Lions Secure Minor Premiership

0
0

The ALFA Lions from Lyon in France have secured the minor premiership (short of a miraculous thrashing in their final round match) for the 2017/17 CNFA season. Their convincing win over the Cergy-Pontoise Coyotes last weekend saw them leapfrog the Coyotes on percentage and now have one game left against the Bordeaux Bombers to put icing on the cake.

In the match which many saw as the grand final preview, the Coyotes travelled to Lyon to meet in a match which would help decide top spot. Both teams were undefeated going into the match. In the end it was the hugely improved Lions that took the points, eventually running away to a convincing 51 point victory. The final score saw the ALFA Lions 104 defeat the Cergy-Pontoise Coyotes 53.

The Lions now travel to Bordeaux to take on the Bombers and a chance to remain undefeated for the home and away season. The Bombers, however, are playing for season pride. They missed the finals after having had a good year overall, but would love to finish the year on a high and claim a big scalp at home. Nothing could be bigger that the Lions. The Bombers recently pushed the Coyotes in their recent home match, going down by just three points. They are sure to give the Lions a similar greeting.

In the other finals defining match of the weekend, the Paris Cockerels defeated their younger siblings, the Paris Cockatoos, and narrowly missed out on displacing them from third spot. After a tight first half, the Cockerels broke free in the third quarter – adding 31 points to just 8 for the quarter – to hold a 27 point lead at the final change. The Cockatoos came home hard to narrow the final margin to 10 points, but it wasn’t enough to pinch a victory. The final scores saw the Cockerels 64 defeat the Cockatoos 54.

Two games remain before the finals. The Bombers play the Lions in Bordeaux as mentioned, whilst the Blagnac Aviators host the Perpignan Tigers in Toulouse. The Aviators would love another win in their debut season and will throw everything at the Tigers. Perpignan, however, will be keen to grab a win (and hope that Bordeaux lose) to claim bragging rights of finishing in fifth place, not being able to reach the finals.

But the weekend’s results leave us with the Lions holding outright favouritism, the Coyotes seeking revenge and another grand final spot, the Cockerels peaking at the right time to upset everyone and the Cockatoos still in the finals and desperate to go back to back. It makes for a very exciting season right up until the final siren blow ...

St Mary’s Power To 32nd Northern Territory Flag

0
0

The Northern Territory Football League’s resident powerhouse, the St Mary’s Saints, have won last weekend’s NTFL Grand Final, downing the Wanderers Eagles by 54 points to claim their 31st flag. In a game where the “The Green Machine” was at almost unbackable odds to claim the title, they withstood a brave fight by the Wanderers to coast away in the final quarter.

Just two goals separated the teams at the first break and by half time St Mary’s only held a 16 point lead. Whilst not strolling away with a cavalcade of goals, the Saint defence had kept Wanderers to just two goals for the half.

The third quarter, the premiership quarter, was dour. Saints still extended their lead to 29 points, but the optimistic Wanderers still believed that being less than five goals behind with a quarter to play gave them a small chance if they could lift. But St Mary’s had other ideas and rattled home with a six goal to one final quarter to claim the premiership.

Final Scores: St Mary’s 14 7 91 d Wanderers 4 13 37

As Wanderers felt the emotions of a losing grand final, St Mary’s players, officials and fans deliriously celebrated the clubs remarkable 32nd premiership. That alone is an incredible effort, but made more amazing by the fact that the club only entered the league in 1952. That is a strike rate of 32 flags in 64 seasons. They have also claimed the minor premiership 32 times, been runners-up 17 times and never recorded a wooden spoon. In fact, their worst finish in league history has been fifth place (twice). It is an enviable record.

After such a dominant season, it was fitting that St Mary’s took the flag – winning the minor premiership with just two losses for the season and an unbroken run of 17 straight wins to take the flag. But Wanderers were brave and should be proud of their efforts – the gulf in talent was just too great.

Now the off-season arrives and clubs plan for next year and dream of what the 2017/18 season will bring.

Port Adelaide welcomes Premier Li to Australia

0
0

The Port Adelaide Football Club is delighted to welcome Premier Li Keqiang, Premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, to its first match of the season on Saturday.

As part of the his state visit, Premier Li will, with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, attend Port Adelaide’s AFL Opening Round game against the Sydney Swans at the SCG on Saturday afternoon.

It follows an announcement by Prime Minister Turnbull in Shanghai during April 2016 of Port Adelaide’s intention to play a game for premiership points in Shanghai. That game will take place on May 14 against the Gold Coast Suns.

With this significant attendance of the Chinese Premier at Port Adelaide’s opening game, it is clear both Australia and China are embracing the opportunities that Port Adelaide’s China Engagement Strategy are presenting to the bi-lateral relationship between the two nations.

The China Engagement Strategy will deliver a significant opportunity to Australian business to present to the Chinese community at events around the May 14 game.

Several high-profile Chinese businesses have also joined Port Adelaide’s Open to the World campaign as significant partners, with a further premium partner to join in the coming days.

Port Adelaide’s chief executive officer Keith Thomas and general manager of China Engagement and government relations Andrew Hunter have been invited to the Prime Minister’s official reception for Premier Li and Madame Chong Hong on Thursday in Canberra. Mr Thomas will also attend the Australia China Economic and Trade Cooperation Forum (ACETCF) in Sydney on Friday .

Port Adelaide CEO Keith Thomas:

“We have known about the attendance of Premier Li for some time. It is great that it has been announced in the national media today.

“Although we seek a commercial benefit from our strategy to engage with China, we are aware that sport has a great potential to enhance diplomatic relations. Football, as a quintessentially Australian endeavour and a window into our culture, can play a significant role.

“When Port Adelaide supporters see what happens both on and off the field on Saturday, they will walk even taller and will be pretty excited by what lay ahead in 2017 and beyond.”

Manchester Mozzies Almost Ready For Champion’s League

0

With the 2017 AFL Europe Champion’s League tournament looming in Amsterdam, the Manchester Mozzies have shared their views about the event and their preparations. Pool teams will be announced soon, but this article from the Mozzies’ website gives an insight into what happens in the lead-up to one of AFL Europe’s showpieces.

After nearly three months of training, the Mozzies are just two training sessions away from AFL Europe’s Champions League 2017. Though the groups for the initial stages of the tournament are yet to be announced the Mozzies are looking forward to the challenges that lay ahead in Amsterdam on April 1st.

Coach Chris Sproule has been including plenty of match simulation drills in training getting the squad ready for the intensity the AFL Champions League brings. “The boys are looking good, they’ve had plenty of running in their legs and their commitment to the contest is really impressive,” Coach Sproule said last week.

The Mozzies came away from the 2016 Champions League with the runners-up status. Though the squad who travelled to the ‘Dam last year were proud of their improvement on the year before, you could tell there was an air of disappointment in the locker room after the final.

“This year, more than ever, we are psyched about the competition.” Key midfielder Chris Britton said, “To be able to test ourselves against Europe’s best, and represent our league will never get old. We have a strong squad going, so definitely looking to ruffle some feathers.”

With every member of the squad working hard for the tournament the selection headache for Coach Sproule is the worst it’s been for any Mozzies coach. “The four Aussies on the field rule is no longer a problem for us, the British and Irish boys are just as good, in some cases better!” Sproule said, “Picking the 16-man squad is hard enough, never mind the starting nine.” Six members of the squad travelling to the ‘Dam have represented either the GB Bulldogs or Irish Warriors, a feat the club are immensely proud of (we will be publishing an article around Mozzies at the IC later this year).

With two more sessions to go before AFL Europe’s Champions League 2017, the Mozzies are excited but focussed on the tournament, and their aims going into the day of footy.

As a club, we are still looking for new players from any background. So, if you want to give Aussie Rules a go or just want to meet some new people and have some fun, get in touch with us on Facebook or Twitter.

Tyne Tees Tigers Prepare For ANZAC Commemoration

0
0

As clubs and nations prepare for this year’s ANZAC Day services and commemorations across the world, the Tyne Tees Tigers from Newcastle, England, are marking the event in their own special way. The club is also keen to gain the support and assistance of any interested in joining their special service. The following article comes from the Tyne Tees Tigers website.

ANZAC Day, 25 April, is one of Australia’s most important national occasions. It marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War.

Australians recognise the 25th April as a day of national remembrance, which takes two forms. Commemorative services are held across the nation at dawn – the time of the original landing - while later in the day, former servicemen and servicewomen meet to take part in marches through the country’s major cities and in many smaller centres. Commemorative ceremonies are more formal, and are held at war memorials around the country. In these ways, ANZAC Day is a time at which Australians reflect on the many different meanings of war.

The Tyne Tees Tigers pay tribute to all ANZAC servicemen and women and specifically to Stanley Chippendale of Parramatta, New South Wales.

Stan served in France during the First World War, receiving the Distinguished Conduct Medal for his actions under fire in 1916. Sadly, Stan was wounded during the war and evacuated to England where he was to succumb to his injuries. Stan was buried in Newcastle upon Tyne many thousands of miles away from his homeland.

Please join the Tigers in paying our respects to Stan and all ANZACs at St. Andrews Cemetery, Tankeville Terrace, Jesmond, NE2 3BU on ANZAC day, Tuesday 25th April at 6.00pm.

Whilst many clubs and individuals will have their own involvement in ANZAC Day events, perhaps the biggest across Europe in football terms will be the 9th annual ANZAC Cup match in Villers-Bretonneux. AFL Europe, one of the key facilitators of the event, state on their website:

“AFL Europe is excited to announce that applications are now open for the Australian Spirit team to compete in the 9th Annual ANZAC Cup in Villers-Bretonneux, France.

The small town of Villers-Bretonneux in Northern France has a strong connection with Australian Armed Forces. On 24th April 1918, the town was captured by German forces. Overnight the Australian troops retaliated and by dawn on the 25th April 1918 the town had be retaken.

The ANZAC Cup is played between the Australian Spirit team and French National side for both men and women and is part of the ‘Australia Week’ celebrations held in Villers-Bretonneux in the lead up to ANZAC Day.”

The original Tyne Tees Tigers article can be found at: https://www.tyneteestigers.co.uk/anzac-day whilst more information about the ANZAC Cup can be found through AFL Europe on their website or Facebook page at: http://www.afleurope.org/tag/anzac-day/ (website) or https://www.facebook.com/AFL.Europe.Ltd/ωhc_ref=SEARCH&fref=nf (Facebook).

FOOTY AROUND THE WORLD: Tonga

0

9080e94d3481ed914fe3a53d0d51ae13

The following story originally appeared on Frederick's Blog and the original article can be found here.

The South Pacific country of Tonga has been introduced to footy fairly recently, but they’ve taken to the sport quickly and have been able to earn their stripes on the international level. The small Polynesian archipelago of roughly 103,000 people is home to many talented athletes.

Tongans have historically favoured other full-contact sports throughout their history, as rugby union is their national sport and rugby league is also widely played in the islands. This influence is apparent in the growing Tongan diaspora, specifically in Australia and New Zealand.

Footy wasn’t introduced to Tonga until the 1980s, when a couple of Australian teachers visited Tongan schools and managed to show the kids the rules of the game. Later on in the 90s, Ewen Gracie, a teacher from Melbourne, worked at a Tongan high school and attempted to establish an ongoing school-based Aussie rules competition with reasonable success

.

The Tongan Australian Football Association (TAFA) was founded in January 2003 by Aussie ex-patriates Tim Valente and Mark Korsten. The teams grew rapidly in skill and in numbers, and the following year they sent the first Tongan footy player overseas to compete – Sila Va’enuku, a former rugby union footballer, traveled to Melbourne to play in the Australian Football Multicultural Cup alongside a handful of Tongan Australians.

By 2008, Tonga’s national footy team, the Tigers, were hoping to have the numbers to compete in the Australian Football International Cup, but they didn’t qualify. They tried again in 2011, and surprised many by placing ninth. Despite losses to Nauru and Papua New Guinea, the Tongans showed enough promise to return to the competition three years later.

At the 2014 International Cup, Tonga beat Japan, Pakistan, and India in decisive victories, while also suffering losses to Canada and South Africa. The Tongans finished sixth in the competition that year and brought renewed optimism for the 2017 edition of the Cup.

c_23-tonga_vs_nz

Many Tongan youngsters are involved in footy to this day, with the U16 national team winning the 2009 AFL Oceania Cup and earning runner-up honors in 2010.

Currently, the Tongans have less than 200 registered footballers nationwide, but the sport continues to grow in popularity and has an established presence in five different Tongan high schools.

TONGANS IN THE AFL
  • Israel Folau (played 2011-2012) – A Tongan Australian who grew up in both Sydney and Brisbane, Folau played in the National Rugby League with the Melbourne Storm (2007-2008) and the Brisbane Broncos (2009-2010) before surprising many by switching to Aussie rules. Folau played for the AFL’s Greater Western Sydney Giants as a utility player. He played in 13 AFL games and 15 games in the North East Australian Football League (NEAFL) before switching football codes again, this time to rugby union.
  •
  • Peni Mahina (played 2014-present) – One of the most famous Tongan footy players, Mahina is the son of rugby union legend Malakai Mahina. He surprised many when he decided to pursue Aussie rules, but has since become one of the most consistent playmakers for the Tongan national team, starting in the 2011 and 2014 International Cups.

Iceland To Host Arctic Cup this weekend

0
0

The Icelandic capital city of Reykjavic will host the fledgling Arctic Cup later this weekend in a huge boost for footy in Iceland and a great opportunity for teams headed to the nation for the event. An Iceland team will compete against the visiting Baltimore-Washington Eagles from the USA, the Halifax Dockers from Nova Scotia in Canada, Port Malmo Maulers from Sweden and the South East London Giants from England.

Featuring men’s and women’s matches, the tournament will take place at the suburb of Fossvogur on Saturday 24th March. Competing teams will arrive in Reykjavic Friday and Sunday will be spent sightseeing and taking in as many charms as possible from around nearby sights. The carnival is a pre-season match for visiting teams, but also a kick-start for interest in the game in Iceland.

The South East London Facebook page details the event:

We are pleased to confirm Iceland as the country for our 2017 Pre-Season trip.

We will be playing in a massive 9-a-side international tournament against Iceland as well as clubs from the USA (Baltimore Eagles) and Canada (Halifax Aussie Rules FC). The tournament will be for men's and women's teams.

Everyone from our club is invited to this trip, along with your partners who may want to play or just come along for the parties.

Also, new players who plan to join the Giants in 2017 are also strongly encouraged to attend.

The Baltimore-Washington Eagles see the tournament as a great experience for their club on many levels. According to board member and organiser, Ryan Cartwright, “the Arctic Cup is slated for the weekend of March 25th. Ten men and ten women from the USA will embark to Iceland to take on some their local clubs from Canada, Iceland, London, and Malmo Sweden. The women's will be a combined Baltimore-Washington, NY, and Boston team vs Southeast London.

The idea started with a friendly international match between the Baltimore Washington Eagles and Iceland which soon snowballed into a mini nine v nine tournament with five men's teams and two women's teams.

We expect cold and wind, but a fast tempo since the games will be much quicker with nine a side and a smaller field. We also expect to create some lifelong memories and friendships. Everyone is looking forward to experiencing the beautiful island of Iceland with a chance to see the northern lights and experience the blue lagoon.

The international exposure will be huge for our club as well as set a precedent for a USAFL club to venture outside of North America. Hopefully this is the start of an annual tournament and might open up ideas for future international tournaments between local club.”

It is sure to be a wonderful event, both from a football promotion and team building point of view. It is also a great chance for Icelandic footy to be promoted locally and hope that the game can build bigger again, especially if this event becomes a regular occurrence as is hoped.

Mumbai Football League Up and Running In India

0
0

Australian Rules football has been growing impressively across India for a number of years now, driven in no small way by the drive and foresight of many people, most notably Sudip Chakraborty who was able to get the game accepted in states across India. Most commonly this saw small localised one-off tournaments or larger national events – almost all of which were singular annual events.

The first national tournament, the Indian National Championship Of Australian Football, run under the guise of AFL India was held in Calicut (Kerala state) in 2012, then Goa in 2013, Mumbai in 2014, Kolkata in 2015 and again in 2016. These were the foundation blocks for which localised competitions could potentially grow.

But the Mumbai Footy League, in conjunction with Reclink India and India Unbound, has launched the first ongoing home and away season for teams. The launch this year of the Mumbai Footy League’s MFL17 season sees a competition which will be replicated by Reclink India across other Indian states and cities over time.

The format is an AFL 9’s setup but with full contact. The MFL17 season runs across 15 rounds throughout March and April, culminating with a Grand Final on the 1st May. The competition is open age and the following teams from across parts of Mumbai are featured:

Matunga Tigers (one of the original Mumbai-based teams)
Mahim Cats (also an original Mumbai-based team)
Churchgate Lions
Charni Road Eagles
Grant Road Bombers
Mumbai Central Giants

According to league co-ordinator, and long-time devotee of the game in India, Sumesh Sawant, “this is the first league tournament ever played in Mumbai in India. We played the Mumbai Footy Cup as a two day tournament [previously] but this time we playing [as a whole] league.”

“We are not part of AFL India anymore. We are separate body now as Reclink India which is part of Reclink Australia. We are running our footy activities separately all over India.”

Whilst Reclink would be the first to admit that they couldn’t be where they are today without the work of so many others to promote and drive the game across India, it is commendable that the organisation is taking the proactive stance to push a city wide competition as a blueprint for growth elsewhere in the sport loving nation.

The opportunities for further growth and acceptance of the Australian national game will increase dramatically as further city-based competitions appear, and this is where Reclink’s endeavours will be invaluable to Australian Rules football in India.

But for now, fans can get behind the Mumbai Footy League and support the Cats, Tigers, Lions, Bombers, Giants or Eagles and fall in love with the game.

Aviators Avoid Spoon, Lions Claim Minor Premiership

0
0

The Blagnac Aviators have negotiated their first season in the CNFA and finished with a smile after enjoying a 40 point victory over the Perpignan Tigers. Their second win of their debut season has seen them leapfrog their Toulouse siblings, the Toulouse Hawks, to claw their way off the bottom of the ladder.

The final score saw the Aviators down the Tigers 113 to 73.

The Blagnac Aviators will sit down now and measure their success over the course of the season, but they will be delighted to have won their first game against the Hawks earlier in the season. To claim another win against the Tigers will very likely see the club rank their first season as “above expectations” and an exciting platform to build on for next season.

Also above expectations would be the efforts of the ALFA Lions. The club downed the Bordeaux Bombers in their final match with a resounding 51 point victory. In doing so, the Lions have gone through their season undefeated with seven wins from their seven home and away games – a feat that they could only dare to dream about pre-season. The win is the ideal preparation for finals action.

Final scores saw the Lions down the Bombers 142 to 91.

The Tigers and Bombers would both be disappointed that they missed their chance to finish the season with wins and a positive note for next season. But both performed well at times across the season.

The Bombers won only two games, but remained competitive in all of their matches – their loss on the weekend to the Lions being their heaviest for the season. They were unlucky to lose to the Cergy-Pontoise Coyotes by just three points. Their fifth placed finish is probably a fair assessment.

The Perpignan Tigers won two of their first three matches and looked set to enjoy their best season yet. However, a couple of heavy 100+ point defeats upset the apple cart and their last round loss was certainly a game that got away. But a seven point loss to the Cockerels in Paris, and pushing the Lions to a 17 point result proved that the Lions are potentially better than sixth place would suggest.

The Toulouse Hawks might well have claimed the wooden spoon, but they are also very aware that their sacrifices to help the Aviators get started provide an inaccurate reflection of where they sit. It is certainly possible that both the Hawks and Aviators grow over the off-season – both having the potential to challenge for finals next season.

The finals series comes next with the Lions, Coyotes, Cockatoos and Cockerels eyeing the 2016/17 flag. Details will be confirmed soon, but at this stage all four teams will believe they are a chance to go all the way. The Lions, after their tremendous home and away season, deservedly hold favouritism, but finals time is a different beast to what has happened before.

The Cockatoos are reigning champions and know what it takes to win a flag. So do the Cockerels, the league’s most successful club. The Coyotes are desperate to turn their form of the past few seasons into their first flag. All of these teams will have the Lions in their sights in what is sure to be an exciting finals series. ...

Younger Hanley Makes Lions Debut

Cian Hanley had all the ingredients to obtain anonymity. Having been recruited by the Brisbane Lions as an international rookie in 2014, the younger brother of new Gold Coast Suns recruit, Pearce Hanley, has endured injury and media attention directed towards his brother after his trade to the Gold Coast Suns last year.

In some ways he has been the forgotten Lion, but his quiet determination to overcome injury and chase the same dream as his brother has been agonisingly long but impressively tenacious. Having to overcome a serious ACL injury, then ongoing groin problems, Hanley has done it tough since joining the club from a Gaelic Football background for Country Mayo. On the weekend, Cian Hanley lined up for the Brisbane Lions in their final NEAFL practice match against the Gold Coast Suns.

Hanley ran out onto the field wearing the Lions’ number eleven jumper vacated by his brother when he left for the Suns. According to the NEAFL website report on the match, “Cian Hanley too was playing his first game for the Lions, but unlike Berry, is no stranger to the Lions.”

“The Irishman has been on the list since 2014 when he was picked up as an international rookie, but persistent injuries have kept him from ever taking the field.”

“It was his first ever game of Australian Rules football, but Hanley’s performance certainly wouldn’t have suggested as much. Like his brother, ex-Lion turned Sun, Pearce Hanley, speed was his key attribute, setting up plenty of scoring opportunities for the away side as a result.”

It continues a long, long journey for the younger Hanley, but his performance vindicates the Lions’ faith in him. On the other side of that coin, Hanley has done all in his immediate power to repay the faith the Lions have shown.

For the record, the Gold Coast Suns downed the Brisbane Lions by 37 points at Metricon Stadium. It remains to be seen whether Cian Hanley is chosen by the Lions for their Round One clash next weekend against the Sydney Swans at the South Pine Sporting Complex in Brisbane, but Hanley’s performance has propelled him firmly into selection calculations and a chance to take his AFL journey another significant step further.

Mason Cox aims high in 2017

Collingwood big man Mason Cox is healthy and ready to be a difference maker in 2017. Now on the senior list, he’s in line to play a larger role in part due to a couple of departures-- Premiership player Travis Cloke to the Western Bulldogs, and second ruckman Jarrod Witts, who is now a Gold Coast Sun.

At 211 cm Cox is able to play some in the ruck, but his soccer and basketball skills make him versatile enough to win his fair share of marking contests on the Collingwood forward line. Certainly his teammates love having a big target up front.

By now you’ve certainly heard the story of the big man (and fellow Texan). He played on the scout team for the Oklahoma State University women’s basketball side, worked his way onto the men’s team, graduated with an engineering degree, and was about to start a new job when he showed up at the AFL combine in 2014.

He played for the Collingwood reserves in 2015, got the call up after two VFL games in 2016, and went on to kick the first Pies goal in the ANZAC day match against Essendon.

Cox kicked 17 goals in 2016 but shoulder and hip injuries limited him to 11 games. While he felt he exceeded expectations, he told ESPN Australia he wants more.

“I'm definitely looking forward to next year and having a bit more of an impact and being a bit more consistent as far as games go. Toward the end of the season, I had a few injuries that split me out of the squad for a bit. Hopefully I'll be healthy the whole year and be able to give all I can to the team,” Cox said.

Cox is eager to prove that he’s not a sideshow and can compete at the highest level of footy. Early returns are positive - he had solid preseason showings against Essendon, Fremantle, and Richmond. His stat line included one behind, eight disposals and 29 hitouts in Collingwood’s round one loss to the Western Bulldogs.

Younger Hanley Brother Passes Away In Ireland

0
0

The www.afl.com.au website has announced the passing of the younger brother of both Pearce and Cian Hanley. The story below can be found at http://www.afl.com.au/news/2017-03-30/hanley-brother-loses-battle-with-cancer-aged-16

TOMMY Hanley, the younger brother of Pearce and Cian, has passed away.

The 16-year-old died in a Dublin hospital on Tuesday night Australian time after suffering with cancer.

Pearce (Gold Coast) and Cian (Brisbane Lions) travelled back to Ireland to be with Tommy and made it home in time to see their brother before his death.

The Suns and Lions have both released statements to express their condolences to the Hanley family.

Tommy's illness made headlines around the world when entertainment star Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson posted a personal Instagram message to the youngster in December.

Both clubs will wear black armbands as a mark of respect this weekend.

Pearce played his first match in Suns colours on Saturday, against his former club the Lions, while Cian played his first ever match of Australian football in the NEAFL after two injury-ravaged years at the club.

Neither the Suns nor the Lions have confirmed when the brothers will return to football

Hawks/Dogs draw and Roos upset Pies AFL Nauru Round 4

Round 4kickedoffon Saturday with the Magpies unbeaten run ended by the previously winless Kangaroos. On Sunday the Hawks and Dogs ended their clash with scores level and the Hawks wishing they had kicked a little straighter.  For all the details read on.

BOMBERS TOO STRONG FOR THE CATS

A strong start from the Bombers kicking 6 straight goals in the first quarter to set up their win. Kaison Tatum was in devastating form in the first quarter taking strong contested marks and kicking 3 majors. Tango Hubert continued his recent good form for the Bombers competing strongly in the forwards, both in the air and on the ground. To the Cats credit they fought back hard after their slow start and kept close to the Bombers eventually going down by 22 points.

Trent Depaune was solid all day with 16 disposals, 5 marks and 2 goals. Pilo Dagiaro and Shawn Kemp Maaki also contributed with 16 disposals each and kicking goals. But the Bombers middle brigade led by Agir who had a game high 23 disposals and 8 marks and German Grundler who collected 20 disposals and 2 marks, controlled the game maintaining the lead they had established in their 1st quarter blitz. Tipung Kamtaura played mostly in the ruck and clearly won the battle of the rucks. Johnny Dagiaro and Daniel Daniel were also important for the Bombers, collecting 18 and 15 disposals respectively.

Mick Vorback was solid in defence with 15 disposals and 4 tackles. The Bombers now head to the last home away match next week in a top of the ladder clash against the Magpies, in what should be a classic encounter.

KANGAROOS HOP ALL OVER THE MAGPIES IN UPSET WIN
If someone was to say that the Kangaroos will get up to win after trailing the undefeated Magpis by 5 goals in the last quarter, you would be excused to think that it was an April fools joke. But it was no joke. The Kangaroos awoke like a sleeping giant, kicking 8 goals in the last quarter to hop all over the Magpies and score an amazing win. Roos forward Joeson Kanimea caught fire in the last and was unstoppable. The Magpies  threw everything at him but he played like a man possessed taking 8 marks and kicking 5 goals in the last quarter to clinch the win.

Roo recruit Deamo Baguga provided great leadership for the Roos with his constant talking and encouragement of players. His quick long kicks into the Roos forward line enabled Joeson to be isolated in one on one contests. Charles Dagiaro was at his damaging best picking up 24 disposals, 6 marks and kicking 1 goal. Comeback kid Marcus Paul Detenamo, played an important role chipping in with 3 goals.

As for the Magpies, they would be dirty with their poor last quarter after having controlled the game for the first 3 quarters. Dave Mwaredaga with 23 disposals, Kenneth Oppenheimer 20 disposals, 9 marks and 2 goals, Mal Batsiua 20 disposals and 4 marks, Kazaam Baui 17 disposals and 10 marks, Bagewa Detudamo 17 disposals and 3 marks and Yoshi Harris with 15 disposals, 6 marks and 2 goals were their main contributors. Young defender Tama Jeremiah also played well in defence. But the day belonged to the rampaging Roos who caused the upset of the season so far as they hopped all over the Magpies, in a barnstorming finish. Great win!

HAWKS AND DOGS IN A THRILLER
Few people would have given Hawks a chance after their abysmal effort last week, but it was a different Hawks team that ran onto the field on Saturday to take on the Bulldogs. After an even 1st quarter, the Hawks came out firing in the second kicking 5 goals to the Bulldogs 2. Issel Daniel led the way kicking 4 goals in the second. In the 2nd half the Bulldogs hit back as the game tightened up. In the last quarter young Bulldogs forward Jarlik Agir kicked 3 goals as the Bulldogs pressed hard. But Issel Daniel stepped up again with crucial goals to wrestle back the lead. In the dying minutes with scores level, both teams went in hard to break the deadlock but time ran out.

Hawks young star Jeremiah Kam was again fantastic for the Hawks taking 5 intercept marks and collecting 18 disposals. Another young Hawk star Darnel Diema was also brilliant with game high 26 disposals, 4 marks and kicking a goal. The skillful Hawk Darby Rodiben picked 16 disposals and 2 marks while Ruckman Jencke Jeremiah won the ruck duel against Lennox Agege, picking up 17 disposals, 10 marks, 10 hit-outs and kicking a goal. For the Bulldogs, Renato Hubert played his best game for the season picking up 14 disposals, 6 marks and kicking a goal. Niga Haulangi was busy as usual with 20 possessions, 8 marks and 2 crucial spoils in defence. Dontello Moses was also important with 16 disposals and 8 marks.

The 2017 Arctic Cup (or How We Became Vikings in 72 Hours)

0
0

The following article by Molly Halberstadt and Ryan Cartwright, posted on the USAFL website, looks at the recent Arctic Cup played in Iceland. The article gives a great insight into the event, including the results and also the overall “uniqueness” of what is hoped to be a permanent footballing fixture for years to come.

"Who thought footy would bring me to f***ing Icelandω" says a chilly Ross Levesque, bitterly surveying his drenched apparel against a backdrop of rugged rocky terrain and steep dark hills rising in the distance.

But it wasn't strictly footy that brought him to Iceland - rather, his brother Jay, whom Ross introduced to footy in 2003 and who is now a USA Revolution veteran, was the larger factor for Ross' short trip. The two faced off in the Arctic Cup, with Ross playing for a combination Swedish/Icelandic team and Jay for the Baltimore Washington Eagles.

While the Eagles triumphed over their many opponents to take home the Arctic Cup, the brothers were far from the only ones bridging the gap of opposing teams at the northernmost Australian Rules Football international tournament ever played: the inaugural Arctic Cup on March 26, 2017 in Reykjavik, Iceland.

Though all attendees played for specific national banners, the player nationalities spanned a wide spectrum; in addition to the typical Australian presence across teams, the Swedish team consisted of at least half Americans, and other teams included French, Irish, and copious other nationalities in the basket of accents and origins. A truly international tournament was linked by numerous players; among them the Levesque brothers, New York Magpies’ Ashley Singer defecting to the London team for the next year, Ryan Cartwright having played with the London Giants whilst there on business, Canada’s “Dutchie” on the American KC Power, and several others. In fact, early discussions of the tournament were met with reactions on social media like “so let me get this straight… the Americans are playing Australian Rules Football against the English in the Grand Final of the Arctic Cup in Icelandω” Indeed, this tournament’s interconnected nature represents not only the spread of footy across the globe, but also an intersecting world footy community coming together for a new iconic competition and hopefully a pre-season footy tradition.

In the face of adversity, together we prevailed over our common enemy: Icelandic weather in March. From the moment we touched down in Keflavik Airport, the sustained winds and freezing rain left little doubt that the impending tournament would be a miserable affair. Like the bare boreal birch branches, we spent Thursday and Friday shivering under the gray sky as the sharp wind sent sleet soaking through our raincoats.

We were pleasantly surprised when Saturday dawned almost sunny and barely overcast as we made our way to the grounds. With a midmorning start at 10am, the temperature read 4 degrees Celsius, but felt closer to -1 on the turf at Iceland’s Valur Sports Association. A soccer field in the capital’s suburbs had been fashioned into a makeshift footy pitch, with soccer goal posts designating the lines between goals and behinds, and the rectangular turf outlined with soccer dimensions. The comparatively decent weather subsisted throughout the matches, excepting a brief few moments of hail and cyclone winds let loose by Viking gods during the Grand Final.

As the tournament commenced, Sweden’s Malmo Maulers combined with Iceland’s budding Reykjavik Bulls as a formidable Scandinavian squad against USAFL’s Baltimore Washington Eagles, the combined Halifax & Quebec Atlantic Pirates, and the Southeast London Giants. The Atlantic Pirates were led by crafty rover Jonah Scott, whose uncanny footy instincts hugely benefited the Canadians – but not enough to defeat the London Giants’ unified teamwork, captained by Greg Ross. The Giants played as one solid unit against Canada and took down the Scandinavian combine in an impressive knock-down, drag-off fight. Scandinavia’s brave efforts led to individual victories and an excellent display of skill but the talented team was overpowered by their rivals and, like their British and Canadian counterparts, ultimately eliminated by a cohesive Baltimore Washington team playing some of their best footy ever.

The Baltimore Washington Eagles started slow but eventually took home the tournament, going 3-0 against London (20-8), Scandinavia (50-25), and Canada (39-21), with the Lady Eagles persevering over their London opponent as well (23-19). The Giants men shot out to an early 7-0 lead, but were unable to sustain their kicking power without the wind as the Eagles roared back in the second half. The Eagles’ captain and Revolution player Jay Levesque’s spectacular play throughout the tournament earned him Best On Ground – even one London player’s strategic mooning and subsequent heckling of Levesque’s skin-tight leggings couldn’t make him miss a shot. Jay was joined by Revolution hopefuls Ryan Cartwright and Zac Taylor as they dominated the forward line.

Ultimately, the team with the right wind advantage secured the game; at one point during the women’s match, the Lady Eagles’ ruck (borrowed from the NYC Magpies) Andrea Hargrave kicked directly into the sharp wind and watched the strong gusts carry her perfect kick completely off the mark. Hargrave was hardly the only victim of sustained winds – the gales blew the strongest during the second half of the final, making it nearly impossible to kick further then 20 meters into the wind without a fittingly Australian boomerang effect. However, the Lady Eagles achieved a three goal comeback to take the game, playing with the wind on their side in the second half of their abbreviated match.

Volunteer umpires truly made the tournament possible, calling a clean and fair game: special thanks to AFL London chairman David Field, Baltimore Washington Eagles Aussies Matthew Byrne and Kit Drury, as well as Friðgeir Torfi Ásgeirsson for facilitating the tournament. Additionally, Iceland’s national rugby coach Ranald Haig secured indoor facilities at Sporthúsið on the night prior for those hoping to practice a kick, and reserved a private room at the bar Hressó in downtown Reykjavik.

As the tournament came to an end, festivities resumed at Hressó, where the teams once again mPhotoingled and cast aside all competition from earlier in the day, to enjoy the trophy ceremony as one unified international team, and to begin talks for next year’s Arctic Cup. Of course, in its tangible form, the coveted “Arctic Cup” was more “Arctic Hollowed-Out Horn” than a standard beer receptacle, but we drank from it nonetheless. Like the Iceland Vikings of old – renowned throughout history for their Aussie Rules Football passion, of course – we battled furiously for that trophy horn, with myriad accents and languages shouting instruction as our frozen fingers clutched damp footballs in the light hail under the glowing expanse of the Aurora Borealis.

AFL Europe Champions League 2017 - Review

The following article from the AFL Europe website gives a comprehensive review of last weekend’s AFL Europe Champions League tournament held in Amsterdam.  Congratulations go again to the West London Wildcats, winning their third title by downing hosts, the Amsterdam Devils – and still the only winners of the event since its inception. The Wimbledon Hawks women’s team took their first title, downing the Odense Lionesses in the women’s final.

Champion teams from throughout Europe converged on Amsterdam over the weekend to contest the 3rd annual AFL Europe Champions League.

With 24 teams (19 men’s, 5 women’s), 16 umpires, countless volunteers, 5 pitches and 60 matches across the day it was always going to be a massive tournament for all involved.

 The Group Stages

The women’s group was a tight contest from start to finish. The Paris Cockerelles started their campaign with a hard-fought win over the Odense Lionesses while the Port Malmo Lynx knocked over pre-tournament favourites, the Wimbledon Hawks. The Mixed Team, led by a host of GB Swans, proved a difficult opponent winning their first three games.

The Cockerelles continued their strong form throughout the group to finish atop of the table before progressing in the semi-finals having only dropped a game to the Mixed Team. They were best served by Coline Duquet and Camille Portal who were dominating games in the midfield.

The Lionesses finished second with two wins, two losses next to their names while the Hawks and Lynx rounded out the table to with one win apiece.

The men’s competition was divided into four groups (3 groups of 5, 1 group of 4). Group A proved the closest of the three with the Leeside Lions and Farum Cats the standouts. The North West Eagles, Cardiff Panthers and Oslo Crows each took a game off one another showing just how close the three teams were. Two of the games of the tournament took place in this group with the Leeside Lions and Farum Cats finishing their encounter at 20 apiece while the North West Eagles and Cardiff Panthers fought out a nail-biter on the live stream with the Eagles holding on for an 8-point victory.

Group B consisted of 2 time defending champions, the West London Wildcats, Paris Cockatoos, Glasgow Sharks, Zaprude Giants and Sussex Swans. It was no surprise that the Wildcats were the early favourites but an in-form Cockatoos and Glasgow Sharks showed that they had what it took to give the defending champions a scare. The Giants and Swans struggled against the bigger sides but represented their clubs well and will only be better for the experience.

Last year’s losing finalists the Manchester Mozzies were met strongly by the boys from Munich in Group C. Their match went down to the wire with the Mozzies just edging past them 28-22. The Bordeaux Bombers continued with the form that saw them lift the French Cup in December last year finishing third in the group after knocking off the Port Malmo Maulers and wildcards, the Styrian Downunderdogs.

The final group, Group D, consisted of four teams, hosts, the Amsterdam Devils, the Norrtalje Dockers, the Zagreb Dockers and Russian United. This group played longer halves to ensure they played similar game time to the other three groups. The Devils were on a mission, after two years of just being off the pace, wanting to prove to their home crowd they were the real deal in 2017. The Norrtalje Dockers started strongly against Russian United before failing to trouble the Devils and Zagreb sides. Russian United again struggled but showed improvement on their 2016 campaign and gained valuable experience against some very polished sides.

The Finals

The women’s final pitted the 1st placed Paris Cockerelles against the 4th placed Port Malmo Lynx in the first semi-final. The Cockerelles were expected to go through after defeating the Lynx in the group stages. The Lynx had other plans with an 11-point win catapulting them through to the final.

The second semi-final had an in-form Odense Lionesses against an out-of-sorts Wimbledon, however, the Hawks showed their class and lifted when it counted to convincingly beat the Lionesses by 20-points.

The evenness of the women’s competition showed with the 3rd and 4th placed teams playing off for the Champions League title. It was an incredible game with the Hawks lifting a notch in the big game. They controlled the game and held out to win by 7-points claiming their first Champions League title and becoming the first women’s club champions of Europe.

The men’s finals were always going to be a great spectacle with Group A’s Leeside Lions taking on Group D’s Amsterdam Devils in the first semi-final. The Devils lifted in front of their home crowd and held on to a hard-fought 27-19 victory in a fiery encounter to progress to their first Champions League final in their third attempt.

The second semi-final saw a rematch of last year’s final with Group B’s West London Wildcats taking on Group C’s Manchester Mozzies. The Wildcats flexed their muscles and proved too strong for the Mozzies with the scoreboard reading 65 to 18.

The Wildcats were through to yet another Champions League decider with an underdog Amsterdam Devils hoping to pull off the unthinkable. The Wildcats jumped out to an early lead to going into half-time with a 15-point buffer, inaccuracy hurting them and keeping the Devils in the game. A quick goal to start the second half got the Devils within range and when they kicked the 2nd goal of the half with 5 to go they were a real chance.

Two quick goals in response sealed the game for West London with a third goal late putting the icing on the cake to claim their third straight Champions League title with the scoreboard reading 37 to 14.

A special mention to the squad of 16 umpires who officiated throughout the day. Another stellar effort from the third team and congratulations on a great day of umpiring.

A massive thank you goes out to AFL Netherlands for their superb efforts in making this great event happen again in 2017, Spark United & Sportpark de Eendracht for hosting us, all the volunteers and pitch managers who work so hard throughout the day, the umpiring squad led by John Enright who assembled the biggest group of umpires to any AFL Europe tournament, the team managers and everyone who attend the 2017 edition of the Champions League. You all represented your leagues proudly. Good luck with your 2017 seasons!

FOOTY AROUND THE WORLD: Canada

0
0

The following story originally appeared on Frederick's Blog and the original article can be found here.

Aussie rules has developed rapidly in the country of Canada in the past decade or so, buoyed by a wave of Aussie ex-pats who live and work in the large cities of Vancouver, Toronto, and Ottawa, among others. There are several leagues currently operating, most notably in Ontario, Alberta, Quebec, and British Columbia.

The AFL brought the game to Canada officially in the late 1980s, when exhibition matches were held in both Vancouver and Toronto. In fact, the 1987 Vancouver-based match between Sydney Swans and the Melbourne Demons drew a record crowd of over 32,000 – which, to this day, is the largest crowd ever to see a footy match outside of Australia.

Like in the US, many Canadians were first introduced to Aussie rules during the 80s, when ESPN hosted regional broadcasts of AFL games. The first Canadian league was established in Toronto in May 1989, with two teams, the Toronto Panthers and the Mississauga Mustangs. Four other teams had joined by 1992, and by 1993, the Canadian national team, the Northwind, was born.

842dfaf7404482bb66854f22a846_Content

Almost immediately, the Northwind experienced success, beating a British representative team in only their second year of existence. In 1995, a cable TV station in Hamilton, Ontario, broadcast a local footy game for the first time, and in 1999, the Canadians played the Americans in the first edition of the 49th Parallel Cup.

The Northwind have competed in every edition of the Australian Football International Cup, starting in 2002. The women’s team, known as the Northern Lights, first played their edition of the 49th Parallel Cup in 2007 and have also competed at the International Cup, starting in 2011.

In 2012, the AFL got even more recognition up north when former Canadian rugby union player Mike Pyke won an AFL premiership with the Sydney Swans. This, perhaps more than anything, signified the birth of Aussie rules in Canada as both a major competitive enterprise and an exciting spectator sport.

At the junior level, there have been organized footy competitions since 2003, when the North Delta Junior Australian Football League was founded in British Columbia. The sport of footy continues to grow in Canada, aided by the AFL’s push to add more development officers and coaches in North America. Today, there are 825 registered players, including 300 youngsters in various junior leagues, making Aussie rules one of the fastest-growing sports in Canada.

CANADIANS IN THE AFL
  • Mike Pyke (played 2009-2015) – A British Columbia native who played numerous sports as a kid, Pyke played professional rugby union in both Canada and in Scotland. After injuries stalled his career, Pyke surprised many when he decided to switch to Aussie rules based on a friend’s recommendation. He caught on as a ruckman with the Sydney Swans and slowly managed to carve out a role for himself, drawing praise from coaches and teammates alike. In 2012, Pyke made history as the first Canadian to win an AFL premiership. Now a dual citizen of Canada and Australia, Pyke retired from the AFL in 2015 and currently works as an investment banker.
  • Andrew McGrath (played 2017-present) – Born in Ontario, McGrath moved to Melbourne with his family at the age of five. A long-armed, polished defender, McGrath was drafted as the #1 pick in the 2016 AFL Draft by the Essendon Bombers. As a junior, McGrath played for the Vic Metro squad in under-18 footy while attending Brighton Grammar School. He was also a gifted track and field athlete.
  • Scott Fleming (played 2008-present) – A lanky 6’3″ forward, Fleming started playing Aussie rules as a teenager in British Columbia and moved to Queensland in 2008 to pursue his goal. Helped by Canadian footy liaison Greg Everett, Fleming found a place at the Broadbeach Cats, a historic club in the Queensland Australian Football League (QAFL) that has also produced AFL players such as Joel Wilkinson and Dayne Zorko.
