Putney Magpies Steal The Show…And The Points – AFL London

0
0

Even the most devout Magpie fan would admit that Putney’s season hasn’t got off to the start they were hoping for – going down to the Hawks and Wildcats. But their fortunes turned around when they snared a three point win from the London Swans to record their first win for the season. The result puts them back with the rest of the field to challenge for higher honours later in the season.

Such morale boosting wins can sometimes be the catalyst for great positive change, and Magpie supporters would be feeling that positivism right now.

In other results, the Wandsworth Demons kept their perfect season start intact with a solid 39 point victory over last year’s premiers, the North London Lions. The win keeps them on top of the ladder as the only undefeated team after three rounds.

The West London Wildcats, stung after their first round loss to the Demons, powered to another big win. After mauling the Magpies last weekend, the Wildcats clobbered the Wimbledon Hawks by 98 points.

The Women’s League saw wins for the Demons over the Lions and the Hawks over the South east London Giants. The Giants and the Clapham demons took the spoils in the Conference Division whilst results in the Social Division saw wins to South London demons, Ealing Emus and the Putney Magpies.

Premiers Division Results:

Wandsworth Demons 12 10 82 d North London Lions 6 7 43
West London Wildcats 20 18 138 d Wimbledon Hawks 6 4 40
Putney Magpies 11 5 71 d London Swans 11 2 68

Majak Leading The Way…For Now

0
0

Majak Daw has a firm place in AFL history as the first Sudanese player to reach the highest level of the AFL. What might have been seen as a novelty at the beginning has now changed with Daw proving last weekend that he has much more to offer. He was retained as a rookie by North Melbourne last year and played his first senior game against Essendon on Saturday.

His return of 14 possessions, 5 tackles, 2 goals and 4 hitouts showed off his array of skills, despite a much publicised horror shot on goal, kissing on the run from only 15 metres out. But the outing proved that Majak can still play at the highest level.

But Daw’s VFL form also reads well in 2016. His output of an average 13 possessions, 5 tackles, 25 hitouts and a goal a game has been impressive and confirms his ability to impact a football match. At this stage he is probably still holding the mantle of the best current player from African nations in the AFL…for now.

But in recent year’s other Sudanese players, and from other African nations, have found their way onto AFL lists, and it is a good time to review their impact as we approach one third of the way through the 2016 season.

Aliir Aliiir made his well-earned debut for the Sydney Swans recently. He had only half a dozen or so possessions, but read the play well and looked at home. But hiss impact is best measured when looking at his VFL form. Aliir has amassed an average of 16 possessions per game so far this season in the NEAFL. His tackling has seen an average of almost 3 per game and his dash off half back has been invaluable to the Swans. His call up for senior selection was warranted and more matches will follow.

Mabior Chol excited Richmond, and AFL fans during the NAB Challenge in the pre-season. Since then he has continued to show that promise was no fluke. With an average possession rate of around 9 per game along with 3 tackles per game, Chol is holding his own and setting himself for greater things. He has also booted 6 goals for the Tigers. His occasional journeys into the ruck have also helped the Tigers’ depth at hitouts and clearances. Chol has the potential to make a far bigger impact on the game.

Reuben William has done well at the Brisbane Lions in thee NEAFL. With an average of 15 possessions as a midfielder/forward per game, as well as averaging just under 3 tackles per game, William is also making great strides in his hoped for long AFL career. He would have kicked more than 2 goals this season but for inaccuracy, but that will come. As the Lions struggle this season it is hardly impossible that William, on current form, find that rookie upgrade he needs and debut for the Lions at AFL level before this season is out. He has drive also. His younger brother recently excelled at the National Diversity Championships and already claims he is far better than his older brother. Nothing like sibling rivalry to drive a player further.

Gach Nyuon at Essendon has been hit by injuries, and now suspension, which has limited his impact for the Bombers. But in his games to date in the VFL he has averaged 8 possessions and 9 hitouts per game. He has also snared a couple of goals. Nyuon is probably a little behind the rest of the pack by comparison, but ruckmen usually are. Both Nyuon and the Bombers would be aware of this and there is no rush for this “project” player.

So at this stage Daw probably still holds sway up against fellow African heritage players, (though Western Bulldog Jason Johannisen is not included in this list – born in South Africa). But he is being challenged by some other talent just bursting to take his mantle. The rest of 2016 will be interesting to see each player’s continued developmen ...

Football Community Behind Jarryd Roughead

0
0

The Australian Rules footballing world has reacted with shock and also support for Hawthorn’s star forward, Jarryd Roughead. After having had a melanoma removed from his lip during the 2015 season, Roughead returned to the field. But this season he has been struck down by knee surgery, and this week during a routine check the melanoma has returned. Roughead’s playing future is now in doubt until the results of a biopsy determine the next course of action.

It is rare that a player has to go through such a public health scare during their playing career. But there is an enormous groundswell of support for the star Hawk.

World Footy News joins with those sending Jarryd and those close to him messages of best wishes, concern and support.

On the website www.afl.com the following details are part of a story on Roughead’s situation.

The four-time premiership player had a melanoma removed from his lip midway through last year and missed two games.

"On a regular basis, he has to go and have a full body scan. He's had one previous and everything was all clear," Fagan said.

"This time around, there are a few spots of cancer."

Fagan said an early detection was a positive, with Roughead's health the only concern for the Hawks.

"His long-term playing future is very much secondary to that, and is not even a consideration at this point in time," he said.

"This is a private medical matter and we would ask everyone to respect Jarryd and his family’s request for privacy during this time."

Roughead joined Hawthorn through the 2004 National Draft and has played 231 games for 491 goals. He has played in four premierships (2008, 2013, 2014, 2015), is twice All-Australian (2013, 2014) and won the AFL’s Coleman Medal for goalkicking in 2013 in a highly decorated AFL career.

Good luck and best wishes, Jarryd.

Scorpions Ground Wolverines – AFLCNE Update

0
0

For two weeks in a row the Wolverhampton Wolverines were chalking up cricket scores in their AFLCNE matches. Then, last weekend, they came up against a brick wall called the Nottingham Scorpions. In a tough match, the Scorpions kept the pressure on the previously undefeated Wolverines and pulled away to notch an important victory for the club.

The result keeps the Scorpions well within reach of the Wolverines (second on ladder) and the Manchester Mozzies (first) in the early race for league supremacy.

In other matches, the Huddersfield Rams played in a tight, tough contest against the Sheffield Thunder. The game was close to three-quarter time, but the Rams were able to pull away in the final stanza to record a solid win by 29 points.

The Tyne Tees Tigers dined out on newcomers, the Merseyside Saints, recording a formidable 108 point win. Whilst it was a big result for the Tigers, the Saints could also draw some solace from the fact that their baptism of fire, whilst still seeing big scores, is trending with narrower losses each week. The club certainly knew they would be in for some tough days from the outset, but each week they gain more experience and greater understanding of the game and each other.

Final Scores:

Huddersfield Rams 17 19 121 d Sheffield Thunder 12 20 92
Nottingham Scorpions 15 16 106 d Wolverhampton Wolverines 7 18 60
Tyne Tees Tigers 21 22 148 d Merseyside Saints 5 10 40
Manchester Mozzies – Bye

Ladder:

Manchester Mozzies 12
Wolverhampton Wolverines 10
Nottingham Scorpions 10
Huddersfield Rams 8
Tyne Tees Tigers 4
Sheffield Thunder 2

Upgraded Holmes named in Saints Round 9 team

0
0
St Kilda today upgraded International Rookie Jason Holmes to the senior list and he was tonight named in their 25-man squad to play Essendon on Sunday.  The American has been biding his time playing at Sandringham in the VFL this season after debuting in Round 21 in 2015 for the Saints and played in the last three matches of the season at AFL level.

This season he has played for the Saints in the pre-season NAB Challenge but has since gained further experience playing as a key forward as well as in the ruck in five matches for Sandringham.  Last week he had 8 disposals and 23 hit-outs for the Zebras against Casey Scorpions as his team went down by 31 points.  He has kicked two goals this season, one each against Box Hill and Richmond.  Against Footscray in Round 2 he probably played the best match of the year so far with 38 hit-outs and 6 tackles.

Fellow American Mason Cox was named at full forward for Collingwood after he seemed to have overcome having his hand stomped on during the match against Brisbane last weekend.  If Holmes does play on Sunday (and Mason Cox plays as selected at Collingwood) it will be the first time two players from the USA have played in the same AFL round.

It's still early days for Carlton's own American International rookie Matt Korcheck. Thrown straight in the deep end of VFL football, Korcheck is doing better than treading water at the Northern Blues. He may not be racking up the disposals, but his ruckwork is coming along very nicely and the big fella has no problem getting in for a tackle or contesting the ball that does not clear the contest. Against Casey Scorpions two weeks ago he racked up 42 hit-outs and followed up last week with 28 hit-outs against Williamstown. He is rotating between the bench, the ruck and the forward line. He has not managed to score a major for the Northern Blues as yet but surely he will soon convert successfully.

Speaking of the deep end, media speculation this week has thrust American Brandon Kaufman towards a Gold Coast Suns debut. Kaufman is an international scholarship player at the club and after starting at the Labrador Tigers Reserves in the AFLQ on ANZAC Day weekend is quickly moving up.. This week played in the NEAFL for the GC Sun's reserves team. Kaufman seems to be making the transition to the Aussie game well as he was named best (with 11 disposals and 2 marks) for the injury depleted Suns in their match where they were heavily defeated by the GWS Giants.  For Kaufman to play in the AFL this season the club would need to first sign him mid season as an International Rookie (which would be a first for any AFL Club) and then upgrade him to the senior list in place of a player who would go onto the long term injury list.  This did not happen and Kaufman will not make that suggested debut this week at least. ...

Coyotes Take French Minor Premiership

0
0

With the Toulouse Hawks forfeiting their final round match against the Cergy-Pontoise Coyotes, the Coyotes have finished the home and away rounds of the CNFA (French) Australian Football season. Sitting on 25 points after all but one match of Round 9 have been completed, the Coyotes cannot be knocked from the spot regardless of the result of the final match between the Paris Cockatoos and the Strasbourg Kangourous.

It is a huge result for the Coyotes, meaning they will contest their semi-final against the Toulouse hawks. Whether by win or forfeit, the highest the Cockatoos can finish is third due to a lesser percentage than the Cockerels, meaning they will contest the other semi-final against the Paris Cockerels in a Paris derby.

After consecutive semi-final appearances for the Coyotes where they were knocked out, this year’s strong season sees them in the best place yet to go further and challenge on the biggest day of all. Though, they still need to overcome last year’s premiers, the Toulouse Hawks, to get there.

In the only match played on the weekend, the Perpignan Tigers finished of their best year ever by winning their third match of the season against the ALFA Lions. The win was by a modest 26 points (66 to 40) but enough to see them finish the season on a creditable 16 points and in clear fifth place, just a game and a bit shy of a finals place. They weathered a tough challenge from the proud men from Lyon. The Lions didn’t win their last match but they certainly fought hard to the end, providing a positive note on which to build next season.

Few things in life are foregone conclusions, but it would take something completely unexpected for the Paris Cockatoos to lose their final match against Strasbourg. But even if that were to occur and the Kangourous came to Paris and pulled off a monumental upset, the Cockatoos will still see finals action – quite a special feat in their first season. That match is scheduled for next Saturday.

Then, throughout June, it’s finals time. We may see that past powerhouses, the Cockerels and Hawks, add to their already glittering trophy cabinets. Or it could be the year for a brand new premier – the Coyotes or the Cockatoos. No matter what, the next few weeks of French footy are going to be exciting after an excellent 2015/16 season to dat ...

Tom Wills grave restoration project seeking your help

Our friends at The Footy Almanac (in particular Marius Cuming, Phil Dimitriadis and John Harms) are seeking to crowdfund restoration of the grave of Tom Wills, one of the fathers of Australian Football.  Read on for more details as originally published at www.footyalmanac.com.au

Australia’s first sporting legend and the father of Australian football lies in a crumbling grave in a Melbourne cemetery.

With a largely unknown but extraordinary life story, Tom Wills deserves a final resting place in better condition.

With the blessing of the Wills family, The Footy Almanac is now raising funds to renovate the gravesite of our first cricketing hero who also gave Australians our own spectacular game.

The project will cost about $15,000 and with millions of AFL supporters and cricket lovers, the Australian public should be able to do the right thing by this man and restore his gravesite to its former glory.

In doing so we wish to draw attention to his remarkable life that started within a pioneering farming family before becoming a young cricketing hero in England, colonial star for Victoria then outback Queensland station manager. After personal tragedy he formed, mentored and coached the first aboriginal cricket team that later became the first Australian team to tour England.

Enigmatic, controversial and egalitarian are words used to describe a man whose immense sporting foresight lives on today.

His strong personal relationships with the aboriginal people of western Victoria were cemented in sport and provide inspiration for modern day reconciliation.

Hawks, Swans Play Out Exciting Draw – AFL London

0
0

In the most exciting game of the round, and possibly the season to date, the Wimbledon Hawks have drawn with the London Swans in their Round 4 match last weekend. In a match that was important to both – for Hawks to consolidate their place in the top four, and for the Swans to get their first win of the year – the draw didn’t exactly deliver either, yet both teams gained something, such is the way of drawn matches.

The result sees the Swans still on the bottom of the ladder and the Hawks still in fourth place, but both have the advantage of half a game in hand later in the season if things get closer. The draw also highlighted the luck of the Swans, going down by just 3 points to Putney last weekend. In both games one extra straight kick could have changed their fortunes.

The Wandsworth Demons remained undefeated so far this season with a 122 point thumping of the Putney Magpies, keeping their impressive start to the season intact.

The West London Wildcats sent a strong message to the rest of the league when they thrashed last year’s premiers the North London Lions by 87 points. Since their opening round loss to the demons, the Wildcats have been remorseless and seem intent on taking away the Demons’ hold on early flag favouritism sooner rather than later.

AFL officially announces IC17 dates

0

The AFL today announced the details of the 2017 AFL International Cup to be held in Melbourne. Joining the 2014 champions PNG at the sixth iteration of the International Cup will hopefully be at least 20 mens teams. The women's competiton is expected to grow from the five nations that competed in 2014.

PNG are the most successful nation at the International Cup winning the competition in 2008 and 2014 as well as finishing runner up in 2002, 2005 and 2011 in the men's division.  Ireland (2008) and Canada (2011) have each won the women's competition in the first two cup's that had female teams competing.

The full announcement from the AFL follows

The AFL is pleased to announce the 2017 AFL International Cup (IC17) will be held in Melbourne from Saturday August 5 to Saturday August 19, 2017.

The sixth International Cup will again include both men’s and women’s competitions.

AFL Head of Community & International Development Grant Williams said he expects the 2017 carnival to be the biggest yet.

“The popularity of Australian football overseas continues to grow with more players and fans taking up and supporting our game,” he said.

“Following the success of the AFL International Cup in 2014, we will again conduct a round of matches in IC17 at suburban and country grounds to give participants an authentic Australian football experience.

“We look forward to welcoming players from North America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific to compete.”

The AFL International Cup is played every three years. No expatriate Australians are eligible to play. Teams comprise solely of amateurs who must be nationals of the country they represent.

In 2014 there were 25 teams (18 men’s and seven women’s teams) that represented 18 different nations. Papua New Guinea won the men’s final while Canada won the women’s final.

Japan, China, India, Indonesia and Pakistan have previously sent teams the International Cup and the Asian component will may expand with an Indo-China team a possibility to compete with nationals from Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar.

That team would likely be known as the Indochina Bulldogs – perhaps because the Doggies’colours are on each of the Indochina national flags and Rut Ngarmariyakul (Thai rep), the organiser of the first Indochina All Stars, is a huge Doggies fan. The team in the past AFL Asia tournaments has been coached by Andrew Embley having strong connections to the region with both his Grandparents and Father being born in Burma (Myanmar) before migrating to Perth in 1964.

Teams competing in the International Cup pay their own way to attend which is a huge outlay for all nations who have to find a way to fund their participation through team and individual fund raising and sponsorship.  This is the main hurdle that the Indo-China team will need to overcome between now and the tournament kickoff.

Other nations that have not appeared in the past but may be a chance for 2017 are Germany, Croatia (among a number of European possibilities) and perhaps even a South American where there has recently been a boost to their programs courtesy of a DFAT grant.

Merseyside Saints Narrow The Gap – AFLCNE

0
0

Like any brand new club starting from scratch, the AFLCNE’s newest club, the Merseyside Saints, have had a tough initiation into the “big league”. They knew there would be tough days at the office, but they would also have had confidence that time, patience and belief would help alleviate any one-sided scorelines.

By going down to the Sheffield Thunder last start by 49 points, they continued a positive trend from negative results. Hammered mercilessly by the Wolverines early in the season by 289 points, then by the Mozzies by 265 points, the scoreline against the Tyne Tees Tigers receded to a 108 point loss, and now 49 points to Thunder.

Granted the scorelines are relative to the opposition played, but that doesn’t change the fact that the deficits are headed in the correct direction and is a positive sign of growth for the fledgling club. There will be more tough days, but each game has been a learning experience and the Merseyside Saints are learning at a rapid rate.

The Thunder desperately needed the win to stay in touch with the league frontrunners. It would take a simple change in good fortune for the Thunder to change player stability and turn their season around, currently sitting second last on the ladder, so all wins are vital to keep them in the game.

In other matches, the Manchester Mozzies defeated the Huddersfield Rams by 82 points whilst the Nottingham Scorpions kept their impressive start to the season going with a huge 164 point thrashing of the Tyne Tees Tigers.

But the story of the week might just be the glimmer of future success evident in another competitive performance by the Saints as they continue to write a new chapter in the AFLCNE history books. With their current progression (the season is but a couple of months old) it may not be as long as some people think before we hear their club theme song belted out somewhere with their inaugural win.

Scores:

Nottingham Scorpions 26 26 182 d Tyne Tees Tigers 2 6 18
Sheffield Thunder 12 15 87 d Merseyside Saints 4 14 38
Manchester Mozzies 24 21 165 d Huddersfield Rams 11 17 83

Russian Cats down Koalas

0
0

Footy in Russia is no longer a one horse race. The domination of the Lazy Koalas (albeit a brief domination) has ended and Moscow is now being challenged as the Russian powerhouse of Australian Rules footy with the St Petersburg Cats winning their latest match.

The Cats were the home team this time around, having gone down to the Lazy Koalas in Moscow a few weeks ago. The lazy Koalas have been up and about as a club for a couple of seasons, but it is only this year where the St Petersburg cats have entered into a regular competition.

It is roughly 650 kilometres between the two Russian cities (very roughly the same distance from London to Edinburgh, a little more than Los Angeles to San Francisco and a little less than Melbourne to Adelaide). Due to the distance, regular tournaments are problematic, but becoming more frequent – and desired.

It marks the inaugural victory for the St Petersburg Cats, and their coach/founder, Slava Belov, was a proud man describing the day. He stated that “we played few in numbers but it gave us the opportunity to use open space and gave us the time for good decisions. Cats did play really well, [with a] fast running and passing game. Yaroslav Zabaydullaev is an MVP with great defending plays (covering spoiling, pressure, and touches on the goal line converting potential goals into behinds). The top goal kicker was Sergey Darovskih. For both of them it was only the second official match.”

The club’s wall page on their website issued this (edited) match description:

“The fans gathered in the stands of the small sports arena witnessed an intense match with a stubborn struggle on each section of the field. Starting segment [of the]match turned out to be quite equal, but then the hosts seized the initiative and managed to break away from the opponent by more than 20 points. [The Koalas] nevertheless, found the strength to fight back in the final quarter and reduced the gap to three points. But the ending of the meeting still existed for the Cats. After a few successful attacks, they confidently brought the match to a win with a score 92 to 75 At the end of the match top scorer was Sergei Darovskikh, and the title of most valuable player was Jaroslav Zabaydullaev [who] repeatedly rescued the team from [opposition hands] as the last defender. We thank the team Lazy Koalas for the visit and a friendly atmosphere during the match, and, of course, congratulations to Cats with the first victory!”

Quarter Time: Cats24 Koalas19
Half Time: Cats 45 Koalas 34
Three Quarter Time: Cats 77 Koalas 55
Final Score: Cats 92 d Koalas 75

It is great to see the game growing so well across two Russian cities. Congratulations to both teams and all of the people associated with the game in Russia over the years. Congratulations also to the St Petersburg Cats on their first win as a club.

Finland’s Season Under Way For 2016

The new FAFL season got under way on the weekend with the first two rounds of the season played out across a three game round robin style format, amended and adapted for the new season. After a season in 2015 where factors impacted a consistent draw, the new measures allow for a better level of round by round action.

The three Finnish teams this year are the Helsinki Heatseekers, Turku Dockers and the Vaasa Wombats. The opening rounds were held in the nation’s capital, Helsinki.

Whilst the Helsinki Heatseekers are the current title holders, the Turku Dockers have already proven they are back with a vengeance, winning both of their matches on the weekend. In a promising sign, the Vaasa Wombats have struggled for numbers for a couple of seasons, but it is heartening to see them play both games and pushed the Heatseekers in their match.

After Rounds 1 and 2 (played together) the FAFL ladder is:

Turku Dockers (Wins) 2 (For) 98 (Against) 26 (Percentage) 377
Helsinki Heatseekers (Wins) 1 (For)51 (Against)72 (Percentage)71
Vaasa Wombats (Wins) 0 (For) 55 (Against) 106 (Percentage) 52

Results:
Helsinki Heatseekers lost to Turku Dockers 1.1.7 to 5.6.36
Turku Dockers defeated Vaasa Wombats 10.2.62 to 3.1.19
Helsinki Heatseekers defeated Vaasa Wombats 6.8.44 to 5.6. ...

Kenguru Cup Kicks Off In Norway

0

Last week saw the  commencement of the new AFL Norway season with the first round of the Kenguru Cup being played at Voldslokka Stadion in Oslo. The following article from the Oslo Crows website details the opening round.

Oslo’s Eastside squad proved it will be the team to beat in Kenguru Cup 2016 after scoring strong wins in a high quality round one under sunny skies at Voldslokka.

Playing with a mixture of new and old faces, the East shrugged off an indifferent start against Oslo West in the first game to run out convincing winners 61 to 18.

With Danny Aukema and Matthew Trzeciak leading the way, East had winners all over the ground. West managed patches of good play, and the continued development of Norwegian national players Hans Olav Heggen and Klas Alexander Harris was evident, but the team was far less fluid and functional in its forward line than its crosstown rivals. East’s forwards converted well, and once the team gained midfield ascendancy, the result was never in doubt.

Game two saw the Easties teach an inexperienced Ås side the finer points of contested, skilled football, and another comfortable win, 53 to 13. There were some encouraging signs for the Battlers however, who will be looking forward to its full-strength squad taking the field following University exams.

In the evening’s final fixture, West took on and conquered the Ås side, which was ably helped out with some extra players from East. The closest contest of the night saw Ås start brilliantly and head into the half-time break up by eight points. West responded however, and hit back with a flurry of second half goals to put the result beyond doubt. Final scores were West 51, Ås 28.

Round one demonstrated that the intensity and skill level of the league continues to improve, and that there is new talent starting to fill the void left by departed players. Development of local players remains a core focus of the competition, and organisers hope that the group of non-Australian players grows for round two and beyond.

Thanks to the timekeepers, scorers, and umpires on the night, who ran all three games well. Special thanks to Anette Smith for driving the now-traditional post match BBQ, which raised much needed funds for the game in Norway.

Round two is Thursday June 2 at Ås.

New ARFLI Format For Irish Footy

The new 2016 ARFLI (Australian Rules Football Ireland) is underway with round two of the series of round robin carnivals having been played at Cork, home of the Leeside Lions. The revised format has been designed to ease some of the travel burden and associated costs for clubs. Each carnival will also feature a women’s clash with local and/or travelling teams involved.

The concept will see each team play two matches of two twenty minute halves, which constitutes two rounds of the season. So after two carnivals (four rounds), the Leeside Lions are the only undefeated team and lead the way so far. For a full view of the 2016 ARFLI fixtures, go to: http://www.arfli.com/2016/04/04/2016-...announced/

The opening carnival was hosted by the South Dublin Swans at Bushy Park, Tenenure. The Lions won both of their clashes, as did the Belfast Redbacks.

Lions 8.8 (56) beat Swans 1.2 (8)
Belfast Redbacks 8.4 (52) Galway Magpies 5.4 (34)
Belfast Redbacks 10.3 (63) South Dublin Swans 3.2 (15)
Lions 9.8 (62) beat Magpies 3.5 (23)

The second carnival (Rounds 3 & 4) was played in Cork and hosted by the Leeside Lions.

Leeside Lions 12.10 (82) d Galway Magpies 1.3 (9)
South Dublin Swans 5.8 (38) lost to Belfast Redbacks 7.1 (43)
Leeside Lions 14.11 (95) d Belfast Redbacks 2.0 (12)
South Dublin Swans 9.5 (59) d Galway Magpies 6.4 (40)

So, after four completed rounds, the ladder sees:

Leeside Lions (Wins) 4 (Losses) 0
Belfast Redbacks (Wins) 3 (Losses) 1
South Dublin Swans (Wins) 1 (Losses) 3
Galway Magpies (Wins) 0 (Losses) 4

The next carnival will be held in Galway on June 11th and will give a huge boost to the home team as they seek their first wins of the 2016 season and Both the Redbacks and Swans try to peg back the Lions’ dominatio ...

German Footy Gathers Steam in 2016

The AFLG’s initial tournament of the 2016 season, the 9’s format, is two thirds complete with the Round 6 matches played last week in Dresden. The format, introduced last season, sees two Hamburg teams (Swans and Pirates) as well as the Frankfurt Redbacks, Munich Kangaroos, Berlin Crocs, Rheinland Lions, Freiberg Taipans, Stuttgart Emus and Dresden Wolves battle out the honours over 10 rounds of 9’s format, with a Grand Final on September 10th.

The 9’s home and away format finishes with Round 7 and Round 8 played concurrently in both Munich for southern German teams and in Hamburg for northern teams. After that the 16’s competition will commence with a four team competition over four rounds between July and September featuring the Munich Kangaroos, Hamburg Dockers, Berlin Crocs and Rheinland Lions.

The Munich Kangaroos lead the field in the 9’s competition, undefeated with nine wins. It could be a battle royale for the second Grand Final berth with the Lions, Crocs and Redbacks all capable of grabbing the spot.
