring to be in the International Cup 2014 squad were put through their paces in numerous fitness tests as used in the AFL draft including functional movement assessments, 20m sprints, the slalom agility run and the Yoyo intermittent recovery test.

For some it was a re-test weekend having been given individual programmes based on their last test results on their last visit to SSP in December. Big improvements were seen by all, but the stand out performer of the weekend was 19 year old Birmingham University student Sam Willatt who, with a 20m sprint time of 2.80 seconds, would have ranked 2nd in the actual AFL draft 2013. Sam is one of four Bulldogs selected in the European Legion squad to play the AFL AIS Academy team in Harrow on 12th April who will benefit from a week of coaching from ex-AFL professionals.

Sean Walton, GB & European Legion captain said: “Surrey Sports Park was the perfect location for the GB Bulldogs training camp. Elite level facilities and professional staff meant everything ran smoothly and the lads could get the most out of the weekend. Our time in Surrey has been invaluable in the Bulldogs preparation for the International Cup in Melbourne this Summer’.

As a non-funded UK sport, the Bulldogs are currently seeking a sponsor for their International Cup campaign - for more information please contact president@aflgb.com, or visit aflengland.co.uk. Follow the Bulldogs progress on twitter @GBBulldogsAFL and show your support by using #BackTheBulldogs.

Dragons and Kangaroos seek Middle East history

This Friday, March 28th, the OSN AFLME 2013/14 Grand Final will be played at The Sevens Pitch in Dubai featuring the Dubai Dragons and the Doha Kangaroos in a replay of last year’s premiership match. A Middle Eastern rivalry is now brewing between these clubs, and both are keen to rewrite their own history books on the day.

As the weather heats up again across the region, a top temperature of high twenties is expected, and will certainly test the fitness of both teams. The 1pm starting time will place the game at the hotter part of the day, and whichever team handles the conditions better may well win out on the day.

As previously reported in our last article about the AFL Middle East competition , the Dubai Dragons currently hold the advantage over the Qatar based Doha Kangaroos, having won last year’s flag as well as despatching the Roos in their only meeting this year to the tune of 34 points.

For the Dragons there is the delectable possibility of making it three flags in a row, supplanting the former foundation club Dubai Heat as the league’s most successful club.

The lads from Doha, however, have one thing on their minds. Their maiden premiership and revenge for last year’s loss. Alright, two things!

The Kangaroos will be looking to their ruckman Joe Barnes, Ben Simpson, a tall athletic midfielder and Dylan Alexander, a small goal kicking forward to blaze the path for the rest of the team to follow.

Amongst the Dragon key players, Ryan Perkins, their big strong full forward, Mark Browne (their 195cm utility who has won past two best on ground Grand Final medals) and Huwy Jones, their midfield captain and general who runs all day will be relied upon heavily to get the Dragons over the line.

After the completion of the home and away season the Dragons finished on top with five wins whilst the Kangaroos finished a clear second with four. The Abu Dhabi Falcons finished a creditable third with three wins, which was an improvement on last season.

Friday afternoon will see the two best performed teams in the Middle East for the past two seasons fight it out in a battle for the ages. May the best team prevail. Regardless of the result, history will be made in the annals of the AFL Middle East.

World Footy News will publish the results of the grand final as soon as they become available. ...

Coyotes may hold key to finals makeup.

$

This weekend’s clash between the Cergy-Pontoise Coyotes and the Bordeaux Bombers may go a long way towards shaping the 2013/14 finals of the CNFA competition in France. With just seven matches remaining before the finals, the Coyotes feature in three of them and may well hold the key to which teams makes the finals.

The Coyotes have done little wrong this season, yet through the anomalies of the draw they sit currently in fifth place. So far this season they have trounced the Strasbourg Kangaroos, won a memorable one point game against their cross town Parisian neighbours the Paris Cockerels and went down by just four points to the Montpellier Fire Sharks who are also in finals contention.

With a run home against the bottom placed ALFA Lions and top placed Toulouse Hawks, this weekend’s match might well be the game upon which their finals hopes rest. A win against the Bombers, and one more, might see them leapfrog the Fire Sharks (currently fourth) and the Bombers (sitting third).

The Toulouse Hawks sit undefeated on top of the ladder with four wins, and their clash with the Coyotes in the final home and away match of the year seems the only possible upset. They deserve premiership favouritism, however the Paris Cockerels are breathing down their necks just a game behind. The sobering thought for the Cockerels is that their last meeting with the Hawks resulting in a 95 point hiding. Paris would need to find a quite dramatic turnaround of that result to win this year’s flag. Their only remaining game for the home and away season is against fellow finals aspirants, the Fire Sharks.

To keep the Coyotes at bay, both the Fire Sharks and the Bombers need to win at least one of their remaining two matches. Both play the Strasbourg Kangaroos, so should achieve that goal as the kangaroos have struggled this year. The Bombers other game is the clash this weekend with the Coyotes. Maybe their destiny will be decided this weekend. The Fire Sharks have a tougher game coming up against the Paris Cockerels.

The ALFA Lions from Lyon have been on the end of some significant losing margins this season, and their final matches this season will be against the rampant Hawks and the finals-minded Coyotes. Results may not improve on paper, but the experience gained in their first full season will prepare them well for coming years.

There may only be seven games remaining in the CNFA season, but each one will have some bearing on the make-up of the 2013/14 season finals series. It makes for an interesting couple of months of footy in Franc ...

Santiago Saints looking towards a bright future.

Aussie Rules footy is about to grow extra legs in one of the world’s farthest flung locations for the game. Chilean club, the Santiago Saints, have steadily developed in the five years of operation since 2008, and hope to see further expansion in 2014.

As mentioned in a previous article contributed by Saints stalwart, Daniel Boyle, the team has grown “with a mix of Chilean and expat players. We have had a number of players visiting or living in Chile involved with the mining industry and this has seen players with experience in the lower leagues in Australia pass on their knowledge to other players.”

Recent years have seen a number of positive signs of growth, and “ the year 2012 saw a great charity match, with huge support from the Australian Embassy as well as other sponsors. We have had the Australian Ambassador Tim Kane at our major events and look forward to the embassy's continued support. In 2013 the club is looking to lock in sponsors for a long term period, ensuring stability for the future."

"The biggest development in 2013 has been the addition of an Auskick style program, held every Sunday ahead of the regular training session. The sessions have been well attended by a mix of Chilean and Australian children.”

Daniel, the club’s Media Manager, was upbeat about the activities for the 2014 season. “We've got our training back in action and we've had 20 players on board the last two weeks (it's probably 50-50 between Chileans and Australians).”

“The biggest plans for this year are to hold another fundraising match (last year we raised over $10,000 and had prizes from Qantas and Ski Portillo). [We also plan to] hold another grand final event (last year's was a great success and people travelled from other parts of Chile and South American to be there).”

“We probably won't look at going to the international cup. We were hoping to have a ‘nines’ team, but the AFL have told us now that they are unlikely to hold the nines tournament. But we would like to travel both inside Chile (there is a large Australian community in Antofagasta) and elsewhere in South America. Currently we are talking with both a rugby and gaelic sports club in Argentina. We don't know of too many active other clubs in South America at the moment. There are some guys in Brazil, but haven't heard too much of them in a while.”

“The juniors program will begin in May. There is currently a cricket junior program which is going very well at the same ground. We are hoping to double the numbers for the juniors, and particularly attract more Chilean kids. Many of the juniors are currently expat kids.” At least one Australian club has shown an interest in linking somehow with these kids to help bring them closer to the game in Australia.

It certainly shapes as an interesting year for the game in the capital city of Chile. World Footy News will bring you updates from the game in South America as they develop throughout the year. In the meantime we wish the Santiago Saints all the best as they continue to sell the game in one of the world’s more isolated Aussie Rules markets.

Doha Kangaroos win first ever flag for Qatar

In a situation that might feel eerily similar to 1992 when the West Coast Eagles first removed the premiership cup from Victoria, the Doha Kangaroos have defied all odds and pinched the AFL Middle East flag. Not only does it represent the first premiership for the Doha Kangaroos, which in itself is a wonderful achievement, but it is the first time the premiership cup has left the United Arab Emirates.

The final scores saw the Doha Kangaroos 13. 5 (89) defeat the Dubai Dragons 8. 9 (57).

Going into the game, history was largely working in the Dragon’s favour. Recent wins against the Kangaroos, including last year’s grand-final, the emotion of a possible three peat for the Dragons and the Kangaroo’s own demons after losing last year meant that Doha would need to surmount enormous odds. And they did.

Since the inception of the current competition in the Middle East, the flags have been shared by the original Dubai Heat, the Abu Dhabi Falcons and the Dubai Dragons – all based in the UAE.  Doha’s first ever flag represents the first time that a Middle East nation outside of the UAE has tasted the ultimate success. The win for Qatar might yet be an enormous promotional coup for the game in the region as other nations can believe that future flags are possible.

World Footy News will endeavor to bring a full match report to the site in the near future. Until then, our congratulations go to the Doha Kangaroos for winning the 2013/14 AFL Middle East premiership. May it be the first of many for the club and nation.

The following press release from the AFLNT details the Under 15 squad selections for the upcoming carnival in Coffs Harbour, New South Wales. As with previous seasons, many of these boys are just this step away from possible selection in the national indigenous team the Flying Boomerangs. The event will also feature teams from all other states and territories as well as the South Pacific Cup, this year featuring teams from New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and the combined Oceania team selected from last year’s Oceania Cup in Fiji.

Thirty-six Territory boys will line up for the Northern Territory at the National Indigenous Kickstart Championships and the All Nations Carnival to be held simultaneously in Coffs Harbour, from April 11-16.

The National Indigenous Kickstart Championships is an U15 selection Carnival for the highly regarded national ‘Flying Boomerang’s’ program, which will compete in the U16 NAB AFL National Championships coupled with an overseas tour which in recent years have been to places like South Africa and New Zealand.

“The Kickstart Championships has been an integral part of the pathway for our young indigenous boys to be exposed to a higher level of competition and demands of AFL football. The Flying Boomerangs program takes it a step further to develop and shape the whole individual which is fantastic for our boys particularly ones from remote communities,” said AFLNT Talent and Education Manager Tavis Perry.

The NT Kickstart team will be headed up by NT Thunder Premiership Player and current Southern Districts Premier League Coach, Shannon Rusca and will be assisted by AFLNT Staff Members Josh Johnny (Alice Springs) and Sam Ellis.

“Shannon brings a wealth of experience in football at all levels, and we hope that he can assist to develop these young men into future leaders and onto bigger and better things in football.”

The players will fly out from Darwin on April 9 after a training session at TIO Stadium.

The final squad is:

•             Sheldon James (Lajamanu)

•             Jamie Gurruwiwi (Gapuwiyak)

•             Jamahl Bostock (Tennant Creek)

•             William Bruce (Alice Springs)

•             Brenton Watts (Alice Springs)

•             Byron Cole (Alice Springs)

•             Fabian Dickson (Yuendumu)

For the first time this year, the ‘AFL All-Nations’ Carnival will run in conjunction with the Kickstart carnival and will be 9-a-side U15 competition and players from this team will have the opportunity of being selected in the U16 ‘World XVIII Team’ that participates in U16 NAB AFL National Championships.

“The AFLNT Multicultural Program has continued to grow from strength to strength in line with the AFL’s all inclusive football model and this will be the first time a NT representative team will be entered into the All Nations Carnival,” said Perry.

The NT All Nations Team will be coached by St Marys player, Josh Heath and assisted by AFL NT staff member, Ben Canton.

The final All-Nations squad is:
