Croatian Knights & Irish Banshees Claim Euro Cup Honours

0
0

The AFL Europe Euro Cup in Lisbon, Portugal, has been completed with the Croatian Knights triumphant in the men’s tournament and the Irish Banshees taking out the women’s crown. The organisers of the event in Portugal did a wonderful job to showcase the best footy that Europe has to offer and congratulations are in order for their tremendous work.

The Croatian Knights won their second AFL Europe Euro Cup, and their first since downing the Netherlands in Milan, Italy, in 2010. They defeated the Irish Warriors, back in the final again for the first time since winning the title in 2012, in an incredible final that was decided in extra time. Scores were locked at 35 all at the final siren, but the Knights went on a 10 minute extra time assault to eventually win the title 53 to 39.

England defeated Germany to take out third place. France won the Euro Cup Bowl, finishing 5th overall whilst the Netherlands took out the Plate Final against Austria to finish 9th and 10th respectively.

The Irish Banshees downed the England Vixens to take out the women’s tournament in their return to the event, having been absent from last year’s tournament in Croatia. The Croatian Queens made it a great day for their nation, finishing third in the women’s draw and winning the nation’s first ever podium finish.

For host nation team Portugal, whilst they went winless on the field for the event, event co-organiser and AFL Portugal president, David Valente, described it as a major victory for the nation off the field and stated that it was simply “thrilling” to have their national team as a part of the event.

For full details of scores from the event when they have been posted, go to the AFL Europe website at: www.afleurope.org ...

Three Clubs Circling Irish Prospect Mark O'Connor

0

The following article is from Callum Twomey at the www.afl.com.au website.

THREE clubs are in the race to sign Irish prospect Mark O'Connor, who finished his stint in Australia with an excellent run at the NAB AFL Draft Combine.

Geelong, North Melbourne and Melbourne are understood to be keen to sign the 19-year-old, who travelled to Melbourne from Ireland for last weekend's combine at Etihad Stadium.

O'Connor trialed at five clubs (the three chasing his signature plus Essendon and Carlton) during his two-week stay, but has headed back to Ireland to make a decision on where he wants to start his AFL career. He can be signed as a category B rookie.

The 189cm youngster from County Kerry, who is considered one of the brightest prospects in Gaelic football, came fourth overall in the 3km time trial on Sunday with a time of 9:56 to close out his time at the combine before flying back to Ireland.

"I do want to pursue an AFL career. It's definitely something I want to do. It's hard work but it's just so rewarding," he told AFL.com.au.

"At home it's all amateur sport and there's no professionals in the game at all. To be able to spend all of my time trying to improve my game is something that I'd like.

"I'll go back home and talk to my parents and talk things through and see what's on the table."

O'Connor said he was taken aback by his time at AFL clubs and the size of the facilities, and he also attended the Western Bulldogs' Grand Final win over the Sydney Swans earlier this month.

An AFL career was not on his radar until he was asked to test at the International Combine in Ireland earlier this year.

"What I've learned over the past few weeks is everything happens quickly in the AFL. Only a couple of months ago Tadhg Kennelly invited me to the combine held in Ireland and I had played a lot of Gaelic football growing up," O'Connor said.

"There's a few Irish guys out here now and they've opened the door for me to come through the system. I went to the combine in Ireland and Tadhg was interested in bringing me out to see how I'd go against these guys."

O'Connor trained alongside the country's most talented draft hopefuls ahead of the NAB All Stars game on Grand Final eve and impressed recruiters with his clean overhead marking and tidy kicking.

He said he had been "messing about" with the ball in his hands while back at home but had not practiced kicking before landing in Melbourne.

"I looked at all the videos on YouTube about how to kick a footy and that's great, but you need someone next to you and I had absolutely no experience with the ball," O'Connor said.

"I also didn't want to get into any bad habits with my kicking so I waited until I got to Australia before I started to kick the ball, and Tadhg took me for a couple of sessions. I felt more comfortable then under his watchful eye."

AFL Women's league to kick off with NAB as sponsor

NAB is the inaugural sponsor of the new AFL Women’s League.

Andrew Thorburn, NAB CEO, and Gillon McLachlan, AFL CEO, today announced the partnership with the AFL Women’s League, as well as confirming NAB’s continued support of Auskick and the AFL player pathway program for a further six years.

Mr Thorburn said he was excited to be building on the bank’s 14-year partnership with the AFL and proud to be supporting both men’s and women’s football.

“At NAB, we value diversity and we believe in equality. I am invested in building a culture that supports women to achieve their goals; women at NAB, our customers and in the community more broadly.

“That’s why we are backing the AFL Women’s League. It gives footy fans, especially young girls and boys, inspirational role models to help nurture their passion for the game.

“We don’t just sponsor football, we grow it, and we want to make it a better game for all Australians,” Mr Thorburn said.

NAB is the naming rights partner of NAB AFL Auskick, NAB AFL Women’s League, NAB AFL Women’s Rising Star, the NAB AFL Rising Star Program and the NAB AFL Trade Period. The first NAB AFL Women’s Draft will be hosted at NAB’s head office in Melbourne tomorrow (Wednesday 12 October).

Gillon McLachlan said: “the inaugural national Women’s League announcements have captivated the sporting public this year. Women and girls now have a clear pathway to play the game from NAB AFL Auskick to the NAB AFL Women’s League.

“I thank Andrew Thorburn and his team for extending their support of NAB AFL Auskick, the NAB AFL Rising Stars Program and for being the inaugural AFL Women’s League naming rights partner.

“NAB has been, and continues to be, a great sponsor of the AFL and the game’s grassroots. NAB shares our passion to grow the game at all levels and I look forward to the exciting years ahead.”

Mr Thorburn said: “so many of our customers are passionate about AFL and it is such an important part of communities across the country. That’s why we support the program, including NAB AFL Rising Stars and NAB AFL Auskick, which helps take boys and girls from the local oval on a Saturday morning to the elite level.” ...

Internationals a chance in AFL Women's Draft

0
0

The momentum continues to build towards the AFL Women's league 2017 kick-off.  In less than 24 hours most of the players for the league's inaugural season will have been allocated to clubs via tomorrow's draft to be held in Melbourne.

And for the first time (in men's and women's drafts) there is the possibility that there will be internationals that have learnt and played the game in their own country up for grabs.

The AFL tell us there have been around 1300 players register for the draft, and although they have not issued that list, they have confirmed that Kim Hemenway (USA), Katie Klatt (USA) and Kendra Heil (Canada) have all nominated.  They have also confirmed that  Aimee Legault (Canada) has unfortunately not nominated despite speculation that she would.

It is also expected there may be a number of Australian based Irish players such as Gill Behan, who plays for the UTS Shamrocks in Sydney, that may be drafted.

Players have had to nominate a state.  So for example Kim Hemenway has nominated NSW, which means she can only initially be drafted by GWS.  However should she fail to be drafted tomorrow she may be offered a "free agency' place by any other club after the draft (by October 30). Hemenway will not be at the draft tomorrow as she will be preparing to head to Sarasota to play with the New York Magpies at the USAFL's National Championships.

Katie Klatt and Kendra Heil have nominated from Victoria so tomorrow they can be taken by any of the four Victorian clubs and again if not drafted, can be listed by any club during the free agency period.

Of course it would be fair to say that the teams in the competition have not really had a fair chance to assess the talent outside Australia and for many players the 2017 AFL International Cup next year may be their best opportunity to be seen by the scouts and be given a shot at the big time in next year's draft.

The pre-draft listing of Kate Shierlaw from the Wimbledon Hawks was a huge vindication of the game played by women outside Australia, and although Kate learnt to play the game in London she is an Australian.  To have foreign players drafted from the game in their own country would be an even bigger deal and open the way for those women playing footy around the world to know they are part of the pathway to this elite competition.

The eight NAB AFL Women’s teams will draft the majority of their players with 145 players selected in total. Depending on their number of pre-signed players, each team will select between 15 and 19 players.

The Draft will be streamed live on the AFL website: http://www.afl.com.au/womens

The Draft will follow a ‘snaking order’ after the first round.

The first round will proceed as follows:

Teams have already made marquee, rookie and priority player selections.

The remaining three places on the club lists of 27 will be available for ‘free agency’. Free agents are those players who have nominated for the Draft but were not selected and may now consider options to play interstate. Free agents must be selected prior to October 31.

World Footy News wishes all women registered for the draft tomorrow the best of luck.

Free Agency period may be last hope for Internationals

0
0

The AFL National Women's Draft was held in Melbourne today. The 8 foundation clubs of the AFL Women's league set to debut in 2017 added to their initial list of priority picks and rookies with a total of 145 selections in today's draft.

We held out hope that a number of players from Ireland, the US and Canada might be among them but it was not to be. If they are to be a part of the inaugural season they must now hope they can secure a place at one of the clubs during the "free agency period" between now and October 31. Each club will have three places on their list for these players.

Some international connections to footy overseas were however noted.

Brisbane took Jessica Wuetschner at Pick 34.  Wuetschner spent time with the Boston Demons in the USAFL.

GWS took Jacinda Barclay with Pick 65.  Barclay was pictured at the draft in a red footy top with the USAFL logo on it which turns out is from time spent at the Chicago Swans football club this year.  Barclay formerly played Baseball for Australia and played in the Gridiron football "Legends Football League."

Lauren Spark was selected at Pick 76 by the Western Bulldogs.  Spark played footy this season with the Wimbledon Hawks (like Kate Shierlaw who was rookie listed at Carlton prior to the draft).  She was involved in junior footy development and also was assistant coach of the Great Britain women's team the GB Swans at the European Championships this year. A huge feather in the cap of the Wimbledon Hawks to have two players at AFL Women's clubs next year.

Garudas take out All-Asian Cup in Vietnam

0
0
The Asian Championships are being held in Saigon this weekend. Tonight matches kicked off with the All-Asian Cup. This competition is made up of nationals from China, Indonesia and Indochina (combined nations form the team of Indochina).  The three teams played each other in a round robin format with games consisting of 20-minute halves.

In the first game the China Reds demonstrated looked well drilled and used their height and body size to their advantage. The Indochina team were able to match the Chinese in some passages of play and looked dangerous when they got the ball out in the open but in the end it was any easy win for China.

Final score: China Reds (11.6.72) def Indochina (3.2.20).

While the size differential was a little more in their favour they could not match the polish of the Indonesian Garudas who worked well as a team and showed some very skilled passages of play. They looked like they had been waiting for this match for a long time and would have won by a lot more if they had been able to kick straighter (particularly with the wind)

Final Score: Indonesian Garudas (8.19.67) def Indochina (2.0.12).

Going into the final with one win each this match was always destined to be an arm wrestle in stark contrast to the first two matches.

The Garudas were quick out of the blocks and made headway into the breeze in the first half two set up a two goal lead at half time. From here they held on grimly as China pressed hard but were unable to capitalise on opportunities up forward. The Garudas on the turnover also had their chances to put the result beyond doubt. In the heat both teams had players going down with cramp in the last quarter. The defence of both teams was impressive and both teams look to have improved their play since we saw them at IC14. The Garudas take home the Cup running out 12 point winners.

Final Score: Indonesian Garudas (3.4.22) def China Reds (1.4.10).

Most of the players will now back up tomorrow, with the Indochina players breaking out to represent their home nations alongside the expats representing those nations for the Asian Championship.  For all the details and team previews go to http://www.afl-asia.com/asian-championships/

French Season Off To Dream Start

0

Grand Final re-matches, barnstorming come-from-behind victories, exciting debuts, scintillating footy and the sounds of leather hitting boots. No, we are not talking about the battlegrounds of the MCG or Etihad Stadium – this is footy in France, and the new season has kicked off in stunning style across the nation.

Last year the Perpignan Tigers won many admirers with a break out season which saw then just miss out on finals action. They won more yesterday when they launched a stunning comeback against the Toulouse Hawks in the double header at the Stade Robert Barran (Robert Barran Stadium) in Toulouse. For the most part, Toulouse held sway across the first three quarters, but the Tigers were far from finished and stormed home to win an absolute thriller by just four points. Final score saw the Perpignan Tigers 86 down Toulouse 82.

In the earlier game in Toulouse, the new kids on the block – the Blagnac Aviators – took on the Bordeaux Bombers in the first ever “Aviation Challenge”. In the end it was the Bombers supreme with a 40 point win over the debutants, but Blagnac can be proud of their highly competitive debut. Final score saw the Bordeaux Bombers 109 defeat the Blagnac Aviators 69.

Further north in Paris, the Grand Final re-match was contested between the Paros Cockatoos and the Cergy Pontoise Coyotes. The Cockatoos made the most of conditions and got away to a handy lead at quarter time before being reeled back in by the Coyotes by half time. Again, the Cockatoos snuck away in the third quarter, going into the final quarter with a narrow four point lead, but it wasn’t enough to hold back the Coyotes. The final score saw the Cergy Pontoise Coyotes hold on by 17 points with a 104 to 87 victory.

The scheduled match between the paris Cockerels and the Strasbourg Kangourous did not go ahead with the Kangourous withdrawing from the competition until further notice.

Footy continues next weekend when the ALFA Lions host the Toulouse Hawks in Lyon. The Bordeaux Bombers will also play host to the Paris Cockerel ...

Reigning champs look strong on US Nationals Day 1

0

In humid and variable conditions (bright sun to wind and rain) teams from across the US and Canada battled it out in four men’s and two women’s divisions.

Reigning champions the Austin Crows kept their favourites tag as they accounted for the Quebec Saints and Denver Bulldogs in Division A with little fuss and with a win tomorrow morning over LA will be firm favourites for the title again.

DAY 2 STREAMING LIVE - CLICK THIS LINK

Division B was split between two impressive performances from the New York Magpies and the Golden Gate Roos. The Magpies with Alex Aurrichio back from the VFL showing his experience alongside a willing group of accomplices were relentless taking down Orange County and Dallas with little resistance. The Golden Gate Roos did that and more and against the same two teams did not give up a point. So these two have set up a great match tomorrow morning to win the right to playoff for the championship – whoever win we hope they come out in one piece.

The story everyone is watching in the Women’s Division is the Denver Lady Bulldogs who are a chance to win their seventh straight women’s championship. On Day one they beat both Minnesota and Sacramento. But tomorrow morning they play the San Francisco Iron Maidens who also had two wins over Sacramento and New York by big margins. They meet at 11am tomorrow in a game that that both teams will no doubt treat as a Grand Final in the Round Robin tournament format (with the best ladder placing deciding the championship).

In Division II it looks like the Columbus Jackaroos will play off against the Calgary Kangaroos if both teams can win their morning games tomorrow after unbeaten starts to the tournament.

The Austin Crows are the USAFL National Champions for 2016 having beaten the Golden Gate Roos in the final of the USAFL National Championships.  The Crows were out of the blocks early and had a strong lead at half time and looked to be certainties.

Golden Gate continued to push them but in the end were no match for the Austin team.

In Divison 2 the Calgary Kangaroos defeated the Columbus Jackaroos by 36 points and in Division 3 the Portland Steelheads were winners over the North Carolina Tigers by 24 points.

Divison 4 title was taken out by the Ohio Valley River Rats combine.

In the women's Division 1 the San Francisco Iron Maidens ended the Denver Lady Bulldogs run of titles and in Division 2 the Portland Sockeyes defeated the Montreal/Boston combine.

Wanderers and Nightcliff Remain Undefeated – NTFL

0
0

Round Two of the NTFL competition in Darwin was completed on Sunday with two teams, the Wanderers and Nightcliff Tigers, the only undefeated teams in an even start to the season. At the other end of the scale the Tiwi Bombers and Darwin Buffaloes remain winless and will be desperate to turn things around in a hurry.

The Buffaloes faced a fired up St Mary’s unit, fresh from their first round defeat. The Buffaloes led for most of the day, but Saints were always just at arm’s length. It took a four goal to one final quarter (which would have been more but for Saints inaccuracy) to turn the tide in the final quarter.
Final Score: St Marys 17 17 119 d Buffaloes 16 9 105

Similarly, the Tiwi Bombers held Nightcliff at bay for most of the day, going into the final quarter holding a narrow nine point lead. However, the Tigers burst out of the blocks in the final stanza, piling on six goals to one to run away with a four goal victory.
Final Score: Nightcliff 17 18 120 d Tiwi Bombers 14 12 96

The Tah’s winning streak ended at one when they went down to a stronger Wanderers side which led at every change by increasing margins before an even final quarter saw victory by 46 points. The Wanderers have now played two solid games for two wins and are already setting up a tilt to go one better than last year with a flag definitely in their sights and capabilities.
Final Score: Wanderers 15 6 96 d Waratah 8 2 50

In the battle of the south, Southern Districts were too strong for the Palmerston Magpies. After a tight first half, the Crocs were able to gradually pull away from a determined Magpies unit and record a very handy 28 point victory to square their season ledger.
Final Score: Southern Districts 16 12 108 d Palmerston 11 14 80

Next weekend will see a double header at TIO Stadium with the Bombers taking on Wanderers followed by the Tahs and the Buffaloes. The Tigers will play host to the Magpies whilst on Sunday the Crocs will take on St Mary’ ...

Revolution narrow IC17 squad and look to Europe

The USA national side the Revolution have one of the most thorough selection processes of any nation ahead of the International cup. Over the past two years they have been assessing and trialling players from all over the USA. On Sunday the USAFL announced a narrowed squad of 66 players that will represent the USA.

This time around they have announced they will select 30 players from this squad in April next year to bring to the 2017 AFL International Cup in Melbourne. Those named on Sunday that do not make the trip to Melbourne, will be then representing the USA in 2018 on a playing trip to Europe (details yet to be announced).  It has been a very long time since the US national team has travelled to Europe (2001) after years of talk about it happening again it looks like it will get off the ground.

The Revolution team will also take a team to Canada again in 2018.

Among a number of players that represented the USA in Melbourne is 2014 are some notable inclusions.

Alex Aurrichio who has spent the past two years as a ruckman with the Northern Blues in the VFL has been named in the squad and was back playing with the New York Magpies on the weekend.  Another big man in the squad for the first time is Nolan Cox.  Nolan is a key forward and a key member of the Austin Crows team that have just gone back to back USAFL National Championships.  He also happens to be the brother of Collingwood's Mason Cox.

Also named in the US squad for the first time is Michael 'Buddy' Spohn who is a multi-season senior ruckman with the Black Rock Football Club that play in the Southern Football League in Melbourne.  Spohn is originally from San Clemente, California.

Hanley trade to Gold Coast finallly done

0
0

It has been no secret since the season finished that Pearce Hanley would likely leave the Brisbane Lions and early on the Gold Coast Suns were the likely new home for the Irishman.

After 129 games for the Brisbane Lions he has become the best Irish player in the competition famous for his hard running off the hard back line.  But this season something appeared wrong.  And as the Lions continued to struggle at the bottom of the ladder Hanley appeared disinterested.

It is not known publicly for sure where the problem lay, be it with coach Leppitsch (who has now departed the club) or with particular team-mates. At any rate it is hoped a new start at the Gold Coast will see him return to the form of the previous few seasons.

The trade deal between the Brisbane Lions, the Gold Coast SUNS and Port Adelaide sees Pearce Hanley and draft pick no.19 exchanged for a future first-round draft pick and this year’s pick no. 22.

It is not yet known where this leaves his brother Cian who is an International Rookie with the Lions and has yet to play an AFL match due to a bad run of injuries.

Countryman Zach Tuohy has also been looking for a move from Carlton to Geelong but at this stage that deal is yet to be resolved.

The media statement from the Gold Coast Suns follows:

The Gold Coast SUNS are thrilled to announce Pearce Hanley will join the club after a three-way trade was agreed to with the Brisbane Lions and Port Adelaide.

In summary, the trade will see Hanley and selection 67 in the upcoming NAB AFL Draft head to the SUNS in exchange for selections 22 & 30.

The acquisition of Hanley, 27, is a major coup for the SUNS – with the club having expressed an intent to target and acquire elite mature-aged talent through the exchange period.

The popular Irishman, who has represented his country in International Rules, is one of the competition’s best ball users, has an ability to break lines and can damage opposition sides with his run.

Hanley has notched up 129 senior appearances over his nine seasons in the AFL, and featured in the top 5 of Brisbane’s best & fairest award in four of the past five Merrett-Murray medal counts.

General Manager – Football Operations, Marcus Ashcroft confirmed the trade.

“We are rapt an elite player of Pearce’s calibre has expressed a desire to join the Gold Coast SUNS,” Ashcroft said.

“Our priority during the exchange period has been to add mature-aged talent that could make an immediate impact at our football club, and Pearce certainly fits that criteria.

“With our players’ just weeks away from transitioning into their new $22 million training & administration facility, we are entering an exciting period at the Gold Coast SUNS.”

The three-way trade in full will see:

· The Gold Coast SUNS snare Hanley and receive selection 67 from Port Adelaide

· The Brisbane Lions gain the SUNS’ second round selection (pick 22) and also secure Port Adelaide’s future first round selection in 2017

· The Power acquire the Lions’ first round priority selection (19) and the SUNS’ 30th overall selection

The GC SUNS currently hold selections 4, 8, 24, 26, 44, 62, 67 in next month’s NAB AFL Draft.

AFL Middle East Season Set To Start

0
0

The new 2016/17 AFL Middle East season gets under way at the Sevens Stadium in Dubai with a double-header on Friday, 21st October. In the opening match of the fixture the Entertainer (Dubai) Dingoes will take on the Abu Dhabi Falcons. This will be followed by the grand final rematch between the Multiplex Bulls and title holders the Dubai Dragons.

The Doha Kangaroos will start their season in coming weeks once all future fixtures are finalised.

The new season brings all sorts of possibilities, and each team playing on Friday will have the belief that a new season brings.

The Entertainer Dingoes won their first trophy two weeks ago when they claimed the pre-season cup. It heralds a new era for the Dingoes and they go into Friday night’s match against the Falcons with their own bar raised and a second cup on the horizon for this season.

The Dubai Dragons are current title holders and have won four of the last five premierships. They go into the new season as warm favourites to keep the dynasty going, but it won’t be a given – the other teams will ensure that. A win on Friday will send a chilling note to other teams. A loss will be blood in the water and the other teams will taste it.

Bridesmaids in their opening two seasons, the Multiplex Bulls will be absolutely ravenous for a “third time lucky” premiership. They have the talent and the hunger, now they just need the extra ounce of luck. Friday’s result will go a long way to setting up the season.

The Abu Dhabi Falcons have not tasted success for a while now – their last success was prior to the Dragon’s era of dominance. But they have been training well by all accounts and would love to stroll into Dubai and throw some cats amongst the local pigeons.

Whilst the Doha Kangaroos don’t play on Friday, you can bet they will be watching with great interest. They have a great chance to assess the relative strengths and weaknesses of all other sides.

A fascinating Round One await ...

O'Connor decides to be a Cat

Irishman Mark O'Connor has chosen to sign with Geelong Football Club in the AFL after trialling at the NAB AFL Draft Combine in Melbourne earlier this month.  He will be signed to the club as an International Rookie and officially listed in the upcoming National Draft.

Irish media have widely reported his move to "Sleepy Hollow" after he confirmed it on Irish Radio na Gaeltachta’s An Saol ó Dheas this morning.

“It’s a very quiet place, like Dingle, and I was very comfortable there. I was really taken with Geelong.

“When I went in there everyone was very friendly, and I felt at home there,” the 19-year-old midfielder added."

If he is successful in the AFL he could even become more famous than Dingle's greatest resident Fungi the Dolphin.

He would be hoping to have an Irish team mate at the Cats and that could be confirmed by the end of the AFL's trade period with Carlton's Zach Tuohy also looking to play with Geelong next year.

Fellow Irishman Padraig Lucey has spent the last two year's at Geelong by has been delisted by the club since this season's end. ...

Phillipine Eagles win 'Best Ever' Asian Championship

Media Release from AFL ASIA - Wed October 19, 2016

The Philippine Eagles have defeated the Singapore Wombats to win their first ever Asian Championships in spectacular fashion, with a come from behind win in torrential rain at RMIT Vietnam's Saigon South Campus.

A record 520 registered players, including an ever-improving 70 local players representing 13 clubs from across Asia arrived in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam for the biggest two-days of footy Asia has ever seen. The event growing to a second day for the first time in the 17-year history of Asian Champs, with the Indonesia Garudas winning the inaugural All-Asia Cup on the Friday.

The Bali Geckos would also depart Vietnam with their first ever piece of AFL Asia silverware, defeating the Myanmar Fighting Cocks in the final of the 12-team, second division competition.

Eagles fly in the wet
Footy in the Philippines has never looked better after the Eagles' thrilling 3-2-20 to 2-3-15 defeat of the Singapore Wombats in the 6-team Division One competition, capping off a huge 2016 for the Eagles after their Manila Cup success earlier in the year.

The heavens opened up right on cue as both the Division 1 and 2 Grand Finals began, with Singapore taking the early ascendancy in the wet. However, just as they did in the semi final against Hong Kong where they overcame a 3-goal lead to make their way into the Grand Final, it would be the belief and never say die attitude of the Philippines boys who would prevail applying massive pressure on the Singapore defense in the final throws of the game.

Down 2 points with 3-minutes to go, Singapore held on for dear life with a snap from the Philippines being only just touched on the goal line, putting the Eagles just one point down. The Singapore kick out couldn't pass half-way before the ball was pumped back into the Philippines forward line where Eagle Chris Wiese would somehow hold onto a huge chest mark, with a subsequent late challenge from Singapore's Grant Bell costing the Wombats a massive 25-meter penalty and gifting Wiese with an easy kick on the goal line that would see them home.

Inspirational Eagles Captain Evan Spargo was full of praise for his club after the game on the AFL Asia Livestream in saying "Just the belief that we have built, the people from the top to the bottom, everyone has been involved and its a credit to all that we have got this result. Our number one thing is that it was going to be a slog, it was going to be a wet day, lets just get the ball forward and we will be hard at the footy at that time and that's what got us through".

Bali Geckos win

There's always a bit of excitement when the wind picks up in Bali, and the boys in the Quicksilver boardshorts proved their worth as the weather hit, defeating a valiant Myanmar Fighting Cocks team 5-5-35 to 1-4-10.

Loosing their fearless leader Henry Cox in a sickening head clash with a Lao Elephant earlier in the day, the Fighting Cocks battled hard right until the end, but it was the superior fitness of the Geckos in the wet which would see them lift AFL Asia's second division title and the Gecko's first piece of silverware in their long history of competing at Champs.

There was no mistaking long-time Bali President Hinchy's delight after the win on the AFL Asia livestream, "It feels like the MCG on the last day of September mate...15 years of having a crack for the Geckos and the Jakarta Bintangs to finally win this one."

"We had the advantage, we live near the Ocean...we wear boardies, the wet weather was always going to suit us. We’re good in the water and we brought it home" said Hinchy.

Women impressive
In a first for AFL Asian Champs, a Reds v Whites women's exhibition game was held before the finals, with an impressive display from 29 girls from across Asia. The majority of the girls came from the Vietnam Swans' sister club the Saigon Ladies Gaels, with several Viet Celts from Hanoi and Cambodian ladies also making the trip to Saigon for the game. The Red's would defeat the Whites 19-7 in an entertaining contest with Hannah from Cambodia collecting the Best on Ground award.

Driver behind the new initiative, Vietnam Swans Committee member Mairead Scanlon was hopeful this would become a feature of Asian Champs in the future in her post-game interview on the AFL Asia livestream with Asian legends Phil Johns and Mick Francis. "We just encourage all the AFL Clubs around the region to get their girls involved, link up with the Gaelic football clubs...and just get the girls kicking the footy and making it a regular thing at AFL Asia tournaments".

AFL legends lend support to new initiatives

While Western Bulldogs Premiership player Tom Liberatore's short cameo for an undermanned Macau Lightning continues to grab all the headlines back home in Australia, AFL Asia and its clubs are reveling in a massive two-days for footy in Asia which many hope will set the course for future expansion of the game in Asia.

Attending his second Champs to further assist the development of Asia's local and female players was ex West Coast Eagle Andrew Embley, who along with ex-Sydney Swan and current Sydney Board member Brad Seymour, coached the inaugural All Asia Cup and Women's game and conducted Auskick clinics on the sidelines.

Friday's All-Asia Cup is being hailed a huge success, with 61 local players representing Indonesia, China and a combined IndoChina team showing just how far Asian footy has come in a short period of time. The Indonesia Garudas claiming the inaugural Cup after a dominant display over both the Port Adelaide-supported China Reds and the Embley-coached combined IndoChina team who featured players from Cambodia, Lao, Myanmar and Vietnam.

Liberatore and fellow Bulldog Luke Dahlhaus' unannounced attendance at Champs was much welcomed by the Asian footy community, with both happily obliging the many players and supporters who had traveled to Vietnam with photos and autographs throughout the day.

Libba then suprised all by pulling on the boots for a short time for an undermanned Macau Lightning team in their second division game against the Japan Goannas, after AFL Asia had relaxed ring in guidelines for their squad after loosing the majority of their team only weeks out of Champs due to Leighton's unexpected withdrawal from a major job in Macau. Libba's snap from 40 out will be sure to go down in AFL Asia folklore, with the champion quickly retiring to the sidelines following a memorable demonstration of elite football.

A big thanks to all the players, supporters and sponsors who made the 2016 AFL Asian Championships such a huge success!

Rampaging Bulls Down Dragons – AFL Middle East

0
0

The AFL Middle East season opened with the double-header draw at Sevens Stadium in Dubai yesterday. The local footy community was treated to two games, both hotly contested and exciting, though for very different reasons.

The match between last year’s grand finalists, the Dubai Dragons and the Multiplex Bulls, was tight at half time. Both teams were out to make statements and locked horns, if you will, in a territorial fight where neither was prepared to concede. However, after the main break it was the Bulls that hammered home eight goals to one to run out convincing 34 point victors 11 11 77 to 6 7 43.

Whilst the season has a long way to go and any number of things could happen, and the Bulls got off to a flyer last year before going down on the final day of the year, there was still something vaguely ominous about the way they rag-dolled last years’ premiers after half time. Certainly they made a statement that all other teams will have listened to.

In the earlier game, the pre-season cup winners – the Entertainer Dubai Dingoes – were hoping for a perfect start to their season. The Dingoes had every right to go into the game as warm favourites, but the Abu Dhabi Falcons had other ideas. Having flown under the pre-season radar to some degree, the Falcons led their match at every change before clinging on to a narrow four point win.

The wins were valuable in a four match per team season, providing buffers that must be surpassed already. For the Falcons and the Bulls they know well that two more wins would likely be enough to play in the grand final. For the Dingoes and Dragons the matches were a wake-up call and they would hope the losses will be catalysts for a desperate battle from here to gain ground and pass the leaders.

Time is the biggest enemy, and all teams will be looking at how they best use theirs for the rest of this season – particularly that time between the first and final siren ...

Lions Roar In Lyon Season Opener

0
0

The ALFA Lions have added an extra ingredient of interest in the opening CNFA match in Lyon yesterday. In a season that has already shown a welcome evenness, the Lions big win over the Toulouse Hawks has added further intrigue.

Distance, time, travelling arrangements and a host of other factors can impact on a team’s performance and sometimes a hosting team can get a seriously large home ground advantage. But recognition of that alone does not do justice to the performances of host teams. The Lions’ score of 26 19 175 to the Hawks 5 10 40 says that even if the Hawks were down on the day, there is some very serious talent and fire power growing in Lyon.

Over in Bordeaux, the visiting Paris Cockerels proved too strong in the end against a very competitive Bombers team. The final margin of 31 points can say many things, but one of them is that whilst the Cockerels won the match, the Bordeaux Bombers have what it takes to stand up to the best. The final score saw the Cockerels down the Bombers 90 to 59.

With just one more match to play to complete Round Two, five teams share the lead with a win each, with last year’s premiers, the Paris Cockatoos, yet to record a win as well as the Toulouse Hawks. The winner of next weekend’s remaining Round Two match between the Cergy-Pontoise Coyotes and the Perpignan Tigers will sit atop the ladder as the only team with two wins after two rounds.

Round Three will be played over the first two weekends of November with games in Paris when the Cockatoos host the Bombers, Lyon where the ALFA Lions can stand up to the Paris Cockarels and the Toulouse derby when the Hawks take on their new cross-town rivals, the Blagnac Aviator ...
