First Vietnamese captain of Vietnam Swans on tour in China

Along with the debut of an AFL regular season match in China - there is also a lot of grass roots Asian footy going on to take advantage of this match as a chance to get together. The AFL Asia Shanghai Cup conducted yesterday - Saturday May 13th - took place at the Wellington College International Shanghai. Many of the players competing Saturday will likely attend the Port v Gold Coast clash today. One of the competing sides is the Vietnam Swans. And while for many people there is a view of expats dominating AFL in Asia - the Swans are among the growing band of footy outposts that are working at developing local footballers; and for the first time the Swans were captained by a Vietnamese local in Nguyen Quang Vinh.

Swans stalwart Shane Macfarlane reports "We're very proud of our local player development with 6-7 local Vietnamese players regularly playing & touring (at our own cost - we subsidise all local players) with our senior team." The Swans with regular captain Bill Crang unable to attend - named Nguyen Quang Vinh as the acting Captain of the Swans for the tournament - the first local Vietnamese player ever to Captain the The Vietnam Swans.

"Vinh has amazing passion for the game, shows great leadership on and off the field and has picked up all of the required skills (perhaps thanks to his rugby background) incredibly fast and is a well deserved recipient of this honour."

More can be read on Vinh's story Swans Cap First Vietnamese AFL Captain – Nguyen Quang Vinh.

For the record congratulations go to 2017 Shanghai Cup winners Shanghai Tigers Australian Rules Football Club who defeated the Singapore Wombats in the Open Final, and the Malaysian Warriors Masters got up over the The Slugs in the Masters division. ...

Power dominate Suns in historic Shanghai clash

It has been a big build up in the football media all week to this historic match in China for Premiership points. Early in the week much of the media seemed negative, possibly because of Rodney Eade’s post-match comments last week when asked about the game.

As the week has gone on though the sentiment has gradually turned supportive of the match and the acceptance that the potential that China offers should be given a go.

Unlike previous matches in Wellington, this overseas match was shown on free to air TV in Australia and late in the week the deal was secured for the match to be shown live in China on various networks (with Mandarin language commentary).

The Chinese and Australian national anthems were played pre-match and ‘Never Tear Us Apart’ the Port Adelaide pre-match anthem had a run also.

The ground condition looked fantastic and had the thumbs up from players and commentators. The air looked clean with no visible signs of serious pollution haze. This may have been assisted by a moderate breeze that was blowing across the ground.

The conditions were described as “Gold Coast in March” by commentator Leigh Mathews saying it was quite warm but not oppressive. Players did not at any stage seem distressed by the temperature with only a little fatigue that is not unusual late in the game saw some lazy looking kicking.

The match was officially a sell-out, nominally that means 10,000 (1,500 sold locally). Looking around the ground some terraced areas looked empty but it is hard to know if these are meant to have spectators seat in them or not. There are large areas of marquees outside the ground and some empty areas. The final official attendance was announced as 10,118.

As the game started nothing looked out of place, if anything the historic stadium made for a picturesque background. The ground itself is a little narrower than usual Aussie rules stadiums, most noticeable in the pockets but otherwise plenty of room for a footy match.

The Gold Coast Suns in the Chinese national colors of red and gold kicked the first goal through Barlow after a scramble on the goal line and a review of goal umpire Chelsea Roffey’s decision. Her call was upheld when the review went back to umpire’s call.

But it was Port that went on to dominate the quarter with goals to Charlie Dixon, Robbie Gray, Amon and Pollock. The Suns set big Stephen May to run with the dangerous Robbie Gray.

Dixon was starting to look like a favoured target up forward. Port dominating contested possession and stoppages. Brad Ebert the best for Port around the ground and Paddy Ryder dominating the ruck. Gold Coast star Gary Ablett had not been able to get the ball in space enough to be damaging.

Robbie Gray started the second quarter well roving the pack from throw in, in the forward pocket and snapping a major score. Travis Boak snapped a goal from 35 after contest near the top of the 50 as the Power were more often able to maintain ball possession in transition.  Impey kicked his first for the Port as they started to really pull away from the Suns.

Westhoff snapped a brilliant goal out of the air on the boundary from a very tight angle and bounced it through for the seventh consecutive goal for Port Adelaide.

Late in the second quarter the Suns cleared quickly from the ball up to a mark by Jarryd Lyons inside 50, he sat his kick into the breeze for the goal.
Further goals to Jackson Trengrove and Jarman Impey (kicking his second) however meant that the half time differential was a fair reflection on a half dominated by Port Adelaide.

Jesse Joyce improved that to 42 points when he ended the half with a goal to the Suns. Really only Jarryd Harbrow for the Suns could be said to be among the better players on the ground.

The Gold Coast tried to stem the blood loss in third quarter. It was 6 behinds and fifteen minutes before the first goal was scored by Ah Chee for Port Adelaide. Dixon quickly added another soccering out of the air running back into the square just a few metres out from the goal straight in front and then giving off another to Ah Chee who slotted it for Port from the pocket.

A 55-point lead to Port Adelaide looked insurmountable.

The final quarter offered little more for the suns. Bad kicking when they did get it forward, let them down. Port Adelaide added further pain with Travis Boak goalling in the first minute and Brendon Ah Chee adding the only other goal for the quarter. A number of misses from Port Adelaide who did look a little tired in the last 10 minutes made the game seem to be just rolling to a stop before Robbie Gray kicked the final goal with 2 minutes left on the clock.

In the end a massive 72-point win to Port Adelaide. Brad Ebert from Port Adelaide won the Best on Ground medal and Port Adelaide took home the cup created for this clash.  The number 4 may be considered unlucky in China but Port Adelaide will be happy with their 4 points.

From a football point of view a great result for the club that made this game happen. As for the financial, promotional, and developmental benefits to both clubs, the sponsors and the AFL that remains to be seen but a thorough analysis will no doubt be undertaken in the coming days.

In my opinion the game looked good on TV back in Australia and the disaster scenarios being played out in some media in the past weeks failed to materialise. I think this match will be back again next season, most likely with the same two clubs and perhaps with the Gold Coast in their away kit. If extra seating can be added to the stadium another 3-5000 with some temporary extra stands could help the atmosphere and the visual spectacle.

Both teams now have next week off. Port Adelaide are now into the top four and the Gold Coast Suns continue to fail to live up to their potential falling to 12th on the ladder.

An international Auskicker announced as the eighth NAB AFL Auskicker of the Year Weekly Nominee

Zac Stewart from the Singapore Sharks Football Club has been announced as the eighth weekly nominee for the 2017 NAB AFL Auskicker of the Year competition.

To coincide with the Round 8 Toyota AFL Premiership Season match in Shanghai between the Gold Coast SUNS and Port Adelaide Football Club, Power fan Zac was announced during an interview with the Seven Network’s Hamish McLachlan in China.

The NAB AFL Auskicker of the Year competition calls for 2017 registered participants of the program, both in Australia and internationally, to enter for the chance to become one of 22 weekly nominees.

Zac, nine, submitted a passionate entry to secure his NAB AFL Auskicker of the Year nomination and played at half time of today’s match at Jiangwan Stadium.

With Chad Wingard as his favourite player, Zac spoke about the excitement leading into this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

“I love playing Auskick at the Singapore Sharks and it’s so exciting to get the opportunity to play at half-time at the match in Shanghai.

“I can’t believe I’m now an Auskicker of the Year nominee and I’ll travel to Melbourne in September to be part of Grand Final week. I’m hoping Port make it all the way,” he said.

Zac will join 21 other lucky NAB AFL Auskicker weekly nominees in Melbourne for an unforgettable experience that will include walking in the parade, playing on the hallowed turf of the MCG at half-time and present an AFL Premiership player with his medal on Grand Final Day.

It only gets better for Zac, he now has the chance to be crowned the overall NAB AFL Auskicker of the Year which will be announced at an awards dinner in Melbourne during Grand Final Week.

The lucky 2017 NAB AFL Auskicker of the Year winner will receive $5,000 in a NAB Reward Saver Account and Geelong Football Club captain Joel Selwood as their personal footy mentor for 2018.

To join Zac and be in the running to win this incredible experience, parents and guardians can enter their 2017 registered NAB AFL Auskick participant into the NAB AFL Auskicker of the Year competition by uploading a short video featuring their Auskicker in action at home or in the backyard; kicking goals, commentating or taking a speccy.

In the video entry, Auskickers should also explain why they think they should be the 2017 NAB AFL Auskicker of the Year.

To enter the competition, parents and guardians of 2017 registered NAB AFL Auskick participants should visit nab.com.au/auskick (competition closes on Thursday 3rd August. AFL Authorisation Code: GFAFL 17/10).

About NAB AFL Auskick:

Koalas Take Gagarin Cup In Russia

April 12th is a national day in Russia. It is called Cosmonautics Day and celebrates the anniversary of Russian cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin, who was the first man into space, circling the Earth for almost two hours on April 12th 1961.

As a major day of Russian celebration, AFL Russia has for many years played either a match or tournament, under the banner of the Gagarin Cup, as a major Australian Rules football event in Moscow.

In recent years the event has become a part of the overall Russian football season where the two major national teams – the Lazy Koalas from Moscow and the St Petersburg – play each other for the honour of the Gagarin Cup.

The two clubs have become much closer in standard now, with both capable of beating the other, especially with home ground advantage kicking in. This year was no different as both teams lined up against each other again on April 16th for the next chapter in the Russian inter-city rivalry.

It is no simple event, with the St Petersburg Cats travelling around 700 kilometres to Moscow for the game – that is roughly the same as Melbourne to Adelaide a a little more than Los Angeles to San Francisco.

But once there the two teams turned on a tough, uncompromising battle, with the Koalas running out victors by just 19 points – winning 64 to 45 against the constantly improving Cats. For now, the Lazy Koalas have kept the Gagarin Cup safe in Moscow, but the two teams between them have done Australian Rules football proud again in Russia.

As Russia heads into its warmer months, more football will be played, with the next instalment of the intra-national rivalry to likely be played in St Petersbur ...

Santiago Saints To Host Bogota Bulldogs In Next Andes Cup

After the inaugural clash between the Santiago Saints and Bogota Bulldogs held in Colombia last September, the teams have been itching for another chance to clash. Last time, playing in The Andes Cup, it was the new kids on the block, the Bogota Bulldogs, that took the honours, downing the Santiago Saints by 46 points. See story Bogotá Bulldogs Down Santiago Saints In Colombia.

On July 22nd the second instalment of this South American footy rivalry gets under way when the Chilean based Saints host the Bulldogs. It will be an enormous boost to the game in Chile. The Santiago Saints have lived in a semi-hiatus for many years, unable to play much more than internal scratch matches due to the lack of another team on the continent.

However, the creation of the Bogota Bulldogs in Colombia sees a permanent playing option. The Saints can promote the game heavily and hope to attract new players and supporters and maybe even attract interested kids to come along and grow a footy culture for the future.

The Bulldogs also stand to benefit greatly from the event, and their Facebook page reports that:

“The Bogota Bulldogs will make our first trip down south to Chile and play our South American rivals the Santiago Saints on the 22nd of July 2017. This again will be a historic first for Aussie Rules football in South America. The aim of both teams is to develop the greatest game on earth within the South American region. We already have a great squad heading south and want to extend an open invitation to all players, supporters and interested people to be involved. We want your support and backing to continue kicking goals for Aussie Rules football in South America.”

Already the rivalry is developing. The Bulldogs are determined to head south to Santiago and retain the honours they gained last year. For the Saints, they are keen on revenge, especially in front of their home crowd. They will be playing out of their skins to claim a victory, especially after years of waiting for such opportunities.

Earlier this year, the Saints put out the invitation for clubs from across the world – particularly North America and Europe – to consider visiting Chile for pre-season matches or just social events. See story South American Football On The March This match will certainly add to the attraction for potential visiting clubs, as well as attracting more local interest and give rise to another national team – perhaps Brazil, Argentina…? Blagnac Aviators Claim First Title – Coupe Du Sud

The Blagnac Aviators are the newest Australian Rules football club in France, playing their first CNFA season across 2016/17. They performed creditably, winning two matches and avoiding the wooden spoon in their maiden season. But now they have gone a step further, taking out the 2017 Coupe Du Sud (Cup of the South) in a tri-series against both the Toulouse Hawks and Bordeaux Bombers.

On top of that effort, the Aviators managed to go through the tournament at the Stade Sordelo in Toulouse undefeated across their matches to be thoroughly deserving victors. Playing in the final against their Toulouse siblings – the Hawks – Blagnac were comprehensive, downing their rivals by 26 points (Aviators 35 d Hawks 9).

It is a huge result for the Blagnac Aviators to claim their first title after just one completed season of football, and the ideal platform from which to launch their 2017/18 season later this year.

Results:
Blagnac Aviators 39 d Bordeaux Bombers 9
Toulouse Hawks 50 d Bordeaux Bombers 40
Blagnac Aviators 44 d Toulouse Hawks 21
Blagnac Aviators 28 d Toulouse Hawks 17
Blagnac Aviators 46 d Bordeaux Bombers 34
Toulouse Hawks 45 d Bordeaux Bombers 36

Final :
Blagnac Aviators 35 d Toulouse Hawks 9

The result continues a changing of the guard in French football after the league’s newest clubs have taken out significant honours over the past two seasons. The ALFA Lions won the 2016/17 premiership after the Paris Cockatoos took the title in 2015/16. Now the Blagnac Aviators have their own important piece of history – something they can now build on for the futur ...

AFL players in support of marriage equality

Footballers representing every AFL and AFLW team have signed a petition in support of same-sex marriage to mark May 17’s International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT).

In partnership with the Equality Campaign, AFL players are calling on footy fans to join them in pledging support for a change to Australian marriage laws.

CLICK HERE TO WATCH AFL and AFLW PLAYERS SHARE THEIR REASONS FOR SIGNING THE PETITION

Dyson Heppell, the Essendon captain, is proud to be an AFL player lending his voice to promote a fair and equal society for all Australians.

“It’s great to see players put their signature on the petition and hopefully our support can play some role in creating a more inclusive Australia. No matter who you are or who you love, we should all have equal rights to marriage," he said.

The AFL Players’ Association has been a signatory to Australian Marriage Equality since 2016 and has supported IDAHOBIT for the past six years.

AFLPA CEO Paul Marsh says the motivation behind this year’s IDAHOBIT came from the players' desire to build on the awareness generated through their involvement with the campaign.

“The players stand for an inclusive community that doesn’t discriminate on any level, whether it be because of sexuality, race, gender or religion,” Marsh said.

“We’re proud that so many players have put their name to this petition in the hope that their voices help build momentum for marriage equality.

"Marriage is about love and commitment, and it should be available to every Australian. It’s a basic human right – everyone has a right to be treated equally. Quite frankly, I'm embarrassed to live in a country where people are discriminated against for who they love."

The Equality Campaign Executive Director Tiernan Brady said, “The majority of Australians and the majority of MPs support marriage equality. It takes from no one but ensures every Australian is afforded the same dignity and respect. No one will be less married or more gay with civil marriage equality.

“Our national campaign will continue to reflect the will of the Australian people. Our campaign is not going away until our parliament does its job and passes marriage equality.”

This year's IDAHOBIT campaign is part of the AFL Players Care program – the players’ official social responsibility program.

The Equality Campaign is a joint initiative by Australians for Equality (A4E) and Australian Marriage Equality (AME) to achieve a successful parliamentary vote for marriage equality so every Australian is treated equally under the law.

To sign the petition and put your support behind marriage equality, go to equalitycampaign.org.au/equalitynow.

IDAHOBIT was created in 2004 to raise awareness of the violence and discrimination experienced by LGBTIQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer) people internationally. May 17 is significant as commemorates the date in 1990 that the World Health Organisation made the decision to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder. ...

Scorpions & Thunder In Tight Tussle – AFLCNE

The Nottingham Scorpions have held a determined Sheffield Thunder at bay over the weekend, keeping them at arm’s length to record a 19-point victory. The Thunder crew are pragmatic enough to realise that on paper it was another loss, but can see the improvement in their side after a tough, hard contest. Nottingham remain in second place on the ladder, whilst Thunder have consecutive matches against the Tigers and Saints to possibly build a winning streak.

In other matches, big margins were the order of the day. The Manchester Mozzies gave the Huddersfield Rams a football lesson, recording a 190-point victory – their third huge margin in three games so far. For the Rams, the result will be a kick into action. They have started the season well enough – going down to the Scorpions by less than five goals before downing the Thunder – but now they have a chance to recalibrate again before their next clash. The Mozzies sit comfortably atop the ladder.

The Wolverhampton Wolverines unleashed their fury on the Merseyside Saints, galloping to a massive 251-point win. The Wolverines are certainly a strong unit, having recorded two 200-point plus wins from their two matches. The Saints are still developing and will not pay much attention to the scoreboard, other than use it as a marker to their next goal.

The Tyne Tees Tigers had the bye.

Euro Cup Returns To Bordeaux For 2017

The French city of Bordeaux has been granted the hosting rights for the 2017 Euro Cup. The city last hosted the event in 2013 when Saint-Médard-en-Jalles stadium became the centre of the European Australian Rules football universe. On that occasion, England took the men’s title with a resounding 77 point victory over the French hosts whilst the European Crusaders women’s team downed France by 19 points. This year, the French will be keen to turn one of those defeats into a maiden title.

AFL Europe will be quietly confident that last year’s record amount of teams at a Euro Cup will be broken. Across the men’s and women’s competitions in Umag, Croatia, 22 teams competed. With the continued growth of women’s football, and a useful geographic location within Europe, Bordeaux might yet host the biggest event in the cup’s history in terms of teams.

It is no coincidence that the game in France has grown since 2013. New clubs in the ALFA Lions, Paris Cockatoos and Blagnac Aviators have become a part of the CNFA’s national competition since the Bordeaux tournament, along with other clubs such as the Lille Eagles continuing to develop towards competitive status. Once again, the game in France is sure to develop and benefit from hosting, especially as they will have hosted twice within five years.

Further details will be released by AFL Europe over coming weeks. To keep up to date with these details, visit the AFL Europe website at: http://www.afleurope.org/

It was a happy day for the London Swans as they held on in a thriller to defeat the South East London Giants by just seven points. The Cocks went through the tournament undefeated, whilst the ALFA Lions and Cergy Pontoise Coyotes nabbed a win each against each other across the three-team round robin draw. The scores from the matches were:

Kingdom Kangaroos Break New Ground – AFL Scotland

In their Round Four match last weekend, the Kingdom Kangaroos won a landmark match for the club when they defeated the Edinburgh Bloods. Since joining the SARFL competition back in 2013 the Kangaroos had managed to jump many hurdles along their journey – but beating the bloods wasn’t one of them.

But after a solid four quarter effort, the Kangaroos prevailed, downing the Bloods by a resounding 45 points – 96 to 51. It marks an historic milestone for the Kingdom Kangaroos as they now know they are capable of beating any other team in the competition. Their win at Beveridge Park, Kirkcaldy, also sets them up well in the race for this year’s SARFL finals.

Last weekend, in the Round Three clash, the Greater Glasgow Giants outlasted a gallant Glasgow Sharks in a replay of last season’s grand final. For the second consecutive round, the result was decided by less than a goal (the Bloods downed the Sharks by two points in a thriller in Round Two).

After another tightly fought contest, the Giants held on to record a 9 12 66 to 8 15 63 victory, downing their Glasgow rivals the Sharks by just three points at the GHA Rugby Club fields in Glasgow. It was a heartbreaking result for the Sharks, going down by less than a goal in consecutive matches.

The Round Five clash will see the Greater Glasgow Giants take on the Glasgow Sharks on June 3rd, followed by the Edinburgh Bloods hosting the Kingdom Kangaroos on June 10th. ...

It’s Just Not Cricket - AFLCNE Round Four

$
0
0

In a refreshing change for the AFLCNE competition, last weekend’s round of matches did not have the lopsided cricket score-like results which have been the norm since Round One. Instead, the two matches played saw two competitive hit-outs. Whilst both results were still resounding, there wasn’t the same one-sided nature involved.

A case in point is the clash between the Tyne Tees Tigers and the Sheffield Thunder. Whilst the Tigers would no doubt be delighted with their first win of the season – an 80-point victory – the score-lines show that they didn’t have things completely their own way. The final score of Tyne Tees Tigers 27 19 181 to Sheffield Thunder 13 23 101 was big in margin, but different when viewed by scoring shots. In the end, the Tigers’ accuracy helped them as they recorded 46 scoring shots to Thunder’s 36. The ball would have been fairly whizzing from end to end all day.

In the end, the Tigers claimed a comfortable win and are on their way after a stuttering start. Thunder have been honest to date in all matches and a win cannot be far away.

The Merseyside Saints hosted last year’s grand finalist, the Nottingham Scorpions. After the bye in Round One, the Saints were on the receiving end of two horrid scorelines – 36 goals followed by 41 – and a clash against last season’s grand finalists would have looked ominous on face value. However, the Saints threw everything they had at the Nottingham Scorpions and went down by just 66 points, keeping the Scorpions to just 14 goals for the day…a great defensive effort backed up by four Saint goals. Final scores saw the Merseyside Saints 4 6 30 down to the Nottingham Scorpions 14 12 96. The Saints can now believe that their ability is far, far better than their previous match results indicate.

The match between the Wolverhampton Wolverines and Huddersfield Rams saw a forfeit result in favour of the Wolverines, meaning they along with the Scorpions and Mozzies are undefeated so far this season. Decorated athlete Erin Phillips has re-committed to the Crows for the 2018 AFL Women’s Competition (more below).

Today's announcement comes days after Phillips attended the USAFL match between the Austin Crows and the Houston Lonestars in Allen, Texas.  It appears that a Twitter invitation to Phillips from the USAFL national champions the Austin Crows ( @austincrows ) lured the Dallas based star out to the game.

For the record the Austin Crows 4.1 (25) defeated the Houston Lonestars 2.8 (20).

Phillips made a remarkable return to football for the inaugural season of the AFLW this year after a 17-year absence from the game.

The 32-year-old claimed the AFLW Best and Fairest, All Australian selection and Goal of the Year as well as the Crows Club Champion and the Players Association’s Players’ Most Valuable Player.

The Crows co-captain was also voted best on ground in Adelaide’s historic Grand Final win over Brisbane.

Phillips has made a commitment which will see her line-up for the Crows in the second season of the AFLW, while also undertaking off-field marketing and commercial activities to promote the game for the Club and the League.

Also a celebrated international basketballer, Phillips last week announced her retirement from the WNBA after nine years and two titles. The two-time Olympian has claimed a world championship gold medal and an Olympic silver medal with the Australian Opals.

Phillips said she was thrilled to be able to re-commit to the Crows to continue her career in football.

“Last season was truly a dream come true, so to be able to stay at Adelaide is fantastic. I couldn’t imagine playing with any other team,” Phillips said.

“Having grown up in a sporting family watching Dad play football it’s definitely always been something I wanted to do so I was extremely grateful to have that opportunity and I can’t wait to pull the boots on again.

“With my retirement from playing in the WNBA, I’m looking forward to giving my body a rest and spending time with my family in Dallas before returning to Australia refreshed and ready to take on the second season of the AFLW.

“Right from the outset, I was blown away by how professional and committed the Crows are to women’s football. It’s a really positive environment at the Club with a great playing group and that’s certainly something I am looking forward to continuing to be a part of.”

Crows CEO Andrew Fagan said Phillips’ re-signing was a huge coup for the Club and the wider competition.

“We are delighted to have Erin re-sign with us,” Fagan said.

“During her first season she had an immense impact on the competition, both on and off the field.

“She’s a fantastic leader who brings years of experience as a professional athlete at the highest level.

“Erin’s had an incredibly positive influence on our Club in a short time and we look forward to seeing what she can do next season.”

Phillips, who has been appointed Director of Player and Franchise Development with the Dallas Wings, will remain in Dallas with her family until November when she will return to Adelaide to commence pre-season training and take on the role of High Performance Coach with the AFL.

She joins fellow All Australians Chelsea Randall and Sarah Perkins who have also re-committed to the Crows for AFLW 2018.

The AFLW player signing and trade period runs until Friday, May 26. The Crows will announce more player re-signings before the end of the week.

“Dreamtime By The Sea” – Indigenous Round In Far North Queensland

The glittering northern sun shone down over Holloways Beach – a northern suburb of Cairns – as the footy community descended on the oval for the annual “Dreamtime By The Sea” match. Played as a part of the nationally recognised Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous Round, local club Cairns City Lions hosts the North Cairns Tigers – two Cairns clubs with strong indigenous connections.

Even the wind offered a conciliatory tone, blowing strongly across the ground to promote unity – both clubs will be united by having no wind advantage!

After a Youth Girls clash between the Lions and Tigers, a Senior Women’s match between the Manunda Hawks and North Cairns Tigers, and a reserve Grade curtain-raiser between Pyramid Power and the Tigers, the teams came together for the acknowledgement of country and a stirring didgeridoo performance by locally renowned musician Gary “Creeky” Creek. Then, the battle was on.

As the Cairns City Lions and North Cairns Tigers went to work honouring the immense contribution of indigenous footballers, and by extension people and communities, to the game, Lions’ club vice-president Mick Taranto spoke of the value of the event to his club and the game.

“[We are] really looking forward to today’s game. [The game is] good for the culture, good for the indigenous people, good for locals and good for spectators. It is good overall.”

Mick agrees that the indigenous players rise to the occasion and states, “and with the non-indigenous players as well, they grown a foot taller and come out blazing. In 2017 this game is possibly more important as it builds a platform for our club’s future. We get together and bond. We have had many indigenous players at the club and they have helped bring the club together. As a club we strive for pride and respect for each other…that’s what makes this club bond.”

Toby Fatnowna is part of the leadership group at the Cairns City Lions. “It means a lot, not just for the club but for all indigenous players who are participating today, especially as we have great history of indigenous players that have paved that pathway for us.”

“This day is often seen as being about the Riolis and Franklins but it is so important that it is celebrated right down to the grass roots, and we want to aspire to be like them and maybe become the Riolis of the future like the players that have come through here like the Cockatoo-Collins. There is a sense of pride at this club and we are seen as the underdogs and write-offs but like I have done on the jumper I designed that I wear today, we are boomerangs – we come back. A day like today helps us go forward and we could turn a few heads today depending on how we perform but today means more than that. It’s deeper.”

Iaon Drake is the senior coach at North Cairns Tigers. He, too, has a strong sense of pride and power that resides within this event. “It’s an honour to play in a game like this, to celebrate our indigenous players, not just here in Cairns but all over Australia. I’m from Tasmania and we had indigenous players playing with us there, but to come up to Cairns and to see the culture here through the indigenous people and the islanders is amazing.”

“Both of our clubs have a strong indigenous background as well. Our captain is indigenous, one of our young club leaders is indigenous, so it’s really just part of the football culture in Cairns. I think they do rise to this occasion [the players], especially our indigenous boys. This is their showpiece for the year. They really step up to the plate for this game – it’s very special for them, it’s their day of the year, and we help celebrate that as well.”

“It gives young players something to strive for, something to aim for to be a part of a game like this. To come from juniors, play reserves, play seniors and be a part of the dreamtime game. So it is important to educate our young people and give an opportunity to be a part of this game.”

“These boys are proud of where they come from and their heritage. It is really important to have these days and celebrate with them. It means a lot to them, it’s basically like a grand final for these boys.”

Travis Thorne, captain of North Cairns Tigers, agrees with his coach. “Yeah, it is a special day. There’s not many days you can celebrate your heritage and your culture. Both clubs take this day by the scruff of the neck. It is a good concept and hopefully it grows every year. These boys are front and centre for the day and for the week and we try to talk the occasion up a bit.”

“Some of the boys get pumped and step and show their talent. We are fortunate enough to play two great games a year – ANZAC Day and Dreamtime – and we can try to recruit by selling those things about playing for our heritage and our culture.”

This year for the first time, Gordonvale-based club, Pyramid Power, we able to be a part of the day. With a playing group at the club which is over 90% indigenous across juniors and seniors, the day offers a great chance for the club to be a part of something truly special. Club president Jim Floyd admits that “it is a special day to be involved with this – fantastic weather, fantastic day to be involved with the Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous Round. To have Lions and Tigers involved we have a good cross-section of the indigenous players involved up here. It’s terrific.”

“The indigenous boys come together like brothers and for us it’s a drawcard to have those boys involved in our team and they get more and more involved which is fantastic. One idea we have had for a while for Pyramid Power as part of the Indigenous Round is to have a local carnival and get clubs and teams from across the country to come and join in.”

Pyramid Power player, Clinton Sullivan, was happy to consider specific skills that indigenous players bring to the game. “[We are] bringing in our speed, our stepping skills our handling, pretty much everything – I picked up the game pretty quickly and I think any indigenous player would pick it up because it’s in their blood.

When asked if one day the league will hear of the Sullivans like we do the Riolis and Franklins, Clinton said “Yeah, one day. Don’t worry about that!”

Perhaps, fittingly, the final word rests with Tommy Mooka. He has played this “Dreamtime By The Sea” match for all three clubs. Originally with North Cairns Tiers and then Cairns City Lions, Tommy is now an on-field mentor for the young Power team.

“[This game] means a lot to us because it’s the only match that we [indigenous players] get recognised in. AFL Cairns made something for us, I’m not too sure who made it but I’ve played in four of the last five…this is my fifth one. “Dreamtime By The Sea” is important for us because before any kind of Christianity or other religions our ancestors were always there, dreamtime was always there. It’s a big part of all the artists out there and their designs out there and we want everyone to have a good day.”

“I feel a bit bigger on the day because it’s a day that is for us and we shouldn’t be flat on that day, we should be out there giving it our all.”

“It doesn’t matter what colours we are, where we come from, what is our background - on the day if you are part of the team and pulling on that indigenous jumper you are just as equal as everyone else. So it’s great that the non-indigenous participate in our indigenous day. Same with our supporters – we wouldn’t have a day without them.”

When asked if the addition of Pyramid Power to the day is good for the future even though it is Lions/Tigers day, Tommy says, “Yeah, a new team, a new indigenous team would be great to see them in their own little competition – “Dreamtime By The Pyramid”. Maybe speak to the elders and get the story of Djarragun, yeah it would be deadly…it would be good to see Pyramid Power in a competition like this on this day.”

But his final line really sums up the day in very simple language. “My goal for today is to get out there give it my all, represent where I come from and play footy with my friends and kick a few goals.”

A great way to summarise the “Dreamtime By The Sea” match, and maybe symbolic of similar matches played around the country as part of the AFL’s Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous Round.

At least four nations headed for Ballarat Schools Round

$

As revealed in January, Melbourne (and surrounding) schools have been in talks to host an International Cup match in August.  This will happen in the second round of the tournament, known as the 'Schools Round' on August 9th.

The Ballarat Courier has today confirmed that two Ballarat schools will be hosting International Cup matches.  The following is from that article.

Mount Clear College and St Patrick’s College have been successful in their respective bids, which will see matches played in the city as part of the series during August.

AFL’s head of community and international development Grant Williams said for the first time in 2017, the carnival will include a school round, where matches will be played at venues across Victoria.

“We’re excited about the opportunity this presents for both the competing countries and the host schools to share more about their respective cultural backgrounds,” Williams said.

While fixtures for the 2017 championships are yet to be confirmed, Mount Clear College’s sports director Cameron Dole said the school was hoping to host two games and had requested a men’s match between China and Japan because of its strong connection to those countries through intern students and language classes.

Meanwhile, St Patrick’s College director of community development Paul Nolan said the school would be happy to host any of the competing nations, but would like a game involving Ireland given its strong association with the country.

Depending on the final numbers of teams that can make the trip to Melbourne there could be up to 13 games in total in the round, to be played across a number of schools.  The AFL has had a big response to the idea with a surplus of schools having put up their hand to host a match.

International Cup teams in the past have visited local schools between match days with great positive feedback from the teams as well as the schools on the visits.

IC17 looks to take this further with the students not only interacting with the teams but also hosting an International Cup round match. Some schools are hoping to host select countries that fit for example with their language programs.  The final schedule is yet to be finalised as the AFL seeks to confirm attendance of all nations.

Ballarat previously hosted the International Cup match between China and Finland in 2014 at Eureka Stadium where China 3.8 (26) were four point winners over Finland 3.4 (22).

We hope to have more information on the confirmed teams, schedules and formats in the coming weeks.
