The Art Of Being Champions

$

One of the hallmarks of a great dynasty is to understand that change is inevitable and be able to absorb change and continue forward. It is what has powered great nations and cultures over time and a similar process occurs in sport.

The Dubai Dragons – winner of five out of the past six AFL Middle east premierships – is in that position now. They may be at the end of their great reign, or they may be on a solid plateau set for another year of greatness. Time will tell, but one thing that is certain is they have embraced change over this past off-season. How they respond will determine whether the new season brings more glory or the start of a new phase of rebuilding.

The club is acutely aware of this and is addressing needs. Iain Rowe, president of the Dubai Dragons, offers his insight.

“The Dragons have had a great off season and celebrated with another mystery international end of season trip. [We]have had a few retirements from some long-serving players and it's been a challenge to replace such talent, however, after a good recruiting season over the break, the Dragons will be bringing some young blood back into the squad.”

“The team has been training well over the past two months and are ready for the season ahead. We know we are 'the hunted' team once again, however, we are not in unfamiliar territory. We are ready for all of the challenges the competition throws at us. Bring on the 2017-18 season!”

They are ready. Or, at least, as ready as they can be for the challenges of the new season. The Dragons are aware that their cross-town rivals – the Multiplex Bulls and Dubai Dingoes – are out to bring them down. They also know that the Abu Dhabi Falcons are building. They also have an eye to the development of other past and present teams as the AFL Middle East competition once again changes according to the regional political, economic and social climates.

Iain says “the Dragons hope Doha, Muscat and Bahrain can bolster their teams and get more involved in the AFLME competition in the current climate. Good luck to all teams this season.”

Clearly the Dragons start favourites, but with the season kicking of tomorrow (Bulls v Dingoes) – the Dragons meet the Falcons in Dubai on Friday – there is no waiting. New season patterns will emerge as early as tomorrow. Some questions will be answered immediately – others will take longer. That is the art of being champions.

But one thing is certain – the Dubai Dragons will not fall victim to surprise. They have spent the off-season preparing for that change and Round One will tell them how well they have prepared. ...

Suns Strike Deal To Host AFL To Host Matches In Townsville And Cairns

Sarah Black has reported on the www.afl.com.au website that the Gold Coast Suns have ticked the boxes and locked in arrangements to continue playing matches in North Queensland for 2018 and hopefully beyond.

In her article, Sarah states that:

GOLD COAST will play home matches for premiership points in both Cairns and Townsville from 2018 onwards.

The deal was struck between the Suns and Tourism and Events Queensland, and will see the club play in Cairns next season, and Townsville in 2019 or 2020.

With the Suns' usual home ground Metricon Stadium out of action at the start of the season – possibly up to round 10 – due to the Commonwealth Games, Cairns could be an option to host a game in the first half of the year.

Cairns hosted a match between the Western Bulldogs and Suns in round 18 this year, while Townsville has only ever hosted pre-season clashes.

Gold Coast chairman Tony Cochrane told goldcoastfc.com.au it was a great opportunity for football fans in North Queensland to attend live matches.

"As a club, we have established significant support in Cairns and Townsville and enjoy playing our role in developing Australian Football throughout the region, which is also a key recruitment catchment for the Gold Coast Suns Talent Academy," he said.

"In the past, through community camps, pre-season games and AFL premiership fixtures, the Gold Coast Suns has and will continue to support the growth of AFL in North Queensland."

The AFL fixture is yet to be confirmed and is due to be announced in late October.

Cora Staunton AFLW – From Mayo To GWS Giants

The following article from the Irish Independent looks at the drafting of superstar women’s Gaelic footballer Cora Staunton by AFLW club the Greater Western Sydney Giants. Cora was taken with pick 45 in yesterday’s AFLW NAB AFL Women’s Draft. Not only is Cora’s selection a great personal success, it also opens wider the prospects of more Irish and other international players seeking to be drafted in coming years.

Mayo star Cora Staunton will feature in the AFLW in 2018.

She will be the first international athlete to be drafted to play in the league which gets underway in January after she joined the Greater Western Sydney Giants.

The 34-year-old flew out to Australia 48 hours ago to audition in front of head coach Alan McConnell and men’s assistant coach Nick Walsh, a former Cavan footballer.

Staunton made the decision to change codes after she had a conversation with Walsh at the 2016 FEXCO Asian Gaelic Games.

“It will be a huge challenge but us Irish love a challenge,” Staunton told the Herald Sun in Australia.

“I’ve never played AFL before and had my first practice at it with Alan and Nick this morning.

“Getting used to the ball will be the biggest thing, along with the rules of the game.”

McConnell said. “Cora Staunton is probably the surprise package of the selections in the draft,”

“Cora comes from an elite background in football in Ireland. She recently played in the All Ireland final at Croke Park in front of 46,000 people on the back end of that competition, unfortunately losing. She’s a goalkicking forward so we’re looking for her to bring some goalkicking power to our team as a deep forward.”

Staunton had been in contact with the club since July but her trip to Australia was delayed by Mayo's impressive run to the All-Ireland final and club commitments.

She flies home again on Saturday to play club championship with her club Carnachon and will make a decision on her Mayo future in March.

She told RTE Sport: ""It’s a very short season.

"I’ll move out once the club championship is over. I’m aiming to be out in the first week of December. It’s a seven-game series, if you get to the final it’s eight games.

"The first round starts at the end of January; it’s a run until the end of March. Once that’s over I’ll be home again.

"I’ve no decision made on retirement. I’m going to give hopefully the next six or seven weeks to the club (Carnachon) and try and do my best there, then come out and start life out here.

"It’ll buy me an extra couple of months before coming to a decision. I’ll see how the body is come March. I’m not ruling anything in or out at the moment.

"When the season is over here in March, God knows where it will take me. I'll see how I am. I won't be making any decision until the end of March or April when I come home."

Staunton has shown her sporting prowess in a variety of different codes throughout her career.

A four-time All-Ireland winner with Mayo, she has also won a FAI Women’s Cup winner’s medal with the Mayo Ladies League representative team in 2006 and played rugby in the Connacht Women’s League.

She follows in the footsteps of the likes of Kerry's Tadhg Kennelly and Melbourne legend Jim Stynes in making the move Down Under.

Former Cavan midfielder Laura Corrigan is already plying her trade in the ALFW with Melbourne.

Buffaloes Tame Saints – NTFL

$

The weekend’s matches in Darwin’s NTFL competition saw a closer set of results as the competition entered Round Two and the settling process of the new season kicked in further. There was plenty going on to maintain high inter4est with Saints losing their second straight match to start the season, the Tiwi Bombers penalised for an ineligible player, Wanderers downing rivals Waratah and Southern Districts Crocs too good for Palmerston.

The biggest news from the round came after all matches had been completed. The Tiwi Bombers fought hard to go down to the much-improved Nightcliff Tigers – the final scoreboard margin being just 16 points. The performance was heartening for Bombers’ supporters, but after a review of then weekend, Tiwi had fielded an ineligible player. Whilst they had lost anyway, the penalty was to award the result to Nightcliff as a forfeit and a 60-nil scoreline.

Last season’s premiers, St Mary’s, have had another rocky start to the season. After losing their first round match to Nightcliff, they had their worries compounded when the Darwin Buffaloes downed them by 14 points. Darwin are now undefeated after two rounds as are Wanderers, Crocs and Nightcliff.

Wanderers had a convincing win over Waratah by 40 points whilst Southern Districts downed Palmerston by the same margin.

Interestingly, after just two rounds there is already a two game gap between the top four and bottom four teams with four undefeated teams and four teams yet to record a win.

Scores:
Darwin Buffaloes 11 13 79 d St Mary’s Saints 9 11 65
Nightcliff Tigers 15 12 102 d Tiwi Bombers 13 8 86 (amended to read as forfeit 60-0 after penalty)
Southern Districts Crocs 16 15 11 d Palmerston Magpies 11 5 71
Wanderers Eagles 12 9 81 d Waratah Warriors 6 5 41

Next Round:
Nightcliff v Wanderers
Darwin v Tiwi Bombers
Palmerston v Waratah
Southern Districts v St Mary ...

The Little Engine That Could

They came from Gordonvale – a small sugar town to the south of Cairns. A town watched over by the mighty Walsh’s Pyramid and surrounded by the ubiquitous sugar cane that is the lifeblood of the town. Unlike most of the town, however, they play Australian Rules football – AFL to some.

We are talking about the Gordonvale Bombers – a team of 10-12 year old primary school girls who changed the course of their school’s sporting history in one glorious year of commitment, courage, talent and determination. They have firmly placed Gordonvale State School on the AFL map, and much more beyond.

Whilst their achievements are largely measured on their 2017 results, the truth is that these girls started to come together in 2016 when a small group of year five students joined the school footy team for some of their matches in the Queensland Schools Cup and a few other localised school games.

By 2017 they formed the nucleus of a team which would go on a journey not seen in any other team sport at Gordonvale State School in its history. First came their Queensland Schools Cup where they dominated all other teams. On being invited to go on and represent Cairns region at the North Queensland Championships, the girls hopped aboard their bus for two days of travel and one of football. To their delight and also surprise, they won both games and were now entering unchartered waters – competing as one of the final four girl’s primary school teams in the state of Queensland at the State Championships on the Sunshine Coast.

Suddenly, they were in rarefied air.

The AFLQ paid for the airfares, meals, accommodation and buses, but there was more needed to get the girls there – like matching outfits! After gaining sponsorships, endorsements and donations, the girls had raised enough to get to play in Maroochydore. Much of the money went on pairs of team shorts and caps that featured the Essendon club’s bomber logo. Now they looked like a footy team. The Essendon Bombers were wonderful in advising how to go about getting the logo onto the girl’s outfits and the Gordonvale Bombers were not just born – they were now dressed to kill.

The “girls from Gordy” arrived in Maroochydore wondering if they could even compete at such a level. A fair doubt to have given the carnival featured schools which were more experienced, wealthier, trained to a higher level with access to arguably better resources and in some cases were already AFL Schools Of Excellence (though not at primary level). It was daunting company and raised plenty of doubts in the travelling parties minds, but at the end of the day the girls discovered that despite the above perceived benefits, at the end of the day it was just 15 girls versus 15 girls – each with equivalent amounts of arms, legs and footy brains…and desire.

Across their two games on the weekend, the Gordonvale Bombers threw everything they had into battle, and charmed whoever they met off the field. In some ways, they became the “darlings” of the event in the eyes of many. But they were not there for sheer fun – they wanted to prove that they deserved to be at this level of school competition. The ensuing results certainly proved that.

First up a narrow nine-point loss to local Sunshine Coast school, St Thomas Moore College. The scores remained close – less than a goal in it – right up until the end when the Saints downed the heartbroken Bombers with a late goal. For the second game of the series against Brisbane school St Edwards, the same series of events unfolded – a late goal, just moments from the end of the game - turned a two-point deficit into an eight-point loss.

Yes, the game is about fun and participating, but that doesn’t mean you don’t feel heartbreak when you know you came so close to winning – twice. They might not have won a game for the tournament, but realistically the were only a couple of goals away from best in state. That isn’t much in footy.

The girls travelled down to Maroochydore knowing that the worst that could happen was to finish fourth in the state. That is exactly what happened in the brutal light of statistics. But the reality is that those two narrow defeats proved conclusively that the Gordonvale Bombers deserved to be in that company. However, more than that, the girls grew as young women in a bigger world. They made friendships that might last forever. They saw and learned things that they might never have otherwise experienced had it not been for footy.

They also learned how a community could come together around them and make dreams happen: School P & C, sponsors, parents, the school teaching community and many more people working together to create something memorable. Whilst it is true that the girls put their bodies on the line to compete in the actual games – bruises and all - they could never have had that opportunity without the assistance of many.

Gordonvale State School and the wider town and district came together and stood beside them.

Nobody can predict whether another team will one day better their performances this year. Inevitably, one day someone will. Nevertheless, until then, the Gordonvale Bombers stand as living proof that a talented and committed group of girls can make dreams happen on a football field. They really were the little engine that could. They might not have directly used the “I think I can” or “I thought I could” language, but they shard that little engines determination and belief. That little engine’s never say die attitude.

And in the process they won hearts, won respect and won admiration.

That is way, way better than winning a footy match.

2017 USAFL Nationals pre-match formalities completed

The Friday before the US Nationals for most of the 1500 competitors is a travel day. Arriving to San Diego by whatever means necessary they descend on the tournament hotels and register.

But a decent size group are already on the ground. A mixture of administrators, coaches and some early arrivals.

The Administrators conference ran throughout the Friday with various presentations by clubs discussing how they do things at their footy club and sharing ideas and experiences that can help others. The session was chaired by outgoing President Mike Shepherd.

Also on the agenda were a number of items.  Revolution and Liberty coaches reported back on their International Cup campaigns.  Rod Buncle and Tony Fairhead presented on their player exchange program and current exchange player Tyler Ames shared his experience at both Darwin and Montrose.  Other presentations filled in clubs on the state of play with USAFL Umpiring and the Women's Association. The session even saw one city that is bidding to be the future national championships host, presenting to the gathered club representatives.  Finally clubs that have seen some great player growth this year shared how that all came about.

Following all that the USAFL held their AGM to elect their office bearers going forward.  A new board was elected.  Headed up by new President Steve Grantland (Little Rock Coyotes).

While all this was going on, the grounds for today's matches were being prepared.  A women's clinic with the Aussie Sparks was a big success with around 70 players joining them for the session.

Also in the background, coaching and umpiring clinics were taking place continuing to grow the vital skills required to keep the game ticking at a high level.

The welcome dinners saw hundreds gather at the San Diego Marriot where Rod Grljusich hosted.  USAFL Life memberships were awarded and the new USAFL Revolution Hall of Fame saw it's first group of inductions.

As players and officials continued to trickle in from all across the country and in some cases around the world, team meetings were held ahead of what will be two massive days of footy.

Forecast for today will be around 80 degrees Fahrenheit, and Sunday around 90 which will be a little on the warm side.  But it is California after all.

Troy Thompson in San Diego.

Grand Finalists Back On Winner’s List – AFL Middle East

Round One of the 2017/18 AFL Middle East season got under way in Dubai on Thursday and Friday amid the warmth of the Middle Eastern climate. Last year’s grand finalists, the Dubai Dragons and Multiplex Bulls, both enjoyed first up wins and have already grabbed a flying advantage over all other teams.

Thursday evening saw the season opener when the Multiplex Bulls took on the Dubai Dingoes. On a warm but pleasant evening under lights at Dubai Sports City, the Dingoes threw everything at the Bulls early. According to the AFL Middle East report:

“[The game was played in] very still and pleasant conditions - 29 degrees for the 8:30pm kick off but humidity was low. The Dingoes won the toss [and] had plenty of new faces. Captain Ben Dawson did his calf during the week and could only manage 5 minutes of game time – a big loss for the Dingoes.”

“[The] first five minutes was scrappy as expected and Dingoes had plenty of forward entry but couldn't convert. The Bulls settled first and after Quarter Time never looked challenged – the Bulls were too skillful by foot and looked fitter. Small forward Jimmy Johri kicked four goals in his first game for the club and veteran full forward Jon Hickey kicked five.”

The final score saw the Multiplex Bulls 18 13 121 defeat Dubai Dingoes 3 4 22

Friday afternoon at The Sevens Stadium, the Dragons and Falcons found themselves in a tougher timeslot. According to AFL Middle East:

“It was a hot day with the temperature at 38 degrees for the 4pm kick off. With a bit of swirly cross ground breeze, the Dragons won the toss. The game was a very tight tussle and this was the case for the first two quarters but Dragons went into the half 16 points up.”

“The Falcons broke the game apart in the third quarter, led by Ty Farrell and Zac Moon, leading by 5 points at 3/4 time. The final quarter was a complete flip to the third and Dragons started to play the football they are known for; defence first, keep possession and wear the opponents down.”

“[The Dubai] Dragons had seven new players, which might explain why it took them three quarters to get use to 9's footy and the fast paced style. The Falcons say they have 4-5 players to come back into the side and look forward to the rematch in January.”

The final score in a tight tussle saw the Dubai Dragons 11 10 76 defeat the Abu Dhabi Falcons 7 5 47.

Round Two is on the 3rd November with the Abu Dhabi Falcons hosting the Dubai Dingoes, whilst the grand final rematch will see the Dubai Dragons take on the Multiplex Bulls in Dubai. Based on the results so far, another great round of footy awaits. ...

Toulouse Hawks – The Boys Are Back In Town

Round One of the French CNFA season is done. The round was a huge win for both the Bordeaux Bombers last weekend and the Toulouse Hawks yesterday. Both came away with important and resounding wins – but the Toulouse victory against the reigning premiers ALFA Lions signals the return of the Hawks.

Toulouse hosted the ALFA Lions and made no secret of their desire to capitalise on home ground advantage to outplay the Lions. By quarter time the Hawks had jumped to a 19-point lead and had extended that to a five goal break by half time.

Any chance of a second half revival by the Lions was snuffed out by another big third quarter by the Hawks, going into the final quarter with a 49-point lead. The final quarter saw the Lions fight for redemtion – the Hawks for total dominance, which is how the result panned out as they ran out convincing 66-point winners. Final score saw Toulouse Hawks 116 d ALFA Lions 50.

Due to transport problems, the second match of the weekend between the Aviators and Cergy-Pontoise Coyotes did not go ahead and will be rescheduled for later in the season.

The Hawks proved they are back in town. Their decision last year to assist the fledgling Blagnac Aviators take flight saw them lose some players and fall away a little across the season. But that decision came with a message of short-term pain, longer-term gain – and the Toulouse Hawks, borrowing from Thin Lizzy, the boys certainly are back in town. For the Lions, a reality check. After winning last season’s flag and starting well again pre-season, the Lions know they are mortal and the hunted.

The round commenced last weekend in Bordeaux as the Bombers, basking in the afterglow of a successful Euro Cup, celebrated by thumping the visiting Perpignon Tigers. The final result saw the Bordeaux Bombers 241 defeat the Perpignon Tigers 7. It is a useful start for the Bombers with a win and a huge percentage advantage for the rest of the season. Not so good for the Tigers as they now have to recover and reset for their next clash against the Aviators at home.

2017 USAFL Nationals Day 1 results

Day 1 of the 2017 Nationals was played in warm breezy conditions at Sun Sports Park in San Diego.  The six fields were in great condition for football and the setting was picturesque.

In the Men's Division 1 Pool A the Los Angeles Dragons were the only team undefeated and if they beat the winless Baltimore Washington tomorrow morning they will head into the final to take the title. They defeated New York Magpies by just one point and then clearly defeated the highly fancied Austin Crows. Their most likely opponent is Golden Gate.

Golden Gate showed the best skill, pace and strength in Pool B to also remain undefeated with solid wins over Calgary and Dallas.  Denver stand in their way tomorrow morning but even a loss in this match could see them go through on percentage if the margin is low.

Division 2 Pool A will be a battle between Orange County and Minnesota for a final spot while Houston look most likely to take out Pool B.

Bombers Bounce Back – NTFL

$

After a season to forget in 2017/17, and a tough, winless start to the new season, the Tiwi Bombers have bounced back hard in Round Three of the NTFL season in Darwin. After going into the match as rank outsiders against the previously undefeated Darwin Buffaloes, the Bombers turned their season in the right direction to win by 12 points.

Things didn’t start well after the Buffaloes kicked seven goals to three in the first quarter. But an eight goal to one second term from the Bombers gave them back the lead by half time and they were not about to give it up. The win lifts the Bombers to sixth place and back in the early mix to consolidate a battle later for finals.

In other results from Round Three, the Nightcliff Tigers made it three from three downing Wanderers by a comfortable 33 points. In a low scoring affair, the Tiger defence kept Wanderers to just two goals until three-quarter time, which was enough to keep them at bay.

Waratah also enjoyed their first win of the season with a 27-point win against the Palmerston Magpies. The win comes at the right time for Waratah, getting them into the top five narrowly ahead of the Tiwi Bombers. The Magpies have some serious work to do now after three successive losses to start the season, though they are shielded from bottom spot by the surprisingly winless St Mary’s.

The Saints went down again for their third successive loss to start the season, this time falling to the Southern District Crocs by a disturbing 43 points. Already the Saints are under pressure to defend their title, most likely having to win at least ten of their remaining fifteen games just to reach the finals. But they aren’t a champion team for nothing, and St Mary’s are capable of turning their season around. Crocs, however, leap frogged Tigers with the win to take top spot.

The next round is highlighted by the “top of the table” clash between the Nightcliff Tigers and Southern Districts Crocs. St Mary’s will be hoping to overcome Waratah, Wanderers take on the Tiwi Bombers and on Friday night the Darwin Buffaloes clash with the Palmerston Magpies.

Round 3 Scores:
Nightcliff 11 8 74 d Wanderers 5 11 41
Tiwi Bombers 18 10 118 d Darwin 15 16 106
Waratah 11 9 75 d Palmerston 6 12 48
Southern Districts 14 12 96 d St Mary’s 8 5 53

Cairns To Get Round One Match In 2018

In a complete departure from previous seasons, the Far North Queensland city of Cairns will host their 2018 match in Round One when the Gold Coast Suns become the host team and will play the North Melbourne Kangaroos. This is a huge shift from the previous seven AFL Premiership seasons, which has traditionally seen Cairns host matches involving the Suns, Richmond and Western Bulldogs in July.

It is a huge win for the northern city, which was uncertain as to its ability to host future matches when the Western Bulldogs announced they would pursue their Ballarat home game options from 2018 onwards. With an opening round start, it would be hoped that the Cairns fixture could capitalise on the traditional excitement of opening rounds as well as connecting directly with the early stages of local junior and senior competition.

Cairns has long been a producer of AFL talent. Currently, Cairns products in Charlie Dixon (Port Adelaide), Jarrod Harbrow (Gold Coast) and Jack Bowes (Gold Coast) are on team lists. Former Essendon star, Courtenay Dempsey is a Cairns boy, as was his team-mate in 2016 (and former Lion) Sam Michael.

The catalyst for change was the unavailability of the Suns’ home ground, Metricon Stadium, due to the upcoming Commonwealth Games – it is one of the venues and cannot be used early in the AFL season.

Ben Collins reported on the www.afl.com.au website that the AFL’s Travis Auld and Gold Coast Suns Chief Executive Mark Evans were delighted with the opening round match.

“Australian Football is thriving in North Queensland, and we're pleased the passionate fans in the region will help us kick off the 2018 Toyota AFL Premiership Season," Travis Auld, the AFL's general manager of clubs and broadcasting, said in a statement.

"North Queensland has produced current AFL players in Charlie Dixon, Jarrod Harbrow, Zac Smith and Jack Bowes, and the AFL hopes that bringing matches to the region will continue to inspire both female and male players to reach the big time."

Gold Coast chief executive Mark Evans was "thrilled" that the Suns would kick off their campaign in the heart of their talent academy.

"A round one game in Cairns presents a wonderful opportunity to showcase the region ahead of what is always a much-anticipated opening round," Evans said.

"As a club we have established significant support in Cairns and throughout North Queensland. We are committed to playing our role in developing our game throughout the region."

AFL Cairns will be delighted also with the news after so many years of hard work to develop Cazalys Stadium, promote the game to the Cairns and regional community and develop their senior and junior clubs on the back of increased interest in the game.

The match will be played at Cazaly’s Stadium on Saturday 24th March under lights.

The match will also herald the arrival of a new era of AFL Premiership and pre-season matches with Townsville to receive more games from 2019 onwards.

Malaysian Warriors Claim AFL Asian Championship

The Philippines capital city of Manila played host to the 2017 AFL Asian Championship last weekend. Clubs representing nations from across the length and breadth of the Asian continent took part again in the AFL Asia showcase event, with the Warriors claiming the Division 1 title and the Bali Geckos making it back-to-back Division 2 titles.

After taking the 2016 title, and being the host nation for this year’s event, the Philippine Eagles entered the vent as mild favourites. However, the Malaysia Warriors would have none of it, winning their way through the round matches before downing the Eagles in the final and celebrating 25 years as a club in grand style.

For the Bali Geckos, their victory in Division 2 was as sweet as it gets, going back to back after winning last year in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, when they downed the Myanmar Fighting Cocks. This year they held their nerve again to add another trophy to their football cabinet.

This year the Division 1 teams were the Warriors and Eagles along with the Hong Kong Dragons, Jakarta Bintangs and Singapore Wombats. The Division two teams featured the Geckos as well as the Macau Lightning, Vietnam Swans, Myanmar Fighting Cocks, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, China as well as “B” teams from the Singapore Wombats, Malaysia Warriors and Hong Kong Dragons.

Details of matches are not yet available to publish. A full list of scores will follow once released by AFL Asia.

Axed American Saint Pleads For Another Shot

Dinny Navaratnam from the www.afl.com.au website has reported that delisted St Kilda ruckman and American recruit Jason Holmes is seeking another chance at the highest level. Holmes has been regarded as a success story in the transition of international footballers to the highest level of AFL football. Whilst clubs cannot continually take chances on unproven talent, Holmes makes an interesting case for himself.

DELISTED ruckman Jason Holmes is determined to extend his four-year career as the first born and raised American to play at AFL level.

Holmes, who turns 28 on Saturday, has lined up in five matches since being picked up at No.36 by St Kilda in the 2013 rookie draft.

None of those games came this year as Billy Longer established himself as the Saints' primary big man, with Tom Hickey and Lewis Pierce also competing for a spot in the senior side.

However, Holmes' ambition has not been dulled.

"I would love nothing more than to have another opportunity to try to compete at the highest level," Holmes told AFL.com.au.

A tenacious combatant, he has a mature body that could be relied upon as a back-up.

"I can offer any team just that security that if I am picked, or a ruck goes down and you need someone to come in and still battle with the big boys at the AFL level, that I'll be in there providing the ball to the midfielders and forwards and whoever else needs it," Holmes said.

The big American has a solid appreciation of his role.

"I just feel like your midfielders are your ball users, they're the guys out there making big decisions for the team out on the field, and they need the ball in their hands. I take a lot of pride in knowing my teammates appreciate my service and I get them the ball where they want it, when they want it, because when they call for it, I know that they're trusting me to get it there for them," Holmes said.

He found out about being axed last Friday, a day after the NAB AFL Trade Period ended. Holmes had been in the US for about a month, and was enjoying time with his Australian girlfriend of two-and-a-half years.

After a trip to a museum and some shopping on Michigan Avenue – a prominent Chicago shopping strip – the pair were preparing for dinner in the John Hancock Centre at The Signature Room, located on the 95th floor.

St Kilda coach Alan Richardson's name flashed up on Holmes' phone and he knew what to expect.

"You kind of can assume what that call's about when you get it," Holmes said.

Despite disagreeing with the decision, he has no qualms with St Kilda, expressing only gratitude at the way he was treated.

He sees a bright future for the Saints as they bid to win their second premiership.

"You need 45 guys to be on the same page and I'm telling you, I can see it at the Saints," Holmes said.

"The club's getting there.

"You can tell that they're moving as one and I think that's one of the most important things that you need to win a flag."

No clubs have come calling yet, but the official announcement of his delisting was made on Monday, so it is still early.

Even if he is not playing AFL next season, Holmes wants to keeping playing football. A career in financial planning looms after he became accredited in 2016, while he is also in the process of becoming a permanent resident of Australia.

His body remains sound, the desire is there, and his appetite to develop is insatiable.

"My 3km time trials and everything, I started shaving those times when I arrived and I'm fitter to the point where I'm not tired anymore. I can leg out a full quarter without getting subbed off and I think that extra tank gives me more energy to win the ruck and then go play some football, go get the footy and be aggressive, get forward," Holmes said.

"Because I wasn't much of an offensive asset at the start, I also took pride in making sure I was trying to help the defence as well.

"I think I have so much more to improve, I think I can be more aggressive in the air. I think that's something I'll always want to work on.

"I still think I have quite a bit to improve. I've only been playing for four years and I don't have a 10-year-old footy body yet. I still think I've got a lot to give."

Tiwi Touch In Dreamtime Guernsey

Simon Conway reports on the Essendon website of a brilliant initiative from the club, which will see students from the Tiwi Islands designing the clubs next Dreamtime Guernsey. The Tiwi Islands, made up of both Bathurst and Melville Islands to the north of Darwin, are already connected to the Essendon Bombers, with local NTFL club, the Tiwi Bombers, sharing colours and logo with the AFL giant.

The venture involving the Guernsey design will strengthen the existing link between the Tiwi Islands and the Essendon Football club. According to the article:

Students from the Tiwi Islands will design Essendon’s 2018 Dreamtime guernsey.

Club Champion Gavin Wanganeen and award winning artist Chern’ee Sutton have designed the jumper in previous years.

Students from Tiwi College and Xavier College on the Tiwi Islands will have an opportunity to submit their design for the 2018 Dreamtime Guernsey.

The winner will be a special guest of the Club during Dreamtime Week, culminating in seeing the players run out in their jumper design at the game.

The Bombers have maintained a strong connection with the Tiwi Islands dating back to the day Michael Long was drafted from the Top End in 1988.

Current players spend time on the Tiwi Islands annually, Tiwi coaches travel to Tullamarine each year for tutelage from their Essendon counterparts and the Club plays an active role in supporting the Tiwi Bombers in the Northern Territory Football League.

The Tiwi Islands is also part of the Bombers Next Generation Academy zone and will form a key recruiting area when the Club enters the AFLW competition.

Ireland name 2017 IRS Test squad

It’s less than a month from the opening test of the International Rules Series, and the GAA has officially announced who will be representing Ireland at the 2017 test matches, which will be held on November 12th (Adelaide Oval) and 18th (Subiaco Oval).

County Mayo GAA leads the way with four selections -- Aidan O’Shea, Chris Barrett, Brendan Harrison, and Pearce Hanley, a former Mayo footballer who now plays for the AFL’s Gold Coast Suns. Mayo’s Gaelic football team were runners-up in the 2017 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, as they lost the final to County Dublin. County Kerry, another perennial GAA contender, will be sending three players to Australia to compete in the IRS -- Paul Murphy, Paul Geaney, and Peter Crowley.

The playing list is spread across the nation, with a significant minority from the Northern Ireland counties as well. The latter is represented by three players from County Tyrone, one from County Armagh, and two from County Down.

In addition to Hanley, Geelong veteran Zach Tuohy is another Irish prospect-turned AFL footballer and will be competing in his third career IRS. A polished defender/half-forward who began his career at Carlton, Tuohy has become one of the most intriguing Gaelic-to-AFL success stories in the past decade.

Caolan Mooney will also be representing Ireland; he played six senior games for Collingwood from 2012-2014 before returning home and playing for County Down.

"We are looking forward to pitting ourselves against the best the AFL has to offer in the coming weeks,” stated GAA chairman Aogán O Fearghail. “I hope the large Irish community in Australia comes out and get behind the Irish team over the course of the two games and I am confident we will see two competitive tests exemplifying the best traits of our two games."

Townsville Shines - Again

$

With the release today of the AFL’s JLT Community Series – the pre-season competition – Townsville in North Queensland has landed some big fish to further build the game in the city. By degrees, Townsville is becoming a viable AFL venue, both for matches and increasingly as a destination for local playing talent.

World Footy News reported back in early 2013 that the northern cities of Cairns and Townsville would be locked in a battle to be a destination for an AFL club team or franchise by 2030. See Cairns v Townsville – Which will be the home of an AFL team by 2030?. That argument was on the back of Cairns having hosted AFL premiership matches in 2011 and 2012 (and a number of pre-season matches featuring Geelong, Brisbane, Port Adelaide, Melbourne, St Kilda and North Melbourne in preceding years). At the time, Townsville had just been awarded its first pre-season match between the Gold Coast Suns and North Melbourne.

It was early days, but Cairns certainly had the jump on Townsville. A host of Cairns locals were making their mark in the AFL including Jarrod Harbrow (Gold Coast), Courtenay Dempsey (Essendon), Charlie Dixon (then Gold Coast), Peter Yagmoor (Collingwood), Rex Liddy (Gold Coast) and Lewis Moss (Gold Coast). By comparison, only Josh Hall (Gold Coast) was flying the Townsville flag.

But things have changed, and Townsville is making its mark. After a two-year hiatus where Mackay hosted the pre-season matches, the city has returned to AFL ranks with the JLT Community series match on March 2nd. Three weeks later Cairns will host the Round One premiership match between the Gold Coast Suns and North Melbourne Kangaroos. Interest in the game of Australian Rules football across the north will be piqued by two elite level matches within the same month. Both cities will feed of each other.

But Townsville has more aces up its sleeve now…Josh Williams and Braydon Preuss. Both players were recruited by North Melbourne and have played senior grade. Both started their careers with the local Hermit Park Tigers club in Townsville. They are local products around which an entire marketing program could be built.

Williams is 19 years old and played two matches for North Melbourne in his debut season after being taken in the 2016 National Draft at selection #36. Man-mountain, Braydon Preuss, the Roos’ 206cm giant ruckman also came from Hermit Park Tigers in Townsville. Rookie listed in 2015, Preuss played eight matches for North Melbourne this year.

As Townsville manages to unearth more talent, Cairns has seen a drop. Liddy, Moss and Dempsey are no longer on AFL lists – nor is Sam Michael who played for both the Brisbane Lions and Essendon. Jack Bowes is now a Suns player, but the overall Cairns talent pool has dropped a little as Townsville’s local talent rises. This is significant as young kids can idolise a local and possibly choose their own Australian Rules football pathway – it happened in Cairns and is happening in Townsville.

This all bodes well for the return of elite football to the city. A new era beckons with new opportunity, new drive, new talent and potentially new markets. Less than 5000 fans turned up at Riverway Stadium for the last match there in 2015. It is almost certain that the city will improve dramatically on that number next year with locals caught up in the hype of a new season and local talent to support.

It shapes as a tremendous start to the 2018 AFL season as Cairns and Townsville get to show their wares in unison. Though, realistically, this is just another example of the historic rivalry between the two cities, and that ads even more spice to a fascinating 2018 AFL Premiership and JLT Community seaso ...

Demons' Territory Grows

The Melbourne Demons will certainly be a familiar face in the Northern Territory throughout the 2018 season as both their AFL and AFLW teams increase their combined presence. In the following press release from the AFLNT, the increased Demon visitations are highlighted along with reference to an article from Matt Burgon at the www.afl.com.au website which looks at the Demons working closely with a Northern Territory club at grass roots level.

AFL Northern Territory (AFLNT) is thrilled with today’s announcements that it will host five AFL games in 2018.

The AFL Women’s (AFLW) will be the first to kick off with a pre-season match on Saturday 13th January 2018 at TIO Stadium as part of the Adelaide Crows Women’s team pre-season camp.

Alice Springs will make history as it hosts its first ever AFLW game on Saturday 24th February at Traeger Park when the Melbourne Demons take on Collingwood at 5.40pm.

The inaugural AFLW 2017 premiership team will then take on the Fremantle Dockers at TIO Stadium in Round 6 on Friday 9th March at 5.35pm.

Round 10 of the 2018 Toyota AFL Premiership Season will see the Melbourne Football Club host the Adelaide Crows at TIO Traeger Park in Alice Springs on Sunday May 27 at 2.50pm.

The Melbourne Football Club will then host Fremantle at TIO Stadium in Darwin in Round 16 on Saturday July 7 at 7.10pm.

AFLNT CEO Michael Solomon said, “We are thrilled to have five AFL games in the Northern Territory next year and to host an AFLW game for the first time ever in Alice Springs is very exciting for our football fans.”

“With seven NT players signed, and the team building on what has already been achieved on and off the field, people will be lining up to watch the exciting brand of football that the Adelaide Crows Women’s team play.”

Solomon said “The announcement of the AFL games in the Northern Territory shows we are committed to building strong links between local communities, grassroots football and the elite level,”

“We have worked closely with the NT Government and the clubs to reach this agreement so we are delighted to be continuing relationships once again.”

“Our gratitude goes to everyone involved including the Adelaide Football Club, Melbourne Football Club, the NT Government, the AFL and the people of AFLNT who have worked tirelessly to deliver this outcome” he said.

The work of the Melbourne Football Club in the Northern Territory is also highlighted by the connection with Central Australia Redtails based in Alice Springs. According to Matt Burgon on the www.afl.com.au website:

MELBOURNE has partnered with the Redtails, an Alice Springs-based football team, which aims to drive change in the Central Australia community.

The Redtails (men’s team) and Pinktails (women’s) are made up of players from Central Australia, from about “300 communities” in the area.

General manager of football operations Josh Mahoney said Melbourne had been looking to formalise its relationship with a club in the Northern Territory, and the Redtails were the right fit for both parties.

“After playing the first AFL home and away game in Alice Springs in 2014 and being allocated the Alice Springs region as part of our Next Generation Academy, we have been looking at potential partnerships in the region,” he told melbournefc.com.au.

“Once we spoke to Redtails president Rob Clarke about his program, how it started and the success stories, we felt that a partnership between the Redtails and Melbourne Football Club made sense and would have a positive impact on the community.

To read the full Matt Burgon story on the Melbourne Demons and the Redtails, go to the following link: http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2017-10-27/melbourne-partners-with-redtails

The connection between the Melbourne Demons and the AFLNT has been a long time in the making. The following stories from 2013 give an insight into the goals of the venture. Aviators & Cockerels Triumph In France

Results in the French (CNFA) Australian Rules football competition this weekend have seen the Toulouse based Aviators (formerly Blagnac Aviators) and Paris Cockerels record victories. They are important results for each team, setting the clubs up with a jump on other teams early in the season. The Aviators defeated the Tigers whilst the Cockerels downed the Coyotes.

The Perpignan Tigers hosted the Aviators and both teams fought hard throughout the match. The Aviators, in just their second season, played the brand of football that won them two matches in their maiden season. The Tigers were unlucky in some games last year and one could argue the same on the weekend. They fought the Aviators to the final siren but unluckily went down by three goals.

It makes for a tough start to the season for the Tigers, having lost both of their games this season. They will have to correct things quickly to remain in finals contention from here.

Final scores saw the Aviators down the Tigers 92 to 74.

The Paris Cockerels hosted the Cergy-Pontoise Coyotes in what could be termed a local Parisian derby. In another tight tussle, both teams fought hard for four quarters before the Cockerels held out longer to win – also by three goals and with the same score-line as the other game. The win gets the Cockerels away to a strong start, whilst the rocky start for the Coyotes continued after last weekend’s game against the Aviators was postponed.

Final scores saw the Cockerels 92 defeat the Coyotes 74.

Round Three will be played next weekend with re-energised Toulouse Hawks taking on the equally resurgent Bordeaux Bombers. The ALFA Lions will host the Paris Cockatoos in Lyon. They are sure to be two interesting matches in their own right, but results will start to shuffle the deck a little to see which teams begin to break away from the others and which teams fall behind the pack a littl ...
