Of Mountain Goats and Mammoths

In our previous story An Avalanche of Austrian Talent about the rebuilding of Australian Rules football in Austria, Oliver Krajacic painted a picture of a re-birth of sorts, due mainly to hard work and a connection to the Karl-Franzens Universität Graz.

That was on the back of a hectic off-season which saw structural and planning changes for Austrian footy, but was also rather theory-based. The measure of success would be tangible progress and change for the better as the 2013 season wore on.

At this point, Oliver can fill in the blanks.

“Our president Martin Schittegg had come up with the idea of holding an Austrian championship of sorts after we picked up some new players throughout the course of the year. By adding some retired veterans, some interested newcomers and our new additions to the team, we managed to put together theMurtal Mountain Goats, Gradec Earthmovers and Castle Rock Mammoths.”

“So, last Tuesday (July 16th) saw the first 9-a-side match between Austrian teams since 2010. Back then the Vienna Kangaroos were more of an international/Australian team playing in Austria. They were, however, kind enough to donate the old national team guernseys. To make things even better we didn't have just two, but actually three teams competing that day!”

“The task of dividing up players among the teams and organising game days was given to three players that have only been with the Styrian DownUnderDogs for a little over a year. Andi, Lukas and Michi did a great job motivating players to attend, be competitive on the field and, most importantly, have a ton of fun playing footy!”

“[Additionally] the recent Umpiring Workshop held by AFL Europe's Shane Hill at our field in Zwaring also made sure we had quality umpires and consistent calls.”

“Here are the results of the day. It is interesting, and valuable, that each side experienced a victory on the day.”

Castle Rock Mammoths 6 3 (39) d Gradec Earthmovers 3 7 (25)
Gradec Earthmovers 3 5 (23) d Murtal Mountain Goats 3 4 (22)
Murtal Mountain Goats 7 7 (49) d Castle Rock Mammoths: 2 6 (18)

Ladder:

TeamPtsF/A%
1. Mountain Goats4 71:41 173%
2. Earthmovers4 48:61 78%
3. Mammoths 4 57:74 77%

“There are at least two more game days planned in August, leading up to a possible training match for our national team (Austrian Avalanche) against the best of the rest. Things are definitely looking up for Austrian footy at the moment.”

It remains to be seen whether or not this new momentum can carry into the future or not. But one thing is clear. In recent years, the demise of the Vienna Kangaroos and an overall drop in numbers had seen the game on the slide in Austria. Now, the nucleus of a potential 3 team (or more) competition exists.

Not only is there the ability to play for the Styrian DownUnderDogs against the Croatian teams in the formal competition, there is also the ability to play in and around that as a mountain goat, mammoth or an earthmover. Then, of course, there is the distinct possibility of fighting for spots in a much stronger Austrian Avalanche national team.

This, of course, prompts the distinct possibility of saying something unexpected.

“Go Goats..!!”

VWFL to be Managed by AFL Victoria

The Victorian Women’s Football League Executive and its clubs have voted to transfer the governance and maintenance of the league to AFL Victoria. The transfer will be competed by the 1st of November, 2013.

The vote is the culmination of more than a year of work between the VWFL, AFL Victoria and the Transitional Working Group. The TWG was formed in May 2012 to develop a future competition model for women’s clubs.

AFL Victoria’s General Manager, Grant Williams, said that the changes would be a positive step for women’s football in Victoria. He pointed to the current collaborative approach and the recent successes of the state team as an example of how the women’s game will further develop in Victoria. He also thanked the VWFL Executive for their input into making the vote happen.

As part of the transfer, the existing VWFL, which features a premiers and reserves metro league with two country leagues, will be restructured to form a true state level competition. Williams believes that this will help further develop the pathway for female football players in Victoria and enhance initiatives such as the AFL Victoria VWFL Academy.

VWFL President Naomi Hurst said that the new structure would be more efficient and effective for administering the women’s leagues in Victoria. She also said that the considerable expertise and resources of AFL Victoria would provide invaluable support and guidance in managing the development of the women’s game into the future.

Collaboration with state AFL organisations has been very successful for women’s football leagues in the Rugby League heartlands of New South Wales and Queensland, whilst the women’s leagues in the smaller states of ACT and Tasmania, both of which did well at the recent Women’s National Championships, would not exist without AFL suppor ...

Women’s Euro Cup Meeting

On the 17th of July, the leading women involved in football in Europe (outside of Ireland) got together via tele-conferencing to discuss this year’s Axios Euro Cup, which will be held in Bordeaux on the 21st of September.

For the last few years, Ireland has managed to a field a team, and another country (or a collaboration of countries, such as last year’s European Crusaders) has also put a team in to play them in a women’s exhibition match. However, with the women’s game finally beginning to grow outside of Ireland, it might finally be possible to have a genuine women’s competition alongside the men’s competition at this year’s Euro Cup.

As this year’s Euro Cup will be hosted in France, and with a number of female players in Bordeaux, Paris and Toulouse, AFL France’s Women’s Football Co-ordinator, Berengere Portal, has confirmed that the French aim to put out a home side.

Other than France, Scotland and Switzerland also have growing numbers but might not have enough to field their own team. They are joined by England, Italy, Germany and Iceland, all of which have at least a few female players, and Iceland, who have 12 junior girls and a few seniors.

As the remaining players would be too many for another European Crusaders team, it was suggested by Ben MacCormack, AFL Europe General Manager, that the players could be split similar to the European curtain raiser to the AFL exhibition game in London last year, with a European Islands and a European Continent team. The idea was well accepted by the female football representatives present at the meeting and the teams were decided as follows:

Two national teams: Ireland and France.

Islands team: England, Scotland, Iceland.

Continent team: Italy, Switzerland, Germany and others.

More information about the Axios Euro Cup and the potential women’s teams can be found on the AFL Europe website http://www.afleurope.org/ and the AFL Europe Facebook page will be posting updates closer to the event https://www.facebook.com/AFL.Europe.Ltd . And if anyone is interested in sponsoring one of the women’s teams, please get in touch with AFL Europe’s Gaelle Hazimeh on gaelle.hazimeh@afleurope.org  or the local AFL affiliate league representative for stand alone teams.

If you are a female Australian Football player in Europe, or returning to Europe by the 21st of September, and would like to play for one of the teams, please get in touch with Gaelle Hazimeh or your nearest female football representative:

Ferny Creek to Vanuatu - the perfect end of season trip

AFL Vanuatu has come a fair way since the very early days and through the Vanuatu Volcanoes they represent their nation with pride. However the social and economic challenges faced in such a country mean that stories such as this are all the more important.

Victorian footy club Ferny Creek – nestled in the Dandenongs between Ferntree Gully and Olinda – is set for a footy trip with a difference when they tour Vanuatu at seasons end this September.

AFL Vanuatu receives boost from local Victorian Football Club Ferny Creek, Vic – July 23, 2012 – In September this year, AFL Vanuatu are going to receive a massive boost to their developing program when local Victorian club, Olinda Ferny Creek, embark on an AFL development tour to the Island.

Almost 50 people from the Olinda Ferny Club will take part in a tour that sees the club compete against the national side, but more importantly undertake community project work for the sport by helping to develop facilities, and provide coaching clinics in the local schools. With youth unemployment and social issues soaring in Vanuatu, the link between sport and keeping the youth active and positive has never been more important.

President of AFL Vanuatu, Justin Johnson says, “There’s a lot of social issues in Vanuatu and a huge number of youth who are unemployed. Sports programs are just so critically important, when the kids wake up in the morning they have something to look forward to”.

Concordia College in Adelaide were the first to take part in a development tour to Vanuatu, and the concept has been picked up by Horizons Sporting Events, who have developed a strong relationship with AFL Vanuatu and will be offering regular development tours for Australian clubs and schools to Vanuatu.

Managing Director of Horizons Sporting Events, Michael Edwards says, “The real outcome were aiming for is to do is something that leaves a lasting legacy for the community. Typically we try to encourage our tours to include some element of social justice participation, as it gives Australian kids great insight while also benefiting local communities like Vanuatu”.

Horizons have also developed a similar program to South Africa and are looking to expand into more pacific development programs to destinations such as Papua New Guinea, Fiji and Samoa. The Olinda Ferny Football club will be looking to make Vanuatu a regular trip on their calendar and help drive growth of AFL in Vanuatu, while providing a great opportunity for Australian kids too.

WFN reported PNG U/14s success signals NEAFL future for PNG/Sth Pacific. recently on the NEAFL potential of PNG either via more players involved if not PNG representation with AFL PNG General Manager Murray Bird suggesting the talent is such that one day the Mosquitoes could find a place stand alone in the NEAFL.

Bird spoke recently to the ABC on this topic and can be heard here PNG footballers to play big role in new NEAFL side.

Mr Bird says he is very confident of the ability of PNG players after their success in the under-14 side in Queensland.

"The boys played in the Queensland state academy championships on the Gold Coast and they won the grand final by nine or ten goals...they did exceptionally well," Mr Bird said.

"In the past, we've had probably eight to ten boys that have played at state league level...there's plenty of talent here. ...

Shem Charging through the TAC Cup

New Zealand’s Shem Tatupu, who will become an international rookie at Hawthorn in 2014 (current scholarship listed), has recently been in Melbourne playing for the Oakleigh Chargers in the elite TAC Cup under 18s competition.

He kicked 1.1 in the Chargers' win over the Northern Knights during July, with his marking a feature. Earlier in the year he kicked two goals each in games against Western Jets and Geelong Falcons. His marking again in both games was a highlight.

At this stage, he appears to be giving away a number of frees but as his game awareness and body positioning improves this is likely to alter. Or maybe, as he is Hawthorn listed, he might follow Buddy Franklin’s lead and still remain in the negative for frees for and against but become a very dominant footballer! Time will tell.

Canada's Northwind - 49th Parallel Cup Preview

$

This weekend international Australian football in north America will be highlighted as Canada and the United States compete in the 49th Parallel Cup on Canadian soil in Edmonton.

The Canadian national team, the Northwind, has been working hard since January for this game. The coaching staff feel they have one of their best teams, one which has been built around a group of players working hard to become solid unit. There is a belief amongst the squad that they can beat any team they face

Over the past year the Canadian team has been focusing on improving their skill sets and football knowledge, key areas in which Canadian national coach, Benjamin Roberts, believes will make this one of Canada’s most competitive teams.

“The boys have really come together, last year it was a new chapter with new structures.” Stated Roberts. “This year the structures have become more familiar and it’s showing on the track and in club games. Cody Royle (Assistant Coach) has done a great job with the midfield & Aaron Falcioni (Forwards Coach) has been working with the forwards.”

“Both have been instrumental in the team’s improvement. We now have a west based assistant helping us out. Adam Kelly who coaches the Burnaby eagles was given the job, Adam has a good standing in BC and we look forward to working with him.”

There is a feeling that Canada will have a well balanced team with a strong backline, a potent forward line and a midfield that will compete hard all day. The coaching staff is confident that each player has adapted really well to the new structures and they are very excited for the team’s potential, not only for the Parallel cup but for next year’s International Cup.

“We have a few players that have been having a huge impact; Our new captain Adam Millen, lives for the contest and will give the boys a lift with his fierce attack and hardness.” Commented Roberts.

“Others to watch include Andrew Boyce from the Etobicoke Kangaroos who has improved out of sight, has excellent foot skills and never say die attitude.”

“Another guy we are excited to see again is Nate Strom from the Ottawa Swans. Nate has had a great year for Ottawa. He is very versatile and works hard.”

It’s a very special honor for every player to represent their country and it gets no bigger than against their arch rival, the US national team. It is also a chance for the Northwind to get a taste of international competition, which is a rarity, to help prepare them for the 2014 International Cup.

“For us it’s another chance to play together before next years IC. We have been working a lot on structures and execution.” Stated Roberts. “It’s also the last chance for guys to impress before the IC squad is announced in October. If our guys all give 100% every time they hit the track we are confident of getting a positive result.”

One things fans of world footy can expect is for this Canadian team to take the game on and be better drilled than in past years. There is a strong desire throughout the squad to give their all for their country and even more so in front of their home crowd in Edmonton.

7 MATCHES – TWO CONTINENTS – EIGHT NATIONS – MEN & WOMEN

This  coming Saturday, 3rd of August, International Footy will see Vikings, Warriors and Knights battle against Elks, Bulldogs and Black Eagles in day one of the 2nd European Championships In Australian Football in Dublin, Ireland, and thousands of kilometers away in Edmonton, Canada (home to 1978 Commonwealth Games) the Northwind and Northern Lights will take on the Revolution and Freedom in the 9th edition of the 49th Parallel Cup, where Canada and USA do battle in both Men’s and Women’s matches.

Will there be any changes in the ranks in the WFN World Rankings?

Yes, at least one! If the four relevant matches go as the Ranking scheme predicts (ie. higher ranked/rated nation wins more often than not), a Croatian Knights win over the German Black Eagles will see Germany slip to 14th place and Sweden rise to 12th.  See Canada v USA below for more possible changes.

European Championship Matches
Assuming
Great Britain 7th (46.51) defeats Denmark 11th (38.71) Rating Gap +/- 7.81 rate change +/-0.33
GB new Rating Points (46.84) 7th
Denmark new Rating Points (38.38) 11th

Ireland 2nd (54.78) d. Sweden 14th (37.41) Rating Gap +/- 17.37 Exceeds +/- 10.00 rate change 0.00

Croatia (provisional)(40.61) d. Germany 12th (37.87) Rating Gap +/- 2.74 rate change +/-1.09
Croatia new Rating Points (41.69) (provisional)
Germany new Rating Points (36.78) 14th

49th Parallel Cup Match
Assuming
USA 8th (45.87) d. Canada 13th (37.82) Rating Gap +/- 5.04 rate change +/- 0.74
USA new Rating Points (46.61) 8th
Canada new Rating Points (37.08) 13th

However, if USA win by more than 40 points and Great Britain doesn’t, the rating change for the USA v Canada match will be +/- 1.12 giving USA finishing points of (46.99) placing them into 7th place and GB falling to 8th place, and Canada will finish with (36.70) 14th  just below Germany with (36.78) 13th.

A Dynamic World Ranking Scheme

How dynamic the WFN World Ranking system is, would be demonstrated if Denmark were to defeat Great Britain. Denmark would jump to10th place with 41.38 Rating Points over Fiji down to 11th and Great Britain (43.84) would slip to 9th place below Tonga, with USA and Tonga climbing to 7th and 8th places respectively.

49th Parallel Cup Women’s Match
The fifth international match for the weekend has the Canadian Northern Lights take on USA’s Freedom and this match would see both Canada and USA become the first two nations to become Fully Ranked if the WFN World Ranking System was applied to International Women’s Footy. The winner would be Ranked 2nd behind Australia and the loser 3rd.

The two other matches being played this weekend are the USA v Canada Men’s & Women’s Development squads.

Footnote: Croatia will become the 21st Nation to be Fully Ranked on the conclusion of the 2nd European Championships in Australian Football next weekend 10th August.

Revolution on the road: 49th Parallel Cup preview

$
0
0
The US Revolution team head north for the 2013 instalment of a series going back to 1999 when Paul Roos coached the US team against Canada in Chicago.  This year Edmonton, Canada is hosting the international footy contest known as the 49th Parallel Cup.

The last time these two met in 2012 on US soil the Americans came away with an inaccurate 7.12 to 5.1 win over the Canadians.

The USAFL have a strong focus and solid structure around their national team and coach Matt Bishop  spoke to us about the build up to this year’s international “Our preparations have been as good as possible given players are spread out all over the U.S. We had a training camp in LA back in March to set the wheels in motion and since then players have been required to submit monthly fitness test results. Also we have used online technology to discuss the game plan with the players.”

And being only a year away from the next International Cup Bishop says the team taking the field this weekend is getting close to what they are likely to bring to Melbourne “We only had two players selected (back in March) withdraw from the squad that chosen after the training camp. We are certainly getting closer to finalizing a squad that will travel to Australia, however we do like to keep the door slightly ajar for any players that we believe could add to the team."

One criticism of US teams in the past has been the lack of youth (at least compared to teams such as NZ and PNG), a result of the game in the US being dominated by post college adults and very few junior programs across the country.  Of this year’s team, Bishops says “Our average age is a healthy 27 years of age.” The injection of youth in the 2013 team comes in the form of Dan Lehane from New York, who travelled to Australia to play in the World XVIII team of 2011. “He turned 20 just this week. Dan is of Irish descent and plays Gaelic Football at a high level in NY.”

Other debutants into the team are Cameron Freeman and Jason Wilhelm.  “Cam has been playing since 2007 and spent a season out in Australia. He has played mostly for the Florida Redbacks.  Jason is from the Chicago Swans he spent a year out in Gin Gin (WA) in 2012. Jason is relatively new to the game but at 6'7" and agile he adds a new dimension to the Revolution.” Kevin Waden from the Golden Gate Roos is another 6’7” American that Bishop would like to have at his disposal but is unavailable this weekend.  Along with Wilhelm he could really give the US first use of the ball if they are firing for IC14.

“Overall the team is fitter and stronger than the 2011 International Cup and this will continue to build over the next 12 months. In the past we have struggled to find suitable ruckman but are lucky to have a couple of guys available. The team's stability is starting to really strengthen, which a credit to the players as they work hard to maintain relationships over long distances.”

No doubt  the US team will not have it all their own way, and any “away” match in International footy is tough to win, but if their kicking is better than 2012 they have a very experienced unit that should bring the cup home with them.

The US team is as follows.

The AFL Europe Championships kick off in Dublin tomorrow, with Europe's six strongest footballing nations battling it out for the cup. Hosts Ireland will again go into the tournament as hot favourites, although with healthy competition from arch rivals Great Britain, Scandinavian powerhouses Denmark and Sweden, and the relative underdogs Croatia and Germany.

The round one pool matches of Ireland vs Sweden and Great Britain vs Denmark will go a long way towards deciding who will meet in the final, with a large advantage to the winners in those matches.

Fans will be able to check up on the full draw, squads and live results via the tournament website dublin2013.org, with scores also to appear here after each round, along with resultant changes in the WFN World Rankings.

Peter Ross from the Irish Warriors has also published a form guide on his blog, which is available here ...

Swans sign up American

Sydney newspaper the Daily Telegraph has reported that the Sydney Swans have signed Patrick Mitchell, one of the three athletes to come out of the AFL's US combine earlier this year.

The three athletes trialled at the Swans and in front of other AFL clubs in June. Swans' head of recruiting told the Telegraph "The other two were impressive as well, but we felt the thing with Patrick was he was going to give it absolutely 100 per cent."

Beatson's opinion on whether he would make an AFL footballer "Is there a guarantee Patrick is going to make it? No, there's not. But we're going to give him a go and provide him with the resources to give him a realistic chance of making it."

The other two athletes (Mark Cisco and Jason Holmes) may get another chance to impress clubs at this year's Draft camp in October, invitations will be announced in September.

Previously the Swans have passed on taking Shae McNamara and signed Alex Starling from the US to an international scholarship, but Starling never appeared to have made it to the point where he was seriously considered to be added to the Swan's list.

The Swans released the following statement this afternoon;

THE Sydney Swans are pleased to announce the signing of 24 year old American Patrick Mitchell as an International Rookie.

Mitchell, from Des Moine, Iowa, stands at 201cm and has a background in basketball, most recently playing with the University of North Dakota.

Swans coach John Longmire said the club was impressed with Mitchell’s athletic capabilities as well as his determination to learn the game.

“Obviously what we’ve seen with Mike Pyke coming to our footy club is that there is potential for players who haven’t got a background in AFL football to develop and have an opportunity to play league football if they have the right mindset, are prepared to work, and have some athletic talent,” Longmire said.

“We think that’s what Patrick has got – a combination of all of those attributes," he said.

Mitchell is expected to arrive in Sydney in October. His recruitment is part of the Basil Sellers International Program.

Byrne confirmed to come on board for Blues

After trialling with the Carlton Football Club last year, Ciaran Byrne was back at Princes Park again in the past couple of weeks and has been confirmed as the latest Irish import to the AFL. Byrne will be officially taken in the AFL's national draft later this year as an International Rookie.

Following the last two notable failures in John Heslin and Ciaran Kilkenny at Richmond and Hawthorn respectively to make it past preseason, clubs may have become understandably shy of bringing out young homesick Gaelic footballers.

But the success this year of Pearce Hanley and Zach Tuohy would have reignited the faith that getting the right players and being prepared to be patient for the transition to be fulfilled can reap rewards.

Of course Carlton are not new in the Irish cross over game and will be glad to have locked in Byrne after Kilkenny slipped their grasp last year.

Carlton have a strong recruiting setup in Ireland and it will be interesting to see if any other clubs have a renewed interest in Irish talent.

Chen Shao Liang may ring some memory bells with our readers. He was the Chinese athlete identified at the AFL's Combine in China last year and he subsequently took part in the main Combine in Melbourne.

This week he flew into Australia and on the weekend suited up for the Southern Dragons in the VAFA. The Dragons are a club that is mainly based around Melbourne's Asian immigrant community, in particular having a good number of Vietnamese players.

He will be in Australia for four weeks and play the last three rounds of the season with the Dragons. Shao Liang and his team mates went down to West Brunswick 17.11 to Southern Dragons 2.10 on a cold Melbourne winter's day. He will also be training at Wesley College’s with the team's 1st XVIII during his stay.
